Congratulations to MLS and the Whitecaps for causing me to actively choose to avoid this game even though I traveled to a game in Van and was prepared to offer them more support.
You understand the Whitecaps have no say in this, right? The league took this deal (and they own every club) and imposed it on every one because they got a bunch of money from Apple. There is no sense criticizing the team for it.

Don't know why MLS doesn't make this playoff the same as they do in Europe.....a two game series, where home and away goals often decide the result. If that were the case, the Whitecaps would be moving on after tonight's 3-0 bleaching of LAFC.
They used to. Everyone hates it. Even FIFA abandoned it for the most part. It governs how teams play too much. The best-of-3 is an MLS experiment for this round to make sure every team hosts one playoff game. From next round onward it is single-game knockout.

Was at the game.

Great start led to a great atmosphere. Tailed off for abit especially when LA were pushing hard to start the 2nd half but the 3rd goal killed.

Place was rocking (literally) and great to see.

Fingers crossed they can win in LA and move on.

I'm glad to hear this, because on the Apple TV feed BC Place always sounds near-silent, even when you can see movement in the crowd. So I wondered how much of it is tepid fan support vs. the placement of microphones and/or acoustics. I do think it is both, though, having attended games in places like Salt Lake City and Minnesota (as well as one game in Vancouver). BC Place will never really be able to replicate the atmosphere, even with a lot of fans.

Also a big difference is that the MLS playoffs are based on league standings so a home and home series would essentially render the regular season meaningless (although I think LigaMX accounts for this somewhat by if the series is tied after both legs the higher seed wins).

The Apple deal is easy big money but it leads to things like the single biggest upset in league history (every bit as comparable to CBJ over TB IN 2019) being pretty much ignored like it never happened.

Needed to get a goal in the first half with the amount of possession and chances they had but couldn’t break through and one mistake costs them.

Too bad......they actually outscored LAFC 4-3 over three games......but no finish in the end. So another wildly erratic Caps seasons comes to an end.

Don't really follow the team or MLS closely enough to know if major changes are in the offing.......but suspect that as a 'small-market' MLS team, probably not a lot of major moves or signings.

Oh. Season's over? I honestly wasn't sure what was going on with the Whitecaps until I read the last few posts in this thread.

Kudos for good effort against a probable champion. Overall a good season. Gauld should get more recognition in Vancouver than he does.

I'm curious about Ryan Gauld. I believe he's currently listed as a player for Scotland's World Cup squad.

But I also read somewhere that after 2026, he could apply to join Canada's World Cup squad. Is this actually true? And if so, is he someone that Jesse Marsh could use and would he strengthen the Canadian team?

His recent call up to the Scotland national team and subsequent games played have closed the door on the possibility of Gauld playing for Canada.

He would have fit a Jesse Marsch squad like a glove.

Considering what they have, pretty good season overall. Time for Ahmed to get to Europe and grow.

Time for Boehmer to take the top job or move on as well.

The late season swoon was the beginning of the end.

Hopefully they pony up to get a manager of relevance but I doubt it.

Perhaps the most likeable manager in Whitecaps MLS history. Just a class act and always seemed to inspire his players. He was basically an interim that inherited a crappy situation and somehow made the most of it.

Unfortunately he should have never been a long-term manager for an MLS club and was only kept around because he was probably paid peanuts.

This would echo my feelings.

I'm going to miss Vanni. His interviews on Global Sports were almost 'must listen'.

But in the end, he was saddled with a 'middling MLS roster' at best. And that explains their erratic record. Whenever players went down with injury or were called away for international duty, the team just slumped. Absolutely zero depth.

So it's next man up. But unless the Caps owners loosen the purse-strings a lot, it'll be more of the same.
