Gabe on the PP 4 on 3 in OT, but the first unit decided to stay out for 95 seconds and didnt do anything so they didnt even have time to set up.

Gauthier was Turd Cutter Gauthier on that PP.
He literally shoots everything and cant even the net most of the time.

He had a predetermined move to slip it five hole. It was basically Olli Jokinen with a goalie going yolo.
That is how I saw it as well. He got the legs moving and wanted the five hole but he could have (should have) easily scored on his backhand if he continued with the puck. Luckily it shanked off his stick because there was not much room five hole.

Good game to watch.

USA got their shit together defensively in the third. If they go all the way that’s what they’ll need to do. Not sure they are strong enough in that part of the game. Definitely enough offense though

I think they get knocked out eventually by Canada or Sweden.

They're very much built for WEEEEEEEEE hockey. If the Czech and their structure can hang with the US those teams can too except they'll do it with more firepower coming back.

Maybe not Canada because they'll probably try to WEEEEEEEEEEE back.

He didnt shank it. The goalie just got stuck instead of sliding across, thus there was no five hole.

I like GP a LOT but this step up in game speed and talent vs the NCAA definitely exposes some things he has to work on.

He is throwing the puck around more hastily than in the NCAA leading to some bad turnovers. To me this indicates the speed of the game is heightened relative to what he is used to and is impacting his processing time. Nothing he can't get past, just something I've observed.

While I've already laid out my opinion on what he has to work on, I just disagree on a couple of things. I most strongly believe that related to Swiss and Norway, the competition and speed are absolutely NOT a step up from NCAA talent that he's faced. Czechia has a good defensive structure and size which was a problem for not only Gabe but his whole line and the team.

I think a bigger impact is the rink size and just jitters. Like you, I saw him trying to pass the puck much quicker in the first two games but he had the time to make plays. He was deferring TOO much. In the opposite direction, his linemates' tendencies to play selfishly were magnified. I thought he played better in this game than the first two actually and that's with a step up in competition comparatively.

While this tournament can be fun to watch (This last game was fun, the first two were boring af) I don't take much stock into player results at all as far as amending my expectations going forward.

Is Gabe having a disappointing tournament? 3 points in 3 games with all the scoring is underwhelming.
He's been fine. Nazar is 19 and will be 20 in a couple of weeks. Howard will be 20 in March. Brindley and Snuggerud are older and in their second WJC. His BC teammates Smith and Leonard are also just 18 and in their first tournament and have 3 and 2 points.

This is one of the best and deepest teams the US has iced in years. They're leaning on the returning players. Perreault doesn't play as much and gets PP2 time. It's not an idictment of his abilities but rather a testament to how good the US team is on paper.

I think he's had some moments where he looked a little behind the play or made some bad decisions but has also had some really great moments where you see the skill. Next tournament I'd expect him to be relied on for major contributions. But what he's done so far this tournament is I think about what could have reasonably been expected.

Pretty much sums up what I wanted to say. USA u20 is always stacked with D+2 players. Expect his line to be USAs top-line next year when the WJC is in Ottawa.

For a 18 year old playing on a line of 18 year olds? Nope.

He hasn't looked out of place at all out there, his line has had their moments for sure. First PP unit also seems to hog a lot of the time so they aren't really getting much out there to help pad their stats.

Like @nyr2k2 said, next year his line will be the line that is heavily relied on.

Yeah the old NCAA style age-ocracy is at play
