It’s the key thing that separated Joe West and Angel Hernandez from other terrible umpires, they were/are also huge arrogant jerks.

Never forget that Joe West hung on well past his best-before date and while his skill and health degraded solely so that he could chase the all-time games umpired record. I don't think there's a purer example of how he was in it for himself than that.

Joe West blew a perfect game for a guy with 2 outs as well.

Good home opener win! Berrios pitched a gem, bats had some good moments, good defense except IKF.

Chad Green is not closer material though.

Great win. Green was brutal we desperately need some back end arms.

Was shocked David played.

A lot of positives tonight. Some hits with RISP and finally some SBs. Need more stolen base attempts.

Need more balls pulled though. I feel the Jays don't use their power enough.

In some alternate timeline somewhere, Morrow is just finishing up a 50 WAR career.

Big talent, great stuff, just couldn't stay healthy and also was diabetic and had trouble managing his blood sugar levels as a starter. Even at the end of his career as a reliever he was dominant and put up a sub-2.00 ERA over three partial seasons. Like you, I always thought he was going to be a star for this team right up until he left.

I'm say Morrow and Dustin McGowan are right up there in the "What could have been?" category. Both had all the tools to be elite pitchers.

It was the right move but it shows how on edge the fan base is with this team
Yeah you noticed it at the lineup call out too. Notable boos for hitting coaches and Schneider.

Flair enough…. This coaching group needs to feel the pressure.

I’ll say I’m glad IKF is coming up with some good contributions. I don’t like how people were writing him off before the season started. I’m pulling for him.

Bats were alive.
The ball carries, at least to to RF. Bo’s liner would have hit the wall against a hurricane, but if those HRs by Seattle are any indication, it bodes well.

Overall the Dome looks great, although the section right behind home is little funky looking.

Other than the fact that both were diabetic
interesting.

this post made me want to check on what other players/athletes had type 1 diabetes.

No real standouts as far as successful athletes, although there is a long enough list of athletes with long careers.

I would say best would be Bobby Clarke and Current world no.2 tennis player Alexander Zverev. Also apparently our very own Max Domi (?). He's pretty great.

It has a unique negative impact on pitchers because they impose significant wear on their arms regularly. One of the big downsides is that the players don't recover very quickly.

If Domi, Clarke, or Zverev gets hurt, they are out long term, but they all theoretically can play every game without issue.

For a pitcher, dead arm is a normal thing at a certain point and they simply can't push past it (essentially, they could need a DL stint in July just to rest to have any real chance of making it through the year).

For the 5th batter spot i think until Jansen comes back Schneider is the only option. The other guys simply doesn't have what it takes at bat. There's only one way to find out if Schneider can play on a more consistent basis.

I think we can be really good, we just another masher to put in the middle of that lineup. Come on, Atkins!

And Berrios decided "I am going to be the ace this year!"
Agree. They need another bat in the middle and if they can't find it by trade then try to find it internally. Try guys. Kirk, IKF, KK and Varsho are not the solution. They are fine for the bottom 3 of the lineup and outside Kirk are all very good defensive player but you got to have a better batter behind Turner imo. Try Schneider. If it doesn't work try a kid from AAA or Clement. Try something stop moving pieces around expecting things to work for no reason.

I think people make assumptions about Kirk's defense based on his build, but he's an elite defensive catcher.

It's crazy how almost everything that everyone thought about baseball in the 1970s and 1980s was totally wrong.
starters used to throw 88mph fastballs. Obviously teams would use different strategies than today.

that was the best part of opening day. Listening to the stat guy talk about hitting at the skydome. Maybe Mark Shapiro and his dream of being an architect like George Kostanza didn't wreck baseball after all.

Tyler O’Neill is currently the best hitter in baseball. Obviously he’s not this good, but the underlying numbers showed he was due to hit much better than his last couple of years to go along with good defence in LF.

Imagine if we traded for him instead of re-sign KK.

Kirk's transition in just 3 years from a young power-hitting DH/C with questions about his defense to an light slap-hitting elite defensive catcher has been ... something.
Interestingly enough, that's not far off from the way Jansen's career went the first few years. Catchers are often complicated and at least seem to take more time to develop offensively because there's so much more they have to focus on compared to every other position.

Another HR....wow (nice hanger by Burnes lol)

It sucks because he went for peanuts to a division rival. Definitely a missed opportunity
