WJC: 2024 Team USA Roster Talk

Sure but the summer tournament makes the decline worse as it didn't affect his BC season at all.
He was focusing on the upcoming season, idk his default conditioning routine or what not and how playing in the thing would have interfered, but I can't really blame him (I guess by my flair, I'm also naturally biased in his favor), he prioritized his last year of college hockey before turning pro over an asterisk summer world juniors, it's a personal preference. He's done his time for USA Hockey (as recall he had just gone to the Olympics a couple months prior, while the other 02s that were at Olympics that didn't play in WJC had turned Pro, I think it did show it wasn't as big of an event as normal years)

So then Minnesota has the worst scouting staff ever that they picked a player who can’t play top 9 for Wisconsin? Why weren’t those players picked higher? NHL GM’s dumb?

This is the same type of argument you’re making that if it was as you said the results of the draft would align as you suggest.

It’s not as simple as that. Decisions often aren’t the right one. We don’t have to bow down to the coach or a GM. We can form our own opinions.
Or they have a decent one and just made a terrible pick.

Also, there are rumblings that this was a "GM pick" and not necessarily the scouts.

Can we get back to Pavel's bad take posts like Hughes won't be a center in the NHL??

Lol...I kid I kid...well, not really. I was very high on Turcotte as well, not Hughes high but wish Hawks took him over Dach high...so we all make bad calls. No biggie..
I'm the king of bad takes, but sometimes you gotta learn to cut your losses. Blaming Wisconsin for Stramel not being Adam Fantilli is a bit Fansilly.

Any guesses on final cuts?

I’ve got:
1) One of Finley or Hayes
2) One of Whitelaw or Terrance
3) One of Geary or Livanavage
4) Minnitian

I'm really interested to see Minnetian at camp. For the beginning of BC's season, it felt like they were pushing fundamentals extremely hard with him which he needed. It was all about gap, blocking shots, body positioning and first passes. You'd see flashes of the skating and offensive stuff for sure but you could tell the fundamentals were being drilled into him and he did a really solid job with it. The past month, it's felt like they gave him the GO button. He's been a force the past month, especially the past 2-3 weekends. It feels like everything is really starting to click for him. I'm really interested to see who he is in camp

Anyone who watched him the past 2 years with the NTDP, you could always see the talent there but it always felt really jumbled. He wasn't a Hutson type with the vision but he had a lot of good offensive instincts. The defense was going to take a bit being a forward for so long but I never felt like there were big strides taking place there. It's felt like he's taken a leap this past month and things are really clicking. It's been fun to watch regardless of whether he makes the team, he's had a great year just getting an invite

Yeah, I think Minnetian was the best of the 2005 NTDP defensemen that was eligible for the 2023 draft, but there’s a lot of RHD depth. There’s not space for another 5’11 defensemen, especially on the right side. Next year I think he’ll make it.

Whenever you get excited to look at old World Juniors statistics, it makes you feel old. With many names, it feels like yesterday that they played in WJC and now they are veterans of many years in the NHL.
So true, the 2016 tournament feels like it was only about 4 years ago. One thing that I always remind myself during this tournament is to enjoy every game in the moment. I feel like the 26th and 27th go by nice and slow because we're getting our feet wet with every team out the gate. But then once you hit that third day of the WJC, in the blink of an eye you're at the QF (The last 4 days of the round robin go by so quick).

Enjoy the holiday hockey fellow US fans!

I was at the 2016 tournament watching Matthews dominate, and it still feels like yesterday. Matthews already has 315 NHL goals lol.

I eagerly look forward to the WJC every year. We get treated to some of the most compelling games and dramatic finishes of the entire hockey season.

It's a shame that more American hockey fans aren't on board. No idea how to fix that, or if it's even possible. It's difficult to compete with the biggest bowl games and NFL games with playoff significance occurring at the same time.

Get it off NHL Network and onto a channel that everyone gets. Make streaming games easier too. My Canadian neighbor who has cable has to come over to my house to watch games.

USAH geniuses snub Stramel and then he has 3 assists the next game.

“But he never was good anyway”

Sure.
