Rumor: 2024 Trade Rumors and Free Agency Thread: Post Deadline

I dunno, EJ looks pretty bad out there to me already. Swimming in his own zone, panicking with the puck. The mind is willing but the flesh is weak

I thought EJ played ok against Chicago, good against Calgary, and great against Dallas.

I haven't seen any panic with the puck. I think he's actually been very good with the puck. Better than I thought he'd be. Great at protecting it and then getting it to Girard or the forwards. Calling for the puck so he could rush it up ice. Skating well and handling the puck well. Chipping it high out of the zone without icing it like he's known to do.

Didn't see any positional issues last game. The slide play is a desperation play, and I believe they were all after mistakes by other players, like the one after Lindgren's turnover that led to a mad scramble.

According to some he played fairly well in the few games he played with Philly this year too, they just wanted to play the younger D men.

He didn't get the big hat after the Stars game for just being a good locker room guy. He played well and his teammates recognized it. Kelly gave it to him and I think he's only known him for a week or so.

And this is in a #4 role. We're talking about perhaps bringing him back in a #7 role which is most likely a decision of him vs Middleton next year.

I’m not going to debate EJ’s play with you(I think he was awful against Dallas), but you can’t sit here and say he’s playing a #4 role.

He’s clearly the #6.

He played the least amount of minutes against Dallas and those minutes still favoured EJ’s usage because Malinski doesn’t play PP or PK. Avs had 6 powerplays and EJ played the PK. Malinski still played more than him.

No matter who’s dressed, Erik Johnson is the 6th defenseman. Let’s be honest about that.

I also don't think Lindgren signs for anything under $4.5M per, which he made this year.
He was reportedly playing top pairing for NYR when younger. Seems he stepped back bit time and will need to accept reality most likely. Doesn't change that defenders like him tend to get overpaid, but even 4.5 is a significant overpayment.

Last year the market was favorable to defensemen. Even veterans like Brendan Dillion ($4Mx3) and Joel Edmundson ($3.85Mx4) got paid.

Consider that the cap is going up a lot and Lindgren is going to be attractive to many teams. Just turned 27, career high in points (21), and has a chance to increase his stock further if Colorado goes on a deep run. I could see a team giving him the Matt Roy ($5.75Mx6) deal or at the very least the Zadorov deal ($5Mx6).

Maybe. But whatever team that is will be making a huge mistake. With higher expectations I don't see how he is worth it. Looks like a $3m defender to me.

Have to imagine at some point teams will recognize their mistakes with these overpayments to 4-6 defenders.

I think he's a fine #4. Lindgren was severely overplayed in New York, he was stapled to Adam Fox (2.4K min) nearly as much as Makar and Toews were together (2.7K min) the past three years. Anecdotally, the trade was universally disliked, but here we are seven games later discussing permutations that include Lindgren being locked up.

I don't think any team is going to bring him in and expect him to be their #2 like he was in NY. The cap is supposed to go up $16M over the next two years, $5M aav is going to be the new $4M aav.

Fair. In minutes he was a #6, because they gave him spot duty on the second pair, but he played on that second pair, next to the #3 the entire game, against the competition the 2nd pair faces. If they had to kill more than one penalty, he probably wouldn't have been #6 in minutes either.

I haven't seen any examples of how he was "awful" against Dallas. He made lots of good little plays and wasn't at fault for any of the goals.

The entire team held Dallas to 15 shots with 6 minutes left in the third period. Not sure how they could do that with a defenseman playing awful. Don't see why the team would give the big hat to someone who was awful in a game they almost blew the lead on either. Would be kind of a weird message to send.

Analytics back up the eye test with EJ against Dallas too. In most categories, the only D man with better analytics in the game was Makar.

Among D Men

Corsi - 2nd
xGoals% - 2nd
On Ice xGoals Differential - 2nd
Takeaways - 1st (tied for team lead with 2)
Giveaways - 1st (tied for team lead with 0)

EJ has been good as a role player. As long as they don't give him too much TOI overall he should be fine.

The EJ slide is just something you live with at this point lol.

He's definitely trusted more by Bednar than any other fringe D man, and can actually give you a reliable 10 to 13 minutes.

Bednar trusting all of the key positions in his lineup makes a huge difference.

Is there any GM in the league that leaks and uses the media more than Tulsky in Carolina? The Guentzal leaks in the summer, all the Mikko leaks. I'm sure there's other examples, but I don't really follow the Canes.

Now he's talking to Leburn, and he's clearly trying to let it be known they'll pursue Marner, while making sure Lebrun says they didn't tamper. Not sure why any GM or player would want to do business with this guy.

“Well, and let’s be clear, when we did this interview on Sunday for a piece I wrote in the Athletic on Monday, we did not mention the name Mitch Marner, because that would be tampering."

"But what we did discuss is the fact that the Carolina Hurricanes have a lot of salary cap room this offseason. In fact, Tulsky said even if he tried to sign all of his players on expired deals, he would still be $20 million under the salary cap this summer."

"But yeah, I’ll say it. I mean, if Mitch Marner does go to market July 1st, I would expect the Hurricanes to be one of the teams at least finding out if they can be on his list, because they tried to trade for him, as we know that’s been reported."

"So it’s fascinating from that point of view. But also in terms of Carolina saying, ‘Hey, we’re contenders right now, but we tend to be very aggressive this summer.'”

He's also been on the Sheet at least twice now, both times right after the Rantanen trades. You'll still get the Sakic/Yzerman/Lamorello types, but as younger talent (especially those coming from more corporate backgrounds like Tulsky) replaces the old timers, I think we'll see more openness as podcasting and social media have exploded to make it easier to leverage PR to enhance the overall strategy of a franchise. I'm sure some are looking at the sway that Biz has from Chiclets alone and thinking they have to keep up. Not sure if it's smart, but as a fan, I sure enjoy getting more inside baseball--especially if it's coming from the horse's mouth directly.

He had a quite that he was happy to be out of Buffalo and he's younger and maybe cheaper
Given the Avs makeup in the bottom 4, with Girard and Malinski, a not-so-physical puck-moving RHD probably isn't the type of Dman the Avs need to be adding to replace Manson.

If they do that you have Makar/Malinski/Jokiharju on the right side which lacks size, and Makar would be eating too many PK minutes.

The only way it might make sense would be if Malinski gets traded for assets and Jokiharju is his replacement, but then again Malinski will likely have a cheaper caphit than Jokiharju so that swap probably wouldn't make that much sense either from a roster building perspective.

What's the general consensus here for what Malinski's next contract will look like?

He had a nice game last night against Toronto so I thought I'd look at that a bit closer.

Here are some of his stats and metrics. This season he has a 52.4 CF% and 10 points. Over his two seasons with the Avs he's been pacing for 20 points.

He's not being overly sheltered since he's getting 56.3% DZ starts this season, and as shown in the chart below he also has a pretty even split for quality of competition, facing top lines about as much as he faces bottom lines.

His 5v5 metrics put him right around team average. His 5v5 xGF/xGA numbers are better than Manson and Lindgren.

The chart below, in particular the Smoothed 5v5 xG/60 chart, shows that he's consistently had a positive impact at 5v5, apart from the period in the middle of the season where he was partnered with Middleton a lot (which was a disaster).
