Don't tell Pavel!
Or Steve!

I'm really rooting for Hagens to pop off. I want another American star and I enjoy watching him play (usually lol), plus I want two of Schaefer/Misa/Martone to be available if we slip to 3 or god forbid 4. But I've just been consistently whelmed by his play so far this season. Hopefully he goes off at the WJC and starts to really light it up in the second half.

What a shitty draft class this is shaping up to be. 2022 vibes.
I was thinking earlier that it kind of reminded me of 2022 in the sense that I think any of Slafkovsky/Wright/Cooley/Jiricek/Nemec had a legit argument for #1. Personally feel like Schaefer is going to set himself apart at some point. Thankfully I think most of the tanking teams need forward help more than a LHD.

Martone quietly had 4 primary assists. Didn't watch him though so have no idea how he played overall.

All I can say is thank whatever higher power you believe in for the 2024 lottery win.

Speaking of Hagens and BC, can’t help but notice Perreault and Leonard’s points per game rates are down without Smith.

I haven't watched every BC game this year like I did last year, but they're especially missing both Smith and Gauthier on the PP. I would also guess that without Gauthier on a separate line at even strength, Perreault/Hagens/Leonard are seeing the opponents' best constantly. The freshman line was quite sheltered last year, but also didn't play a ton of minutes (which makes their production even more impressive). Overall the team just isn't as good. Tons of freshman and no real secondary scoring. The insane chemistry between Perreault/Smith/Leonard also can't be discounted, it was mind-boggling how they always knew what the others were doing before it happened.

After watching Hagens again today I've purchased my tickets and have boarded the Schaefer train. Not that Hagens was disappointing or anything, just that Schaefer is that good.

So, who's our competition for the dynamic LHD? This is assuming one or two of these teams finish ahead of us after the lotto balls do their thing.

Montreal - Hughes has already demonstrated that he'll draft for need with the Reinbacher pick. They've been starved for a true #1 center and if management views the D the same way their fans do Schaefer is a luxury. Suzuki is great but more of a 1b for a true contender. Can't see them passing up Misa or Hagens to pair with Slaf and Demidov.

Chicago - Thank goodness they picked Lev over Demidov. With Bedard's "disappointing" start this season, fans have been turning up the heat on mangement to get him some help. And who better to slap on his wing than Martone? Or, since they've been tinkering with Bedard on the wing, how about Misa? Hagens is an interesting one since he's only a little bigger than Bedard but I could see the allutre of solidifying their center spine.

Philadelphia - Similar to Chicago, they need a center that can keep up with Michkov. Luchanko, imo, will be a solid middle six C but that's about it. Would've been better for us if they took Buium, especially since Drysdale hasn't been looking great. I'd say they're a minor threat at taking Schaefer. Hopefully they do their Philly thing and end up drafting 7th or 8th.

Nashville - This one is tricky. Despite his recent comments, Trotz doesn't seem to have the stomach for a full-blown rebuild. Since dmen traditionally take longer to develop, perhaps they'd kick of their retool with a big-body forward that can step in right away like Misa or Martone. They've been known to pull elite dmen out of their hat. Hopefully that incentivises them to take a forward first and draft their next Josi with one of their late 1sts or 2nds.

Pittsburgh - This one isn't tricky. If they draft ahead of us they go Hagens or Misa to anchor McKenna. (Oh please, we all know it's coming). Plus, they have the perfect mentor in Sid.

Anaheim - Oh Ducks, we finish behind you once and you're already sick of it? (Of course they tie it in the 3rd as I type this :p Annnnd they're up 5-3 now.) The fowl are the biggest wildcard in the Schaefer sweepstakes. Their management doesn't draft with care or consideration of need or consensus. They pinpoint their guy and they take him. The good (or bad) news is that they have some really solid young d, especially Minty, Zell, and Smith. Their biggest need, imo is a true 2C to play behind Leo. Yes, Zegras is becoming more defensibly responsible but I can't see him not falling apart when the going gets tough in the playoffs. McTavish is shaping up to be a solid top 6 winger but not the tough to play against center they drafted him 3rd OA to be.

Columbus - I'm not quite sure what is going on with Jiricek and I'm not certain Columbus knows either. They finally have their center in Fantili, though it wouldn't surprise me if Hagens or Misa end up better on account of their IQs. Honestly, if they consider the top of the 2025 equally, whether they pick Schaefer or not most likely comes down to how they veiw Jiricek.

So yeah, like Jux mentioned most of the teams ahead of us are forward heavy. That said, I'd still be thrilled with Hagens, Misa, or Martone. Oh yeah and obligitory, lots of hockey to be played, things can change, etc.

Didn't the BJ's also land Cayden Lindstrom?

I guess, but we might just end up being okay if we fall somewhere in that top four.

WRT franchise defining 1 OA level players, not really to be found here and whoever gets taken at the top of this draft will probably end up paling in comparison years down the line to Celebrini/McKenna/Dupont.

I think if we have the chance to select any of Schaefer/Hagens/Martone/Misa we'd be adding another high level / blue chip prospect to add to our pool - and all four of them have such unique dimensions to their game. They should aid in the push forward to get us back to competing once again.

Agreed, Despite our dire need for defender prospects, ending up with another top-5ish draft pick is nothing but good, no matter who we end up picking.

@Great Makohead Shork nice post.

Nashville has never drafted an elite center. Have to think they'd go Misa or Hagens. They are also loaded with goal scoring wings- Forsberg, Stamkos, and Marchessault. By D+2, Hagens could probably be a legit 2C with those guys, and may just help them re-open their window. I expect they'll pull themselves out of the bottom 5 however.

I'd see Philly doing the same thing to have a C to play with Michkov. They have some quality young D but no one at Schaefer's level. Briere cited strength of D prospects as reason for not taking Buium, however he has the same agent as Gauthier, so that may be an equal or more accurate reason. I think they're more desperate for a C, but it's close. Martone would be a great Flyer, but the one position they have nailed is RW- Michkov, Konecky, Tippett.

My guess is Pitt would opt for a forward due to faster time to NHL value, and to give Sid something to rejuvenate him.

Chicago, IMO, has to go forward. Even with Levshunov, Vlasic, Korchinski, Allen, and their other solid young D (+Jones), Schaefer would be their best D. However, can you really look to Nazar and Moore as your long-term support for Bedard? They will invest in free agency again (they'll go big game hunting), but I really think you need to get Bedard his running mate for the decade.

Habs are tricky, they have everything but a franchise center and a franchise d-man. If you can only get one, I think you opt for the center, but maybe they convince themselves Suzuki is good enough?

I agree Anaheim would go BPA. Carlsson, Sennecke, Gauthier, McTavish, Mintuykov, Zellwegger are two excellent players at wing, center, and LHD. They need RHD. If they end up outside the top 6 I wonder if they'd go off the board with Mrtak, Hensler or another one of those guys. That said, I think they and Montreal are the most likely threat for Schaefer.

CBJ could go with any of the four, Schaefer probably fills more of a need, though they do have Werenski. Hopefully they stay outside the bottom 5.

I haven’t quite decided if it’s recency bias or real but personally I think I like the top forwards in this draft more than the top forwards in 2022. Although I will say that I do think I liked Nemec and Jiricek their draft year more than every dman not named Schaefer and around the same level as Schaefer if not more.

For draft people:

Who are the other exciting 1st round D prospects after Schaefer and do any of them present legit 1st pair potential?

Thanks to anyone who takes the time

There is such a significant drop off from Schaefer compared to the other D prospects this draft. The other D prospects you are looking at would be Jackson Smith, Radim Mrytka, Logan Hensler, Blake Fiddler and a few others.

Lets put it this way, last years draft had “the 6 defensemen” that were all projected to be picked roughly in the top 10. I personally prefer those 6 over all of the defensemen this upcoming draft not named Schaefer and I prefer Schaefer over all of the “big 6 D” from last draft.

It is still early and I could be very wrong but I only see first pair potential with Schaefer at the moment. The rest feel more like top 4 potential.

Edit: Just to add that my opinion is mostly just from listening/reading what a lot of the hockey/prospect scouts have been saying

It’s between Schaefer and Martone for me. If we draft Schaefer, one of Cagnoni or Mukhammadullin are probably moved. If we draft Martone I could see us moving one of Chernyshov or Musty in a package for a young RD. Both options are promising but I am leaning toward drafting Schaefer

I think you nailed it.

There's a chance that one of these "other D" have a great back half of the year and rise up, but almost certainly not to top 5-10 level. Guys like Limatov, Amico have been spoken about as high ceiling but would likely hit a "ceiling" around 10OA with an amazing second half, alongside the other names you listed.

There could be a fair few at 33-35OA (wherever we are) that are exciting potential bottom or middle pair guys, like Badinka last year, but nothing that would rise to the level of Dickinson let alone Schaefer.
