2025 NHL Draft: Lose a ton for Porter Martone

Who else do we have? Halttunen and Lund are extremely unlikely to make the NHL and not even remotely on the same level as Martone.

Chernyshov, Svoboda, and Wetsch on top of those guys are all in the system. Yeah, they have varying degrees of odds to make it but Martone's impact on the wing isn't going to be as good as the impact you'd get if Hagens or Misa hit.

If Martone hits you get a Matthew Tkachuk/Corey Perry type power forward with soft hands and elite offensive skill. That's way more valuable than Hagens developing into Cooley 2.0 or Misa becoming a slightly better Couture.

I don't really care how engaged he looks in the OHL. He's probably bored playing in a league he's too good for.

I think Hagens and Misa's odds of being a top six forward are still much greater than Martone's. However, even if Martone's is better, being a top six winger is not all that valuable nor needed unless they are actually elite. Wingers are readily available at multiple levels including the draft to fill lineup spots. Martone should be a choice made by the team if they have no other options. At 3, any of the other three is a better pick for the team than Martone.

yes they absolutely are higher. Misa has the intelligence to be a 1C. Dude is consistently the smartest player on the ice and has the talent and work ethic to end up as a top line player. Very easily. Hagens on the other hand has some of the best offensive talent in the draft. Also is very smart. He’s got a Jack Hughes type ceiling. If either of these guys actually had the ceiling you're implying, Schaefer would not have been the unanimous top ranked prospect in McKenzie's rankings.

I probably wouldn’t say that as I think Musty has never really fully shown engagement away from the puck whereas Martone has. Martone is a power forward type that yes can be like that Tkachuk type (although I don’t really agree with that comparison and it’s lazy as shit). I think Martone is more like Kempe than Tkachuk. I just don’t think he has that sort of mean streak reputation Tkachuk has.

I doubt 5'10 Hagens is going to be a center in the NHL but if he is that's an understandable reason to prefer him and Misa to a surefire wing like Martone...unless you're the Sharks who already have their 1st and 2nd line centers of the future accounted for.

I agree with this, which is why I lean Misa over Hagens.

The appeal of Martone to me is that he does do the one thing that nobody on our team or in our prospect pool does at a high level and that's get the dirty work goals around the net. But if we're throwing Tkachuk comparisons around, I'd say he's more Brady than Matthew at this point.

I always thought Martone was more of a Meier than anyone else. Not really someone you want to be using a top 3 pick on despite him fitting one of the Sharks' needs.

The "Martone is basically Musty" people are out to lunch too but this defense of Martone when you are Musty hater #1 is hilarious. Musty was a July birthday and Martone is an October birthday. Martone's season this year he's the same age as Musty was last year, when he put up 2+ PPG in the OHL. They're the same size, have the same skating concerns and pace issues, and have an equal commitment in the defensive zone. Both have gotten the "bored with the OHL" defense. Both can be nasty customers.

So what separates Martone, whom you are vigorously defending, from Musty, whom you deplore? I'm dying to know.

I like that Misa seems to have a fairly high floor. Smith is our sort of riskier, boom/bust, high-ceiling-if-everything-goes-right guy. I don't know if I want two of those. If Misa can be a really steady, super fast, Celebrini-lite 2nd line center for us, that would be a huge win.

If not Schaefer, having Misa, Celebrini, Smith and Eklund in our Top 6 is great. Hopefully guys like Musty, Chernyshov, etc. can fill out the other two slots (or other guys we pick-up).
