Ancestral Teams

Lately I’ve seen people here putting together all-time teams from different countries, lefties vs righties, and so on. So I decided to do a rather silly compilation that is a bit more challenging. Create teams based on the ancestry of former and current players (Predominantly NHL’ers)

In the past, it was not uncommon for countries like Italy, Netherlands, Germany, Austria and others, to bolster their national teams with predominantly North American players who had ancestral connections to that specific country. Italians for example were known to have a lot of “Oriundi” players who had close ancestral ties to Italy. They acquired citizenship more easily than immigrants not of native extraction

I have kept it within two generations (Parents and Grandparents). This means that at least one parent or grandparent of the player must be a native of the country the player is representing.

A player can not be born in the country he is representing, although I made a few exceptions for players born in so called non-traditional hockey countries.

There are of course players that have roots in several countries, so I used them where I thought they were needed the most.

Some examples of teams:

Ukraine

Andreychuk- Gretzky- Bossy(half)
Babych- Hawerchuk- Poddubny
Bucyk- Horvath- Stastiuk
Tkaczuk- Federko- Shack
Bozak, Semenko

Babych- Makar
Diduck- Daneyko
Melnyk- Boychuk
Houda

Sawchuk
Bower
Broda
Malarchuk

Cheated a bit with Bossy who is half ukranian. I tried to do this purely from memory, Had trouble remembering many Ukr defensemen. Good forwards and good goalies. Weak on D, would have an absolutely lethal powerplay.

Andreychuk- Gretzky- Bossy
Hawerchuk- Babych

You can put Sweeney Schriner into Russian Empire team (was born there) or into DACH team (was German)

Tell an Irishman to his face that you put him on Team United Kingdom and see what happens
Ukraine

Hawerchuk
Makar

Well done, although both Hawerchuk and Makar would not qualify according to my criteria (at least one parent or grandparent born there).

I put Hawerchuk on team UK (England) because that’s where his maternal grandmother was born.
His Ukrainian roots go further back. His paternal greatgrandparents were born there, so technically he doesn't qualify. The same goes for Cale Makar, his paternal greatgrandparents came from Ukraine.

As for Ireland, you are right McGarnagle, but technically UK includes Northern Ireland, so that's why I included it. Scottish people are pretty proud as well, and would probably react in the same way as the Irishman.
