Does USA have to beat Slovakia in regulation to win group B?

I thought todays game was very entertaining, but I have a feeling this next one will top it. Goodluck, hope USA beats the Slovaks.
Whichever team wins, regardless of how, takes first in group and loser, regardless of type, takes second. Barring something unexpected, Winner path is Finland then Canada/Czech, loser path is Germany, then Sweden/the winner of Switzerland/Norway (it’ll be Sweden in the semis)

Cant see team USA winning gold the way they are playing, the top line isnt working, the BC line remains young and immature, Smith isnt the greatest 200 ft. center, Perreault is prone to mistakes and Leonard does his best to stabilize the line. The Howard Nazar Brindley line is easily your best one IMO, but remains on the small side. I dont think putting your 3 big guys on the same line is the best option TBH, first its not really working, second that line lacks dynamism, thirdly, your 2nd and 3rd line lack size. I think it would be smarter to demote McGroarty who isnt having a very good tournament to say the least.

In net you are quite fine, both goaltenders have done the job. Defensively its not always pretty but at least Hutson looks to have found his game, what is encouraging. But first and foremost, team USA hasnt been playing very structured hockey. 1 st game was quite ugly against Norway, 2nd game was better, today was a pretty weak showing considering all the talent on this team and its not like team CZE was really strong this year either, their D core is really bad, especially with the loss od Jiricek and thats a pretty young team. I was expecting much more from team USA, quite disappointed. On the positive side, they still won their games in a weak group, so maybe the motivation hasnt quite been there yet.

So... Is it better to lose or win?

Lol at playing Casey on the 3rd pair. His absence today was noticeably painful. But since he's a devils prospect I realize you have to hate him.

idno anything about the guy...but i can't honestly imagine anyone trivializing a prospect simply because of which team drafted them. i mean if they're obviously legit why deliberately make yourself look dumb by pretending otherwise? i mean i could not possibly care less which team a player belongs to. i don't dislike any nhl players or teams. sure every fanbase has an element that sucks. maybe i'm the crazy one but i kinda see players/teams and noisemakers around them as entirely different things.

as far as casey, i've been personally underwhelmed - don't panic though, that's just a limited impression. it has nothing to do with nhl teams. i'd also say for the wjc... aside from buium it's more or less how i feel about all the usa dmen. i've admittedly never been focused on him and i haven't seen too many of his ncaa games either. it's a limited and initial takeaway, but the times i've noticed him have been almost entirely for negatives. now as a dman, by nature your mistakes are magnified and many good things that ultimately make a big difference can go unnoticed. he's also put up very impressive numbers at a very high level so clearly he's done a lot of things right...but to date i simply haven't seen any difference making plays showing the iq he's known for in my observations. he's not a dynamic skater and i've seen a few weak defensive plays. can't stress enough tho this isn't about putting him down. i mean adam fox is one of the best in the game, but he's exactly the kind of player i could see having the same impression of if i saw the wrong handful of ncaa/wjc games and didn't have any particular focus on him. you could have a less than favorable impression of anyone if you aren't paying attention to details or simply get a bad sample size.

i'm actually curious to take a closer look next time i see casey now. i might have a very different opinion if i do, but i think the bigger takeaway is for all the positives, there are legitimate reaons to be skeptical about how he projects where he should slot in this lineup - right or wrong.

That's Pavel's bit. He did the same thing with Jack Hughes. I'm pretty sure he still thinks Alex Turcotte is better.

DraftKings is giving Slovakia next to no chance of beating the U.S.

USA -650
Slovakia +425

I'm not sure who's calculating the odds but...
I'm not sure of those odds.

Canada/Germany is not even on the boards.

People freaking out about Hutson make me laugh lol I’ve been watching the WJC for over 2 decades now and it’s always the same thing.
People think performance here translate into the NHL. Some NHL stars today had very poor WJC and some “future stars” based on WJC turned out to be busts. Everyone calm down lol

Also I’d add that it became meaningless blowout game. Accumulated free points don’t mean anything & everyone took their foot off the gas defensively. Just human nature.
I wanna see what he does in competitive games vs the stronger competition and so far he’s 1/1 (vs Canada). No one cares about performances in blowout games vs clearly weaker competition in a JUNIOR tournament.
Problem is that his size, weight, and play style dont really translate to the NHL. Playing so badly against his own age group doesn't bring much confidence in him being able to play against grown men who will try to hit him. Quinn Hughes he is not.

I never realized how effective social media was in boosting young athletes playing careers than with Lane Hutson. Kid can play like absolute trash but he gets a pass and they will fight you to the death online. Must be a lot of 5'8" guys who couldnt make NCAA and/or Juniors posting because they seem to love the little fellar with a passion and fury that is rare to see.

Is this the most talented U-20 USA team in the last let's say 10 years? I will be surprised if they don't win it.
I love how this gets thrown around so much but somehow the kids dont have the IQ or ability to adapt enough to make the right play in their own zone.

If they have so much talent, then what are they lacking to make so many piss poor plays? To me a talented player is not just a guy who has been doing nothing but skill work for the last 10 years. Talent can be IQ, adapting your play style, making the right play in every situation. "Talent" can be viewed in other ways.

Pavel must be the worst "scout" I have ever seen on these forums. He posts a lot so maybe he stands out a bit but I mean some of his takes are the worst I've heard.

And it's not like he's actually scouting and finding gems in the rough out there. He literally just posts about kids who chase all the hype and everyone already knows.

It’s funny that you bring him up. Did you watch the WJC in
2019? Hughes wasn’t great either on either side of the ice (2 assists only, after 3 assists only in the 2018 WJC) and there were some rumblings by ignorant fans like you that he may be too small for the NHL lol
People put wayyyy too much weight on this tournament, yet history has proven that to be very wrong.
See you in a couple of years when you’ll likely be eating crow. Not saying it’s a guarantee but a very likely possibility.

He was named player of the game for Team USA…
Jesus Christ, you are literally one of the most clueless posters I’ve ever encountered on this site, hands down. I’m not saying this to be mean lol

I understand this is beating a dead horse but why in ever loving hell is there a chipotle ad on our national jersey nevermind the players f***ing forehead???

What a disgrace

If you want, we can compare our history. I suspect I have a much better one than you do.

Will never understand how some people on a message board spend their time trashing other people. Do you have nothing better to do than trash some stranger you've never met?

But I'll just stop reading your posts and wasting my time. Responding to you once is enough. I suspect this started by someone else obsessed with me who trashed me. The good thing is this website allows me to not have to deal with those of you who are like this.

Pavel's a good guy and a terrific poster.

Is it worth losing?
I think losing on purpose is almost always a bad idea. I understand it, but you gotta play every game to win. I don’t necessarily believe in karma but I’d rather not f*** with it.

I agree. It's a terrible mindset, especially in a short tournament, and one you don't want to mess with.

This is completely wrong in every way. Just impossibly wrong. Wow.

Go on the prospect board and you can see all the threads he starts about unheralded prospects well before their draft. He’s passionate about prospects, particularly ones he likes, and he definitely doesn’t care about “hype”. And certainly watches games with prospects, particularly the USNDP.

You can disagree with some his takes, I do, but don’t hallucinate a straw man.

Like Stramel “turning a corner” and then being left off the scoresheet upon returning from Christmas break?
