Should I rename the thread to this, @Juxtaposer? That would be the final thread re-name by you and we'd keep that name through the 2025 draft lottery.D thin as a wafer, fix it with Schaefer!
Why do I keep hearing people wanting to sign Draisaitl? Hard pass on Draisaitl for me, he will be 30 years old and it will be a 7 year contract worth 13+ million and by the time we are seriously competitive will be anywhere from 4-7 years. By then Draisaitl will not be in his prime he will be 34-37 years old lol and you are going to have to give a huge pay raise to our current young stars and future ones coming off of their ELCs like Eklund/Celebrini/Smith/Musty/Dickinson etc. Draisaitl timeline makes no sense for our timeline...it only makes sense for teams that are seriously close and trying to win the Stanley Cup within the next 3-5 years. The new plan: trade for Askarov, draft Schaefer, and then sign Draisaitl. Our core could look like:
Celebrini, Draisaitl, Smith, Eklund, Askarov, Schaefer, Dickinson & Embers...Havelid

From our friend @GermanSpitfire on the prospect boards.
His stats are weird, all of his stats are basically just international tournaments. Does he play in a czech league?Thoughts on RD Radim Mrtka?
Worthy of being our pick in the 2nd round?
Too high?
Crazy to think he'd still be available at the top of the 2nd round?
I know little about him other than a basic profile. He's big. Seems to play to his size. Pocesses puck handling skills. Or so I read. His stats are weird, all of his stats are basically just international tournaments. Does he play in a czech league?
It's early, but he is on watch lists for mid 1st round to 2nd round. He's one of the D I was tracking for our no-longer VGK pick, but he may be around at 33-35ish. 9 months of hockey left.I know little about him other than a basic profile. He's big. Czech U17 last three years (with U20 and the ELH last year as well). His stats are weird, all of his stats are basically just international tournaments. Does he play in a czech league?
I wouldn't hate keeping Granlund if he can be 90% of the player he was last season either, but to play devil's advocate, even getting a late 2nd for Granlund could help us flip that late 2nd for a John Marino type of player. That is to say that starting this season, I think that trading non-1sts to help bolster the D with established vets is the way to go rather than spending 2nds on long-shot RHD that are five years from being impact players even if they hit. There's a lot RHD in 2025, got to think one will be available in the early 30s like Badinka and Elick were this year. Also, we have quite a few prospects, and I anticipate Granlund, Kunin, Sturm, Ruuta, are going to bring in a few picks. Benning, Ferraro, and Walman having two cheap years as a deadline pickup may also interest a few teams. Got to think Grier will be aggressive in using extra capital to move up.
Wouldn't be too disappointed if we kept Granlund. If we could only get a single second, I think I'd prefer to overpay him for two years. Another 50-60 point year and you may get offers of a 1st or 2 2nds, and I think you got to think about moving him at that point.
I'm also skeptical of Granlund's future, and holding onto him risks losing the opportunity to trade him for anything useful (like Reimer and Barabanov).I wouldn't hate keeping Granlund if he can be 90% of the player he was last season either, but to play devil's advocate, even getting a late 2nd for Granlund could help us flip that late 2nd for a John Marino type of player. I think whether or not to trade Granlund is gonna come down to how the season is going by the deadline and how Celebrini and Smith are doing at center. If you move Granlund, your top-9 centers are basically two teenagers and Alex Wennberg, so I don't think you can move Granlund if Celebrini and Smith aren't essentially capable of being the 1C and 2C, unless someone is (as previously mentioned) giving us something stupid like a 1st or two 2nds. But if Celebrini/Smith/Wennberg/Strum can hold down the center slots for the last 20 games AND the new vets like Toffoli/Wennberg/Walman are good enough in the room to hold it down as well, then you can move Granlund for whatever the best offer is.I'm also skeptical of Granlund's future, and holding onto him risks losing the opportunity to trade him for anything useful (like Reimer and Barabanov).
He's not going to be a key contributor to the next good Sharks team at his age. It may be worth keeping him another year to help develop the young guys, sure - but that also risks losing out on a mid-2nd and getting nothing (or a scratcher ticket) instead.
Right, Sturm does probably go at the deadline, if he can get a 3rd rounder then I'd move him, Goodrow is a fine 4C for the last quarter of the season.I think you’ve got Goodrow replacing Sturm as 4C after the deadline, but beyond that, it’s a good argument. The most important part of this year is Celebrini and Smiths development. Next is getting another star in ‘25 draft. Then adding draft capital. Anything after that is gravy.
I'm pretty ambivalent about a mid-2nd, which is a lottery scratcher draft-wise. I could take or leave that trade and hope to re-sign him. If we could get a late first or better, I do that every time, but that might be wishful thinking.I'm also skeptical of Granlund's future, and holding onto him risks losing the opportunity to trade him for anything useful (like Reimer and Barabanov).

I think that's wishful thinking, and a mid-2nd is a good enough return for a player of Granlund's caliber and asset value.I'm pretty ambivalent about a mid-2nd, which is a lottery scratcher draft-wise. I don't think it matters much whether Celebrini and Smith are "ready" (ready for what? to deserve to be on an NHL roster? to be 1st/2nd line centers that wouldn't look out of place on any low-end playoff team?). The goal of the team isn't to make the playoffs in 2025 and maybe not even 2026 so I'm not thinking in terms of either of them having to reach a certain level of productivity by a cutoff date that's during this season. So long as they look like they belong on the same ice as other NHL players, I'm fine with them centering the first and second lines immediately and living with the results. I want them developed, not coddled and I don't give a damn about keeping last year's first line intact.I think that's wishful thinking, and a mid-2nd is a good enough return for a player of Granlund's caliber and asset value.
We'll have to see if Celebrini and Smith are ready by mid-season, of course. Unfortunately, Granlund's also likely our only premium deadline asset.
The problem with them playing top line minutes is they will face top line competition. Eklund started the season off slow with Hertl and they moved him down the line up where he gained confidence. Then they moved him back up to the top line as he got used to the level of play. He also had years of pro experience. I expect Celebrini and Smith to start the 2nd and 3rd lines because of this and if they succeed move them up to higher linesI don't think it matters much whether Celebrin and Smith are "ready" (ready for what? to deserve to be on an NHL roster? to be 1st/2nd line centers that wouldn't look out of place on any low-end playoff team?). I completely agree. I’m not attached to the “Lund” line. They are literally the only top 9 FWs returning. Why put them all on the same line when they can also be used to support Celebrini and Smith.I want them developed, not coddled and I don't give a damn about keeping last year's first line intact.
I liked that poll. But would be better doing points this year, as i see the team not really winning more games per say but being more competitive which usually leads to more OT/shootout losses.Lots of back and forth across multiple threads about how people think we're going to do this year. Last year I enjoyed the poll/thread on win projections and revisiting it as the year went on. Do people want me/someone to post that again this season and we can target conversation about forecasts/betting there?
