I commend Evans for being a 207th overall pick to carving out an NHL career. That is amazing but Habs need better players.
I don't get the love for Evans.
Lets talk about a purported specialist with a 52% FO record who is our prime center on what is arguably the worst PK in the entire league.
Let's talk about his unwillingness to embrace a fourth line role and how he pouted for most of the season he did spend there.
A guy who can't play the boards doesn't go to the net can't break a check and won't help your team with any significant zone time.
He also doesn't block shots or fill lanes very well. But sure let's go ahead and give him a new contract.
He's not nearly good enough for our top three lines and he's certainly not an ideal fourth line player.
Both Damphousse and Carbonneau are very clear about our 3C and 4C being too weak.
I tend to agree with them we have to do much better than that.
If Beck and Flojack play like I expect they can this season say goodbye to Jake Evans by next year.

His level of play might be acceptable if we compare to bad contracts who are real anchors for gms, he's almost money-wise the Evans. But thing is : resigning him with a raise, look at this, he might decline, get injured more often and produce less for more money. In 3 years he could become an anchor a la Dvorak. We had players who declined with their play so often.

You're not going to find many better 4Cs in the league.
Maybe two years he could be fine but we will regret the third one. He's already with us next year, the year after I guess Beck will be ready. So no need realy for resigning Evans. A third or 4th center is impossible to find today? I can't beleive it. Maybe hard but not impossible. One year to find his replacement.

Anytime people start complaining about Evans you know it's a slow news day.
People complain about Evans the odd months between the 10th and the 17th. Evans score on tuesdays and fridays between the 24th to the 28th of each month when we have to park our car on the right side of the street if we don't want to get a parking ticket in Montreal. Evans score or have a great night when the Moon, the 5th asteroid of Jupiter and Uranus are aligned. And he score also the nights when Aunt Sally wins at Scrabble.

If the money is good, I'd be happy if they re-signed Evans.

You're pretty alone with your opinion on Evans.
Alone on this board on this night, yeah but I don't care. Evans is nothing to be happy about. I wont lose sleep because of him. I accept we'll suck for few years now and worst case he's signed 3 years. In 2 years we'll complain he remove ice time to a new player to developp.

The proposed deal also included Mesar.
Yeah was just clarifying the other 2 pieces, I’m not going to throw in the towel on Mesar but I like Rutgers size and upside more, I can’t see any of the 3 pieces we give up being core pieces we don’t already have depth at

If the habs had offered Mesar + 1st + Barron/Harris, the jets would have easily accepted.
I don’t see Harris and Barron with the same value, one has much higher upside even if he hasn’t shown it yet but Harris doesn’t move the needle for me especially with all the LD we have.

If we had a 14th OA pick with size that is developing great would we deal it for a late 1st pick that hasn’t done great, a probably late 1st round pick in the Panthers pick and a 3rd pairing D that skates well but isn’t physical and is average at best at offense. I wouldn’t

On our board Mesar is looking to be about our 12th ranked prospect, Rutger is probably the Jets 1st

McGroarthy requested a trade. They won't get fair value back.

We traded 26th + late 2nd + 7th to move up to 21st.

The panthers pick can be assumed to be around 26th. Panthers 1st + Mesar + Harris/Barron could probably get you to 15th overall.

The 15th pick is solid value for a player who was drafted 14th overall and who requested a trade.

I also doubt the habs would include the panthers 1st round pick in a trade since it could be the flames 1st round pick instead, and if that's the case, then we're talking about a teens pick.

I have to agree. An established D - Harris alone is worth an unestablished F - McGroarty & a potentially established RD - Barron ups the ante & we also throw in a 1st? Winnipeg easily accepts! Especially since they need D depth. It's the value of that first & the character of McGroarty that worries me. DNT!

Not the point, Evans could easily be important for the contention window, he's not blocking Beck who we shouldn't even think about making a place for yet. Just move Evans to the wing if necessary.

You're not going to find many better 4Cs in the league.
Based on what stats?
The stats he put up as a 4th line center were kind of anemic.
He had like 4 pts in 25 games up and until Moneyhands went down.
He finished up the season with 19 pts despite being bumped in mid December.
We can do better.
Alex Belzile put up 14pts in 31 games as a 4th line center.

To me the McGroarty situation smells of a 3 way deal, a team with the assets Winnipeg wants, and a team he wants to go to that is willing to meet his demands, that has a player or pick the team giving up the assets wants.

A 4th line center is not there to put up points - and he still does that at a pretty solid rate, he averages nearly 30 pts a season. Again, he was a big part of our PK as it started to level back up during the year and he has had 52% faceoff rate in the last two seasons.

He's got speed. He's good at faceoffs. He's a good penalty killer. He is efficient from a cost perspective. He's a good teammate and he has enough offense to chip in.

What are you expectations for a 4C because I really challenge people to look around the league and see what is out there. People aren't stashing superstars down there.
