Ryan Whitney was a top ten scorer amongst defensemen at his peak and played 22+ minutes. Yes, I would gladly take that with a top ten pick.

It's not like getting a 2026 1st would be bad, but I'm definitely hoping that they get a 1st this year at about 11th overall from the Rangers. I really like O'Brien and Smith at that pick if they could pull it off, I'm not sure you could get a prospect on that level if the Rangers 1st is at like 25th overall next year.

I definitely don't think Hagens is a bad prospect and I'd love if the Penguins got him, but I feel he's not quite as good as some people have said. His production reminds me a lot of Kent Johnson, who was the #5 pick in 2021. I like Johnson so I don't mean that as a knock, but I feel like Hagens is getting compared to better players than Johnson and I'm not sure I see it.

Hagens at #5 or #6 feels like where he should be going in a normal draft, but I don't think there are 4 or 5 better players than Hagens in this draft.

I want the Pens to win the McKenna and Dupont lottos. Speaking of which, I've asked this to Puckpedia and Pensburgh without any definitive answer: What constitutes using up one of the two in five year draft "wins?" Any time a team draft #1 or #2 regardless of their standings?

He's a Sullivan pick for sure.

Boston college, good two-way player, on the smaller side. I think if they had the choice between Misa and Hagens, Sullivan would push for Hagens 100%.

Eh… no offense but this is lazy. Just stat comparing. Hagens is a much, much better skater than Johnson and has shredded international tournaments.

I think the question with Hagens is if he has a ton of development runway left or if he is one of these guys who maybe peaked a little early.

Yeah, the Pens should jump on Hagens if he’s still there at 6 or 7 or wherever they pick…upside is very high even if he’s not the biggest guy right now

I am not sure about the upside. I think that is the question with him and it’s very hard to get a read on.

Is he a 55 point guy, a 70-80 point guy, or a 100 point guy in his prime?

But yeah. Him falling to us at 6 or 7 is def best case scenario in those slots.

Well, by that I mean if you hit on him, he’ll be better than other options at that position to select, but who knows how any of these guys will really turn out. But he has the two things we should be looking at first and foremost in our first round pick: very good skating and very high hockey IQ

I guess, but they'd probably lottery protect the 2026 1st and have to give up a less protected 2027 1st otherwise. That just puts them in the same position. I see them just taking their higher pick this year and giving up next year's in the belief that Ziba/Kreider etc bounce back a little
 
Hagens is a poor man's Hughes I think. Probably a better winger than a center at the NHL level. I don't see him winning battles defensively or even being particularly strong on faceoffs.

If you want to go this route, Johnson had 9 points in 7 games in the WJC, 5 points in 5 games in the Olympics and 7 points in 10 games in the world championship for Canada. It doesn't seem like Johnson's international track record is an issue.

The hype some put around Hagens doesn't seem to match the production, he's at 35 points in 35 games while playing on the team as Leonard and Perreault. It is just stat watching but the numbers don't really pop out there any more than Kent Johnson's did.

Not if they anticipate being competitive. Also could give us the pick this year and move the ‘26 pick unprotected for max returns if Drury had some balls.

May not like the players projected in their range.

And obviously— they also can’t lottery protect or move the ‘26 pick if they keep it this year.

Overall I don’t think it necessarily signals weakness if they give us this years pick.
