I meant to have this up earlier tonight but it turned out that making/eating/cleaning up dinner took longer than anticipated.
In honor of the world series starting yesterday and because I haven't done one of these in a while, I'm embarking on a slightly more ambitious multi-day version of hte vintage baseball radio posts that I did before. This time to present something timely:
A Yankees-Dodgers World Series. From
1956
This was, of course, the
Brooklyn Dodgers against the Yankees and I believe it was the 7th of their now 12 clashes in the World Series. Why did I pick this series? Well, besides just having the two current WS teams and a heck of a lot of notable players, there's also some history to be had in this series. But we'll get to that a little later on.
Unfortunately it does not appear that game 2 audio is available anywhere, but I do have links to the rest of the series with every or almost every game in full.
Game 1 took place at Ebbetts Field in Brooklyn on Wednesday, October 3rd, 1956 and featured the following lineups:
Yankess
1) Hank Bauer (RF)
2) Enos Slaughter (LF)*
3) Mickey Mantle (CF)*
4) Yogi Berra (C)*
5) Bill Skowron (1B)
6) Gil McDougald (SS)
7) Billy Martin (2B)
8) Andy Carey (3B)
9) Whitey Ford (SP)*
Dodgers

2) Pee Wee Reese (SS)*
3) Duke Snider (CF)*
4) Jackie Robinson (3B) *
5) Gil Hodges (1B)*
6) Carl Furillo (RF)
7) Roy Campanella (C)*
8) Sandy Amoros (LF)
9) Sal Maglie (SP)
*Denotes an eventual Baseball Hall of Fame member. Sandy Koufax was also on the Brooklyn roster but did not pitch in the series, and Don Drysdale will appear in a later game in the series
