It’s clearly a good team, it just doesn’t appear to be a great one… on paper, at least. Let’s let them play some games before we dump all over them. There are clearly some real game-breakers in this lineup.
:thumbu:

Surprised geekie and Savoie haven’t just immediately been put together but I guess there is time for that

They don't fit super well, not sure what you were expecting. Even on the same junior team, they haven't played that much together outside the PP. Geekie can't skate with Savoie... so if they want to use Geekie in the middle (they should not imo) - it's not going to be Savoie on his wing - Celebrini would be a better C for Savoie.

Won't get my hopes up, but better than being told no chance.

Benson in or out will decide if we have a good shot at this or not. Without him, Celebrini and Savoie should be the offensive engine, with him suddenly you have 3 core players and you make Yager much better.

Look at the previous 2 years...

It's no surprise that 2 x19 years old players drafted in the first round of the NHL play together in the CHL. It doesn't mean they fit...they are just much better than anyone else. It doesn't mean they have chemistry. Suddenly at the WJC you have to find them both much better pairings. And at WJC level, I don't think Geekie is a center.

Yup, the few times I'd seen the Ice play prior to moving to Wenatchee, Savoie and Geekie centered their own lines unless they were on the powerplay. Savoie usually had Benson on his wing.
My preference would be to have Celebrini and Savoie or Yager center their own lines in the top 6 and use Geekie and Danielson as the bottom 6 centers. Lots of good center options for this squad so it'll be interesting to see who they select and how they're gonna be used.

I share his concerns, it is not a great team compared to what we usually bring and relative to what the u.s and the swedes are bringing this year. I am a little leery of relying on young players like celebrini and small guys who arent great skaters from the Q like dumais who may light up that league but could find themselves struggling here, sort of this years mike ribeiro. Still, you are right, we need to see them play a few games first, if they get the p.p and p.k oiled you never know as its such a special teams game at this tournament. With this edition of Team Canada though I think we will know within 2 games whether they have any chance of winning at all or if they are just in over their head in terms of thinking gold.

Feels like that kind of team to me.
Finally someone writes what determines a short tournament success. Special teams and timely goaltending.

Why do I have a weird feeling a guy like Savoie isn’t a sure fire lock at the moment for Hockey Canada…

On “X” the name Buchinger seems to be coming up a lot, must be looking good.

Dumais getting a lot of special teams looks.

Owen Beck sounds to be the key penalty killing center for us.

I like that they jumped straight to playing Celebrini/Dumais together right away because for some reason I feel that chemistry is going to be sick during the tournament in Sweden, hoping that doesn’t backfire.

I read on Instagram, that Scott Wheeler said that Tristan Luneau, Maveric Lamoureux, Jake Furlong Matt Savoie, Jordan Dumais, Macklin Celebrini and Mathis Rousseau stayed on the ice after the second group, working on drills. Wheeler said this probably indicates all of these guys are likely to make the team. A bit surprised about Furlong. The rest of the players aren't really surprising. Hopefully Hockey Canada knows what they're doing with Furlong

I don’t find Furlong overly shocking if he makes Canada, but I do see some inconsistencies in his game, he has a high confidence level and is well composed, sometimes he pinches and falls behind in play. However he does have great leadership capabilities he’s the captain of the Halifax Mooseheads. Jake Furlong does have a solid track record as a playoff performer which might be why he’s getting a good look. But he also only has 1 goal on the year and 13 in his career in the Q. Maybe they don’t want that scoring and would rather him play less of a two-way role then he’s used too and leave it to Luneau and Mateychuk, maybe Bonk too.

I think Canada could have it right, I think he would work perfect with QMJHL counterpart Maveric Lamoureux on his right.

I like Ty Nelson personally not just because of stats but because he’s a big hard hitting defencemen and can frustrate. By the looks of line formations he seems like the odd man out right now. Which is odd to me.

Well I hope Celebrini and Mateychuk pack their carry pants to Sweden.

Going to need guys like Luneau, Yager, Cowan, and Danielson to have good tournaments. I've doubted the Canadian goaltending for years at this competition but they seem to always do enough.

4 lines hard on the puck, the way we will have to roll. Goaltending is anyones guess but I think that goes for all the teams this year.

Interesting that the only returning player from last year isn't part of the "locks."
