2025 NHL DRAFT Discussion

Just posting so Waiver Draft doesn't feel so lonely.

I'm curious if Guerin is going to try to use Rossi to get a 1st round pick back. Wouldn't be my strategy because I think there are better ways to utilize Rossi's value, but who knows. Also haven't been following this class since we traded our 1st (like everybody else, obviously), but I hope we draft a skilled AND big forward in the second.

Gosh it would be Knies to have Matthew instead of Jack Peart right now.

That would be interesting. Since I haven’t payed attention to this years draft, since the Jiricek trade, what can Rossi a 60+ pt center get you? Top 8?

Well I don't know how good any of these prospects are projected to be this year, but just based on the team picking, I'd say:

Buffalo at 7 could use immediate NHL help over another prospect,

Anaheim at 8 I would say doesn't want Rossi,

Pittsburgh at 9 is a possibility, it depends on how much they want to go for it while Crosby is still playing versus how much they want to start preparing for a future without Crosby,

NY Islanders at 10 honestly not sure about, they could use Rossi but with a new GM who knows how much pressure they're actually under to win now versus taking their time with a prospect

NY Rangers at 11 are probably under immense pressure to win now and probably don't care about this pick

Detroit at 12 I would guess wants their pick more than they want Rossi, with Larkin, Kasper and Danielson already in the system

So there may be some options if that's the route he wants to go. Whether any of those teams are actually willing to give their pick for Rossi, I can only guess.

Utah picks 14th. Feels like one of the more likely outcomes imo. Carter Bear is intriguing to me, as is Jack Nesbitt

I would hope there’s a plus but yeah idk. I’m trying not to get my hopes up

Even if there's a plus, what are we looking at? Rossi is a 24 year old center that just scored 60 points, even with a bad last two months. A 14th pick+ might be what, a couple third liners in 5 years? Maybe a 2nd and 3rd liner if we're lucky?

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm just saying that would be another tally in the "Guerin is incompetent" column. Especially if his plan is to use the money he frees up to sign two older players who don't even score 60 (Boeser/Nelson). I just hope he's smarter than that.

But I acknowledge that that's what he did with Fiala, so I know it's a distinct possibility.

Right I agree I’d be underwhelmed I’m just saying that I have a fear that a player like Rossi might not be valued as highly in the league as he is by fans. Reminds me a bit of when Domi had 70 points or something as a 23yo playing center for Montreal but got traded for next to nothing.

For me, you don’t trade him then. That ship appears to have sailed though.

I'm not sure how to compare him to Domi. That 70 point season seems to have been an aberration compared to the other four seasons where he was a 50 point per 82 game player. We don't really know yet what Rossi's norm is. He improved pretty drastically last season, and again pretty drastically this season. If he gets top six opportunity next year and goes back to 45 points, then maybe this 60 point season was the aberration. If he scores 60 next year then maybe 60 is his norm and he's probably worth more than Domi. If he scores 70+ next year then maybe he's still a young improving player with a higher ceiling.

We just don't have enough data to draw any conclusions, which is a major part of why I wouldn't trade him, especially for an underwhelming return. Worst case scenario is we miss out on an underwhelming return now and in a few more years we're not as high on him and we still get what present day us would consider an underwhelming return.

As well, Domi was traded for Josh Anderson, who at the time was considered, especially by Montreal who acquired him, an up and coming young power forward who was going to help their team be good for a long time. He did score 27 goals as a 24 year old, was big, played heavy, and is a right handed shot. He wasn't nothing when they traded for him.

Plus if Guerin decides to trade him, it's Guerin's job to find the GM who does value him as highly as the fans. He's a 23 year old center who just put up 60 points. 5'9 or not, someone is going to take a swing on that. If Guerin decides to do like he did with Fiala and just talk to one team without making him available to everyone league wide, that's again, another tally in the "Guerin is incompetent" column.

Few interesting names in Button's list that could be around the Wild's range: Matthew Gard, Cole McKinney and Mason West.

I’d enjoy a Mason West pick. Feels like we never take the right Minnesotans. Think he could be an NHLer down the line
