US win 4-1

Canada just needs to stop with the dumb penalties. They give up 2 pp goals to Latvia, and 3 to the US tonight. Otherwise not counting the US's empty net goal with the goalie pulled, nobody has scored on them in 4 games even strength (plus OT vs Latvia).

Canada's strategy is like: to play a safe game, let's keep putting the puck in the most dangerous part of the ice for turnovers.

If you miss an east-west pass down low, they've still got to go the length of the ice.

Gauthier out on the pk with 1:30 left to try to preserve the tie. Gets a big block, but Czechia gets the goal. Tough end for Canada this tournament (if this is it)

Canada is an interesting case. The coach, Dave Cameron, has coaching experience coaching Canada's national junior team, and was the CHL's coach of the year in 22-23.

Yet there seems to be a lot of justified criticism directed towards him.

(ignore the whinging about refs in that last video)

Junior hockey seems extremely political. The US doesn't like picking guys who went the CHL route, and Canada doesn't like NCAA guys.

Then there's the layer of resistance to deviating on how teams are built, or how they should play. They want to win, but only on their terms. Only if it reinforces their existing beliefs.

The US senior team didn't learn from 2010. They keep building their teams the same way, and are a silver medal country. Needing miracles is core to their self-image.

I generally like the 3v3 for the regular season, but no way should that be used to decide a medal in an international series. No frickin way.
Maybe not a gold medal, but for the WJC, they schedule the medal games back-to-back.

I'm sort of surprised that the IIHF had the political will to make the gold medal OT 3-on-3, but they explained their thinking:

The new format was proposed as a solution to for avoiding shootouts when deciding a gold medal game, while acknowledging other issues that prevent a 5-on-5 or 4-on-4 overtime sudden-death format.

“There are various reasons we can’t risk a long overtime game in the final,” said IIHF Competition and Coordination Committee Chairman Franz Reindl. “Arena facilities have to turn over quickly, often on the same night as the final, to accommodate new events coming in. There are also concerns from broadcasting and team management that have to be considered as well.”

“But with this new format we are able to address fan and team concerns about the existing shootout format in the final, which has been the major focus of our committee discussions over several seasons.”
The IIHF used to have these games decided by a shootout, which I felt gave it a unique flair, although I get why that's unsatisfying.
