Sucks it took the NFL 3 days to credit Newton with his first career sack. Quinn got it corrected. Johnny promised to baptize all the teams that passed on him on draft day. Daniel Jones is lined up to be his next victim.

I assume all fans have seen this Baldy piece on Newton but if not, its mandatory viewing. He had me at: Hands like Anvils

The strategy of going after guys who had lots of experience and were captains/leaders sure seems like a good one so far.
Yeah but no. Ron did the same same thing. He wanted leaders — but he picked the wrong leaders.

Talent wins. Peters has been …seemingly, as it’s still early….. good at finding talent.

I recall this board was ultra unhappy with Newton being picked. Having 2 “stud” DT’s made it seem like a bad choice.

And now? Allen out for the year (forever, as a Skin, I’m think) and that 20m salary slot can be much better used.

I love Allen. But off we go?

That's how I see it. Go with Payne/Newton next year and use the cap space elsewhere.

I wouldn’t go that far….but there were other attractive options….the thought being we already had 2 stud DTs…..it was just a surprise. Hard not to like the pick after the fact when he had a 1st round grade.

Maybe they had already projected that Allen was “gone” after this year….

Yeah it was a surprise for me re: Newton more than anything. For me the NFL is probably the hardest for me trying to resist drafting for need versus BPA. Now that we have some legit good draft evaluators 'finally' it could be a new day for me.

Totally…it’s because you can draft and realize the satisfier of that need immediately if you grab the right guy…not much cooking to do after the draft with slightly older guys vs 18 yr olds…

I totally forgot we drafted Ben Sinnott in the 2nd round. 2 catches for 6 yards on the season.

My understanding is that most rookie TE’s spend their first season (struggling) to learn how to block in the NFL. Sinnott was a good receiver in college, so hopefully those skills don’t go anywhere.

Still not sure what they envision for him - maybe an all around H back, like a Kyle Juszczyk. But, it’s great that he has Ertz as a mentor.

Here's a sentence that hasn't been written or uttered this century -- since before Dan Snyder owned an NFL franchise: players want to wind up in Washington playing for the Commanders.

In recent weeks, there have been players who privately stated or told their agents that they want to be traded to the Commanders, league sources told ESPN.

BPA vs. need gets subjective pretty early in the NFL, too. In our case with Newton where he was easily the BPA, NFL rookies can contribute something immediately and mature quickly, and teams are so rarely locked in to guaranteed contracts with crippling hits. So you're only ever really a year away from being able to discard a big salary in favor of the cost-controlled kid that just fell into your lap.

That's pretty foreign to us as hockey fans, where need rarely matters because of how long it takes to develop a rookie in the vast majority of cases.

In other words, anyone opposed to the Newton pick was just being silly. ;) That was a no-brainer. Every pundit out there's immediate review of the pick as it was happening was, "The Commanders just got a steal."

I totally forgot we drafted Ben Sinnott in the 2nd round. 2 catches for 6 yards on the season.

His versatility is the big draw, and his NFL learning curve is steeper than most because he's considered an elite blocker (from both TE and backfield positions) and a solid pass-catcher. I forget whether it was Peters or Quinn who had that quote about him in camp, saying they see him being part of potentially 3 position groups -- TE, O-line, and running backs.

They want him to (eventually) be a key piece that contributes in a lot of ways. This isn't a TE you're going to fairly judge on receiving stats alone. This is the type of guy that helps protect a mobile QB by smartly pivoting moment-to-moment between making the best block and knowing when to bail out and get open for the outlet.

That type of comprehensive smarts and versatile role takes a little more time to develop. Be patient with this guy, because he could be extremely valuable if he fully pans out.

Yea, sounds like they want him as a versatile H back, like Kyle Juszczyk. He definitely has a bunch of stuff to learn, and Ertz is great as Jayden’s safety valve for now.

Dianna Russini reported that AP is calling around cause Quinn wants “a jolt” at CB. Specifically in matching up with Philly’s elite WRs. Makes sense, as the NFCE crown will be determined by those games. The Pats’ Jonathan Jones was a name thrown out.

LASTLY: Luvu, and now BRob are officially a go for tomorrow. HAIL!

Of course they weren't drafting for experience solely, but from the reporting in the aftermath of the draft, it was a big part of the calculus of what earned them the tag that they developed for guys they targeted.

And Ron was supposedly all about character -- but, clearly, they didn't view talent and adaptability to the pro game with the same emphasis.

I think that maturity and number of snaps played have translated really well into so many of these guys being ready to play meaningfully already this season.

It also seems like our coaching staff was ready to grab these guys and unlock their potential. Its almost as if the FO and the coaches are completely in sync. Our best teams ever came out of that sort of culture.
