WJC: 2024 Team Canada Roster Talk - Part 1

He was never the go to guy on the team that’s why. Bedard, Stankoven, Roy, Zellweger, even Guenther were more impactful than wright ever was last years tournament. I never went into a game expecting Wright to be THE guy, that’s what I think he’s got to prove. Hayton did it, Strome did it, McTavish did it, Wright should too

None of those guys you mentioned had accomplished what Wright had at the world junior level by the time they returned for their age 19 year though. Hayton was incredible in his age 19 year, yes, but Strome was a seriously overrated prospect (evident to anyone who watched him play with Erie) and finished the 2017 tournament as essentially a third liner (Cirelli/Stephens and PLD/Roy played more and played better than him in the gold medal game against the U.S.). McTavish has always been just a straight up more impactful player than Wright.

I get wanting him to come back and be The Man on this years team, I really do. The pressure on him would be pretty intense to repeat gold as captain but our chances to do so would obviously be higher with him there. Just think with him turning 20 before the tournament finishes and with him bouncing around so much over the past few years (Kingston, Seattle, Coachella, Halifax, Windsor, Coachella, Seattle) it’s got to be on Seattle’s mind to just let him play hockey.

Damn straight, And proving to be The Guy would be a much greater developmental tool than whatever collection of NHL/AHL games he can get in from Dec.15 to Jan 5.

Why? Why does it matter? He’ll be for all intents and purposes a 20 year old (likely the oldest player in the tournament) playing against teenagers.

give it up. He is an 04 birth year, is 19 years old, and would be playing in a tournament for 19-year-old players. He turns 20 the day of the GMG. And somebody has to be the oldest player in the tournament. saying that like it means something is just silly.

It’s a hockey discussion board and everything has been civil so far. I disagree with the position that Wright would be better off playing in yet another world junior tournament against teenagers as compared to spending those two weeks playing against or practicing with men. I explained my reasoning above. I don’t think he has anything left to prove at this level and that’s my opinion. Agree to disagree I guess.

I'm not sure where he would be better off I'd just like to see him there to help us compete,

He'd be better off at the World Juniors. and then spend the rest of the year in the AHL. maybe even a shot at the World Hockey Championship in May to close out the season.

Neither I, nor anyone would disagree with that as he’d be our best and most impactful player, and likely the best player in the tournament as well. Canada’s chances at gold are higher with Wright than without.

Just to be clear the expectations would be very high.

The question is what Seattle has planned for him for that time period and my opinion is that there’s a 25% chance of Seattle releasing him. That’s for them to decide of course. Everyone has their own opinion as to what’s best for Wright’s development. I’m trying to look at it from Seattle’s perspective and not that of a Canadian hockey fan.

I’ll leave it at that as I’ve said enough on this topic.

Honestly, I don't think he will be attending this year.

Why should he have been? Hayton and Strome weren’t in their D+1 only D+2. Mctavish was pretty much D+2 when he was the guy.

He still made the year previously, despite it being cancelled. Should’ve have been more advanced

Regardless, this conversation is going nowhere. We disagree on our standards
