I taped the Swiss game and watched it last night. I only watched the first 2 periods. I thought Canada looked good. Very good. Yes, they were SLOPPY and they had no chemistry, but the talent is there. Calebrini was the best player - until he was given the boot.

I am taping today's game - I need to swim. Enjoy boys and don't be too hard on the kids.
We will go easy on them just for you OF.

I fail to see why you would change who your starter is because of a shaky first game. Get him right back in the net against a way better team and see what happens? What exactly is the downside?

The downside is we're not getting a proper look at the other two goalies who could be playing better right now.

It's not like Rousseau is some Devon Levi or MAF esque unquestioned starter. The role were up in the air going into camp and I don't get why he's been given such a long leash.

They were good and I thought most of the the team has chemistry as well but you can tell a few guys had problems adjusting to the European ice. Lots of individual mistakes. And Rousseau was very poor. He was lucky that his counterpart Beglieri let in soft ones as well. Not that it matters in exhibitions but the soft goals Rousseau allowed would have cost Canada the win if they played a better team or maybe even just Switzerland with Huet in goal.

Unfortunately, I don't think Canada's other goalies are any better. I'm not worried about the skaters, I'm worried about the goalies. From a neutral Swiss point of view, I think Canada would have had better goalies available.

I was surprised Canada did not score in the 3rd - but, again, I didn't watch the 3rd period.

As for the goalies... I don't know what to say. It's been a problem for so long it's just... expected.

You also don't lose the tournament before it starts lol if Rousseau shits the bed in the tournament they can make a change....and still win the tournament.

okay and you have less info to make that decision when Rousseau has gotten the vast majority of all exhibition minutes

what would have been the downside to seeing St. Hillaire/Ratzlaff today?

Everyone needs to remember, we are NOT missing the playoffs - we'll finish in the top 4, and the Crossover will not be tough - the other pool is weak, so, as long as we don't face the U.S. in the quarters, we need 2 strong games for Gold. That is certainly doable for this group.

I think it was a combination of Canada sitting back a little more defending the lead and Switzerland changing goalies. Not that Grüter would be a lot better than Beglieri and he was lucky at times. Canada might as well could have scored in the 3rd as well but Grüter is a righty goalie and many Canadians didn't seem to be able to adjust to the new look on the fly.

To stop talking about goaltending for a sec, Cowan has looked great on the top line. Made two fantastic passes to Poitras for HD chances in one shift. Got chippy with some American defenseman with plenty of slashes both ways, love his feistiness.

Still think Celebrini comes back to the top 6 at some point soon but Cowan is making his case to stay there.

Good analysis. :thumbu:

I am off. Swimming calls. :)

Why are they using Rousseau in all of their pre games, it looks like they've already picked him as their goalie and the other guys have no shot, can't say I'm sold on him.

Yeah I don't hearing that especially since word around camp was Ratzlaff looked like the better goalie. They gave Ben Gaudreau more of a chance to taking the 1G role than they have to Ratzlaff and St-Hilaire with Gaudreau putting up some not so great numbers last season pre-tournament.

Agreed.

According to the TSN broadcast, the plan was to play both Ratzlaff/St. Hillaire today. Makes sense. But Rousseau went to the staff and said he needed more time to get sharp and wanted to play. And they said yes...

I really don't get why they're catering to a player like that. I don't get why he's been anointed as the starter and they don't seem to be giving the other guys a fair shot to compete for the job. Undrafted goalie with zero international experience, what has he done to deserve this much deference? And imagine you're Ratzlaff, scheduled to finally play, and your teammate basically benches you on his request? Wtf.

Well yeah Ratzlaff isn't going to get in but St Hilaire will. If we need to get to our #3 in a short tournament we are probably f***ed anyway.
They’re saving the trouble and starting with their #3

And then he sucks. Again.
