Sure. But those 2 guys are likely the exception, not the rule. At the end of Savard and during the Houle era the Habs picked lots of guys who had everything else but lacked skating and they mostly all busted and nobody was a really good player. See Mark Pederson, Terry Ryan, Eric Chouinard, Jason Ward.

Fine with taking a flyer with a late 1st or in later rounds , like Jason Robertson at 39thOA, but unless it's a goalie I'm not using a top 10 pick on a bad skater. Game is played on the ice.
Back when the Habs held their rookie camp in Verdun I remember that's where I got my first look at Pederson and I couldn't believe that was our first round pick. The guy could barely skate.

Lol. I know. Announcers kept saying he was deadly from the blueline in, the problem was everywhere else.

They really didn't value skating, always saying it will come. And the 18 ,19 year old was expected to figure it out on his own. Not so much.

Would anyone take him with a 7th ?

Goes to a new team and gets up to almost a ppg, granted in a small sample size, but he's a big, heavy boi.

I would Take a flyer on him yes

Would love to get my hands on Bear and/or Desnoyers. We could definitely use one or both of these players in our prospect pool along with another good defence prospect (Mrtka/Hensler/Fiddler)
I have Fiddler higher than Cootes and Spence. Due to position he plays and his size. If I got a center with our pick I would take Fiddler with Calgary's

I seen Cootes and Spence as third line players. They generally easy to acquire, rather than spend a mid first round pick on them.

Mid first round pick this year is going to get you a third line or a 4/5 D. It's just not that deep.

I'd love to get Cootes or Spence because they are middle 6ers with jam, pace, they can play the game anyway it needs to be played and you can never go wrong having those guys in the system.

They are but big mobile right D are valuable and shyer than hens teeth. Bottom 6 forwards are usually easy to find

If he'd be Newhook, I wouldn't like him. Bear has actual real hockey IQ sense. His brain is actually in sync with his skating.

I was a big fan of Newhook pre-draft.

Bear is one to pay attention too. Bob has him 15th but you and others say he is a top 10 pick. Will be interesting to see where he lands on the popular lists the closer we get to the draft.

I do like shooters that can score! 36 goals in 44 games. Decent size/weight at his age

I wonder why Bob has him 15th on his mid season list? Quite the riser from the 2021 WHL draft (6 round and 132 OA).

Newhook type?
Not the same type of player.

Hard to find a comparable but if I absolutely have to name one, I’d say Lehkonen but at 6’ and with much better offensive talent, shot, vision and skills, his backhand shot is so good. I say Lehkonen as an example because he has some tenacity and grit in him, he doesn’t lose many battles.

A guy I don't want top 10....it's Hensler. There's no way he's top 10 UNLESS.....RIGHT D-MAN OH MY GOD!!!!! Hensler top 10 is needs way more than BPA. His ceiling is so low but his floor is NHL. But we did that with Reinbacher. No way we do that with Hensler.

Reinbacher and Hensler aren't in the same league.

Hensler has no top 10 hype at all and he isn't going to get any.

Not in the same league? No top 10 hype at all?
  • McKenzie Midterm Rankings 2025: Hensley No 11
  • McKenzie Midterm Rankings 2023: Reinbacher No 20.
I keep hearing how it makes perfect sense that a RD gets pick earlier than he should...why wouldn't a guy who is ahead of where Reinbacher was at the same period not be a top 10 player?

I personnally, I don't. 'Cause i never value position ahead of BPA. But we are not NHL teams right? Nobody saw Reinbacher at 5. At best, McKenzie final list at him at 8.Would you have said the same thing in 2023? If I would have said that I didn't want Reinbacher at 5....that there was no way we'd do it as there wasn't top 10 hype at all? And yet....

Yes, not in the same league.

Hensler had D-1 hype, which there was already big questions coming into his draft year. In his draft year, he continues to lower his stock rather than raise it.

Reinbacher was an under the radar prospect coming into his draft year and had a meteoric rise throughout the year based on his record setting performance in the NLA. Great showing at WJC on a overmatched Austrian team and then more high end showings at the World's before the injury.

And yeah everyone who followed the draft knew that Reinbacher was going no later than 6th and has been confirmed a thousand times over was the target of Montreal, Arizona, Nashville and Philadelphia. We don't have confirmations of other teams but the draft buzz was that Montreal would receive offers for 5 and it'd be to get Reinbacher not Michkov.

Reinbacher's profile isn't a lot of risk. You are getting a NHL right shot defenseman at minimum.

They understood that you rarely get a shot to get a Reinbacher's package, so when you get it, you better take it.

Leonard's a great player but who many wingers do we need? Our RD position would be beyond dire without the Reinbacher selection and Leonard already would be finding it difficult for PP time with Suzuki, Demidov, Slafkovsky, Caufield and Laine in the mix.
So, you're not a big fan of drafting BPA.

We'll see where it will get us...

When Leonard's ready, Laine won't be with the team anymore...

I am a fan of drafting BPA; but BPA is rarely as black and white as fans want to make it out to be.

The fact is that Reinbacher was going 5. Whether we had the pick. Whether Arizona had it. Whether Philadelphia had it. Whether Nashville acquired it.

In that sense, they definitely took the BPA. I wanted Michkov at 5; he wasn't going to be picked and I was happy with either Reinbacher or Leonard. When things are close, the RD is always going to go ahead of the winger.

This isn't a reach and trying to pretend it is now because Kloten was a mess, we want to ignore his Laval games because it doesn't fit the narrative, and he got hurt in camp, is just par for the course on this board.
