Duran & Abreu two of best defensively in league and the guy between them (Rafaela) arguably the superior defender

#1 prospect in Roman Anthony on way

Sox OF could be special

They were 6th in AL in starter ERA based on primarily
Bello
Houck
Crawford
Criswell

Bello was rocky but 15 of 30 starts 2 runs or less and 20-10 in starts

Every, every, every former pitcher on mlb network from Leiter, Plesac, Peavy ….said Crochet has number one stuff

Giolito ready for camp. I like him if healthy and says is - he’s a legit 3

You got Fitts & Criswell for 6 -8 plus the starter they like they got from Pirates I swap of former first rounders. Love the Sandoval gamble / guy had around a 125 ERA + from 21-23. Beast mind set

If this was stratomatic of my APBA League fantasy stuff I offer a gazillion dollars for Burnes
- but my account gut says they will have 75 M signed up between Crochet, Houck, Bello. I’m all for Burnes but if I owned team I don’t do 8 years / 3 or 4 for 30 M area yes

The Mets & Dodgers are going rouge and will eventually lead to a hard cap and loopholes closed although likely all the present contracts grandfathered in. I don’t see Sox doing this - the Yankees are irked what Mets are doing as they are getting roasted for not being fiscally irresponsible

I go after Yates - love him. Get him 2 years so where Whitlock is

Tanner Scott would be homerun but don’t see it

Give me Bregman, 4th OF, backup C, and Yates or Scott
Wouldn't mind replacing Crawford there. Felt like he was getting pounded in the last 1/3 of the year at least. I could see regression there, but feel like he would have big value to a lot of teams. I would at least keep an open mind. Would love either Tanner Scott or Yates.

He was but he’s got good stuff.

Most he’s ever thrown

Needs to be cut back usage when arm dead - I’d skip him a start every 5 starts - when on he’s really good

Dick Fitts & Cooper Criswell need to contribute- both looked good in limited role

Haha - fantastic

Very creative

My dream scenario is you going at it with Stephen A Smith ripping him a new one

What do you think the age cutoff is for people to get that reference without an explanation? No chance anyone under 30 does, right?

Sad.

One of the few players we could say were as good on the field as they were entertaining off it.

Rest in Peace to one of my all time favorites!
I remember him when he was in Boston for a season and he was always happy and boy did he love the fans. I obviously remember him mostly when he played in Oakland. A sad day for baseball and the sports world.

My favorite Rickey story (which has been denied by everyone involved, but is still testament to his personality) is when he went to spring training with the Mariners and told John Olerud that he used to play with a guy who wore a helmet in the field when he was in Toronto and Olerud had to explain that that was him.

i would have thought more likely he was thinking of a comeback with the A’s this coming season

Of all the sports players who’ve died last 10 years this one really stuns me and feel old

Rickey likes that story about Rickey. My story is third-hand but pretty good. My stepfather knew a fellow who pitched in triple AAA for the A's. He once picked Rickey off first in Spring training and Rickey said: "Nobody picks Rickey off first base."

Rickey is a goldmine of goofy stories/ancedotes.

Some

  • Rickey once asked a teammate how long it would take to drive to the Dominican Republic, which he thought was a clothing store.
  • He once got frost bite after falling asleep with an ice pack strapped to his ankle and had to miss three games.
  • One time, while he was on the Yankees, Rickey bragged about how awesome his new condo was because apparently it had a view of the "Entire State Building".
  • In the last week of his lone season with the Red Sox, Chairman Tom Werner asked Henderson what he would like for his ‘going-away’ gift. Henderson said he wasn’t going anywhere, but he would like owner John Henry’s Mercedes. Werner said it would be tough to get the same make and model in less than a week and Henderson said, “No, I want his car.” Turns out the Sox got Henderson a Red Thunderbird and when he saw it on the field before the last game of the season, Rickey said, “Whose ugly car is on the field?”
  • For his entire career, before every single game Rickey would stand butt-naked in front of his locker and chant, "Rickey is the best" over and over for several minutes. (this one has been confirmed by multiple teammates)
  • to further the above, Rickey struck out and as the next batter was walking past him, he heard Henderson say, “Don’t worry, Rickey, you’re still the best.”
  • Rickey once caused a bit of a kerfuffle in the A's front office when they had an accounting error of 1 million dollars that appeared to have been given out as a check. They couldn't figure out why the error was there. As it turns out, instead of cashing it (which i believe was for a bonus of some type), Rickey framed the f***ing thing and hung it on his wall lmao. He was very proud of it.
  • In Henderson’s first season with San Diego, he boarded the team bus and was looking for a seat. Steve Finley said, “You have tenure, sit wherever you want.” Henderson looked at Finley and said, “Ten years? Ricky’s been playing at least 16, 17 years.”
  • San Diego GM Kevin Towers was trying to contact Rickey at a nearby hotel. He knew Henderson always used fake names to avoid the press, fans, etc. He was trying to think like Rickey and after several attempts; he was able to get Henderson on the phone. Rickey had checked in under Richard Pryor.
  • On being Nolan Ryan’s 5,000th career strikeout: “It gave me no chance. He (Ryan) just blew it by me. But it’s an honor. I’ll have another paragraph in all the baseball books. I’m already in the books three or four times.”

Baseball lost a character with him passing on for sure. Legit reads like something that belongs in a movie like Major League. Aloof apparently everywhere but on the basepaths.
