For what it's worth, Alex Speier says the Sox are "still open" to adding other starters.

Also, healthy Patrick Sandoval is pretty good.

In a vacuum, there's nothing wrong with this move. The concern I have is that they were around $50M under the CBT before it. I have zero expectations that they'll spend above the CBT, and if they follow the last two seasons, then they're likely to spend $10M below it.

Going by that, they spent 25% of their remaining budget on Sandoval and may only have $30M left to play with. Every dollar they spend on cheaper options slowly closes the door on potential impact acquisitions, which they desperately need if they want to get to the 90 win threshold Kennedy was promising.

Of course the water carriers like Miliken love the Sandoval move. I’d like one offseason where we don’t have a rehab deal.

If it was only a few water carriers like Milliken. There are still so many fans that try to spin everything they do like a pure genius moneyball-move.

Don't they realize that this is a terrible look? Can't you sign a Sandoval-type when you are all set and are so much past the threshold that you can declare this signing as pure "luxury".

Cant wait to see the mental gymnastics Red Sox twitter will pull trying to convince others how this is a great move. This move to me just means 2025 is another wash. Which will be a wasted year of the 2 years you have Crochet before letting him walk cause you couldn't afford to out bid other teams.

What a bulls*** signing. Its so blatantly spending money to spend money so they can point to their payroll and say "see we tried". In what world is a starter with a career 4 ERA, 19-45 and 2:1 K/BB ratio worth $9m a year?! Let alone one coming off TJ surgery. Oh, a starter BTW who has never hit 150 IP in a season.

On the bright side, Pablo can pop some champagne. He isnt the worst Sandoval signing anymore

Call me ole fashioned but wins and losses still count.
You're old-fashioned.

Win/Loss records are a horrible way to judge starting pitchers.

I mean, did you see the contract Mike Soroka just signed? How about the deal the Mets gave Griffin Canning after he was DFA'd by the Braves?

It's the market we're in. There's almost no such thing as a bad short-term deal for a competent starting pitcher.

Sandoval has terrible numbers. Call me ole fashioned but wins and losses still count. Get the last place duckboats ready. This franchise laughably cheap, but also inept.
Nolan Ryan was a .500 pitcher and is in the Hall Of Fame.
Crochet has a terrible won / loss record.
I look at ERA ( call me old school), this is the most important stat to look at IMO.
He has a career 4.00 ERA.
Do I like this signing, not really, would have rather given Buehler more money and signed him, or better yet, anti up and pay Burnes.

Just saw Sox picked up Patrick Sandoval.

he can be a bit wild but healthy he’s got a heck of an arm

Nice move - low risk high reward

Dan, what are you smoking today bro?
He isn't wrong, but that should not be a pitching move expected to help the Sox contend this year. I would hope they still plan on adding a more substantial starter considering Sandoval is just a lottery ticket.

That is kind of the whole point that most of us are making and not liking this at all. Basically others in here saying it is a good move are for the Red Sox having the plan of "Ya see, we plan ahead. That way we don't have to do anything right now."

Sandoval would be a great move IF they were spending like it was the Dombrowski era. If you're a rich team, moves like that are exactly the ones you should be making. Now, of course, you need to act like you're a rich team.

If this is all they do to address the rotation I will be in full agreement with you. If they add Flaherty, or Buehler, or Castillo/Lopez I will feel a bit better. As much as I like Corbin Burned I wouldn't give him 8 years and almost 250 million. I don't think it ages well and we will be complaining about it within a couple of years. I don't want to see a Corey Kluber regression on a big money contract.

That has been the problem with this organization for years now. To many IFs

Why ? I’m a hardcore baseball guy. I’ve already watched the first 25 minutes of Hot Stove (Jon Merosi section)

I traded Quantrill in my baseball league (when with Cleveland) for Sandoval two years ago - watched him all the time. Really liked him was pissed I lost him to elbow surgery

Love his stuff and lefty - both he and Reid Detmers gave the Halos hope but Detmers and Sandoval go hurt. They had making of dynamic young duo

ASIDE: came out of gym got in vehicle and saw bunch of texts from Joe (Glorydaze) and Lou

Saw the Passen tweet from Joe so wasn’t sure what happened

Then I see it’s Sandoval

Lou weighs in to Joe thinking exactly like me

To top it off I’m in a 14 person APBA text group of my local buddies who play in a baseball league some since 1973 when we were 10-13 years old playing stratomatic and a couple were saying same - worth the shot, good arm, lefty, highly competitive

So with all due respect to people who post here going to go with people who’s opinions I respect plus my own lol

Bloom or Breslow, they're just empty suits doing John Henry's bidding.

It's rather pathetic that in one of the best free agent classes of starting pitchers ever, the Red Sox with their budget and revenue trade valuable prospects for one starter in order to save money and then go sign a second half lottery ticket TJ guy for peanuts for the third damn year in a row.
