OT: 2024 Washington Commanders thread: change we can believe in!

Cool I guess.

So, we ruined the Bears franchise with the Hail Jayden, and then we ruined Brn Johnson's last, best shot w. DET. It's match made by Washington!

I also love that this takes one of the presumably most attractive jobs for KK -- the chance to reunite with Caleb and see if he can make the second of the top 2 QBs of the '24 draft a superstar-- off the board before we're even done playing.

We were talking about Lattimore on Sunday. I saw him hit one dude as he was going out of bounds and that was about it. But for a corner that is a great compliment. So yeah, let’s keep them to their sides. But we need to lock down the middle of the field. That is where they kill us.
It struck me during the game that he actually came up and was in on several run stops, and that I never heard his name in coverage.

He forced their passing game to challenge Mikey -- BWAH-HA-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Ben Johnson taking the Bears jobs feels likes bitterness for not taking the Commanders job. No idea that last report of him wanting to run with Howell.

Crow eating time ....

I was the "adjustment" guy. I was wrong.

Scoring 38, 42 and 34 in weeks 3, 4 and 5 .. I was the debbie downer "D coordinators have film now, they are going to adjust .. KK and JD need to adjust to the adjustment before you can think this isnt fools gold .. we are a 8-9 team at best"

Offense did sputter a bit around the Cowboys game (wks 8-12) but .. Kliff cliff never happened. JD had the rib injury week 7, O line guys started dropping around that time

Im sorry Kliff Kingsbury .. you did a great f***ing job this year

I think back then I said there is no adjustment for perfect execution on offense. JD, the WRs and the OL, except for a brief setback, continued to get better, especially JD. Now they are kinda an unstoppable machine, only held back by their own mistakes. But this team is playing almost perfectly mistake free in the 4th qtr, a reflection of JD's calmness, which rubs off on everyone. KK, JD, the players, they all deserve to be here right now. Its sofa king awesome!

There goes our AGM..likely to the Jet to be GM.

Here's the source, it seems. Second in person interview.

Not even gonna' pretend I have an inkling of how important/prominent Newmark was in the development of the roster since he came onboard, but my instinct is that AP can fill the role adequately.

Same ignorance caveat as above, but feels like if he's the most significant loss we experience, we'll have done well. Really want to keep the coaches and the FO principle, but I don't see any way Peters leaves -- he's got a great owner with deep pockets, a metric butt-load of cap space (still), a (almost) full complement of draft picks, the best young QB in the game, and a magical culture.

(All of the above also applies to any coach who would be leaving for anything other than a golden opportunity -- which, in fairness, could be several of them.)

Peters won't be going anywhere, like, ever. If he doesn't win GM of the year, someone should be shot, then stabbed, then shot again, then kicked in the balls. His top staff will change over time, and Newmark was a dream hire but never really thought of as a long term assistant. DQ will also be around for a long while, KK will probably depart next year depending on how things go this year and next. But I will trust in AP and DQ to keep stocking the cupboard with talent to replace any losses.

Newmark was responsible for player personnel in Detroit for a while, so through the recent lean years and their very recent successful rebuild. He was Director of Player Personnel starting in 2016, when they went 9-7 and made the playoffs. They got worse every year dropping to 3-13 in 2021 under first year head coach Dan Campbell and newly named GM Brad Holmes (who came from St Louis). Then they started getting better each year until they were losing to use jus ta few days ago.

So, essentially, while Newmark was in charge of personnel in Detroit, they got much worse, then Holmes and Campbell showed up and they got really good. So yeah, its impossible to say how much of their success or our success was attributable to Lance Newmark. I think we'll survive this offseason in good shape :D

If we go to the super bowl and win - how do you not give the MVP to jayden? It clearly shouldnt be lamar at this point, and allen would either be losing to KC or us in this scenario. I know its traditionally a regular season award, but this run is unprecedented for a rookie. Not just in the playoffs but the stats he's accumulated in the season and turning a 4-13 team into this.

Its not just a regular season award, I believe the voting was all done at the end of the regular season. So the award is in the books, just not public yet, I believe.

Apart from the technicality, I do think JD is the most valuable player in the NFL right now. He's generating buzz like no one I can recall, 'cept maybe Travis and Taylor but that's different.

Well if the voting is all done before the playoffs, how can it not be a regular season award?

I'm saying not only is it a regular season award, they cannot factor in the playoffs if they wanted to because the votes are already in. Its not "just" a regular season award, maybe I should have said "its purely a regular season award"

Been doing some thinking about this.

I think realistically the MVP should be between 2 players: Jayden and Saquon.

Lamar, Allen and Burrow all had statistically better seasons, and Mahomes led his team to more wins. But aside from the Bengals, the other teams are all veteran squads whose cores have been together for years. If you took their QBs away for the season or a big chunk of their games, their teams would still be competitive -- they have an established way that they play that would prevent them from going into the shitter. Take Allen or Lamar away and BUF and BAL win with their running game and their D. Take Mahomes away and KC wins with its D, Andy Reid out-coaching everyone, and the zebras under mandate to support the Chiefs. Take Burrow away and CIN still sucks, just harder.

That brings us to SB. We're used to thinking of the Iggles as powerhouse, but they fell apart last season, with their great OL and an almost as great defense as this year's edition. Hurts is what he is -- a decent QB at best who's a good runner and unstoppable on short yardage (in large part due to his murderous OL.) Then they add Saquon and they are almost unbeatable. He has turned Hurts, AJB, Devonta and Goeddert into complementary pieces. He is the show.

And Jayden? Take him off this team and what do you have? Do Howell, JJMcC or Maye turn this offense into an automatic game-winning, last-drive miracle machine? Impossible to know for sure, but logic says something that's never happened before probably doesn't happen under a anybody else. The entire energy of the team is different because they have Jayden. Their belief that they can -- and will -- win every game comes from stepping on the field with a ****ing assassin leading them.

There is one guy who led 5 game-winning drives (not counting playoffs, which came post-voting) in the 4th Qtr and OT, 4 of which came on the last play. And that's not counting the 1st DAL game where he pulled us back and then our K and KO coverage team made the call from inside the house. (****ers)

He's the MVP.

Guilty of homer bias? 100%. But correct? 1,000%

It really is the “who is the best (QB) player in the league during the regular season reward”……stop, period.

Lamar’s big QB stats were simply better. That’s why it will be LJ over Allen….we’ll see. I’d also argue for Barkley…he’s deserving of being in the conversation.

But this team is playing almost perfectly mistake free in the 4th qtr, a reflection of JD's calmness, which rubs off on everyone.
This. JD’s zen-like calm under pressure is everything. It buys extra time for plays to develop and ‘mates to get open and it is totally inspiring - when leaders don’t panic, it keeps everyone else centered and focused.

I’ve been impressed with our O-line play, particularly amid all the injuries. But let’s face it, it’s a middling O-line at best, even before Cosmo went down. But JD’s calm in the pocket, his ability to buy an extra half-second simply because he refrains from panicking while the pocket starts to collapse is other-worldly. And obviously, his decision-making about when to pull it down and run is elite as well. But his calm buys him an extra chunk of time before making his decisions that other QBs don’t have access to.

Like I have a ton of respect for Sam Howell who played some good games under difficult circumstances, but that guy went into “oh f***” mode at a point in which JD is still scanning and processing. Now part of this because JD’s escapability buys him more space than Howell could ever have dreamed of, but a big chunk of it is because he’s just not f***ing phased about anything.

Jayden's officially ROTY and OROTY:

(Also, both his WRs are also on the All Rookie Team -- which is a damning statement about LSU's defense in '23)

Washington Redmanders are doing something special. Not just this year… but for years to come. People want to be part of something special, because most people never will. You never know how things break over the years, but ownership seems great, AP in his first job will be here long term, DQ will be here medium to long term (shelf life different for coaches). I think KK will surely be back next year, and maybe 2-3 more. great article on ESPN… I’ll try and find it.

EDIT: article on KK Thailand trips, relationships and Jayden Daniels: How Kliff Kingsbury got his swagger back in D.C.
