Actually hold on I found it.

“I think I have a pretty well-rounded game, it just gets overlooked because of how much I score. It’s almost one of those things where the scoring rates work against you (…) And my 200-foot game from last year has gotten really good. My coaches are saying that it’s definitely not a problem anymore and it’s perfect.”

"it's perfect" is a very scary mindset.

The conversation between Coach Fohr and Eiserman comes off like a parent trying to use reason to keep their kid from having a temper tantrum meltdown in aisle 9. The way he explains it is like he's explaining it to an 8 year old.

Oof. Scary given how far he has to go.

Anyway, I think there’s very little chance we pick a winger, unless we win 2nd overall and take Demidov. Even then, not sure we’d pick him due to non-hockey reasons.

Maybe in the unlikely event(s) that we get passed by both Ottawa and Montreal in the draft order and/or a team or two wins the lottery from behind us, with even worse odds than us. Even then, I think there’s a solid shot we like Iginla better than Eiserman.

All that’s to say, I think winger selection odds are very, very low. So I’m not going to get too spun up about Cole Eiserman.

Thinking about the six NCAA D that have been drafted top 15 over the last 15 years, the closest thing to a bust was Jamie Oleksiak. And he’s really not even close to a bust. He’s played an average of 18min per game for nearly 600 NHL games now and he’s still a valuable contributor in Seattle, playing nearly 20mins per game this season and leading the way in blocked shots and behind only Borgen in hits.

The other five are Hughes (Norris caliber), McAvoy (near Norris caliber, perennial All Star Quality), Hanifin (1st pair quality), Werenski (1st pair quality) and Owen Power (as much potential as anyone on the list).

Simply by playing in D1 as a draft eligible freshman and playing well enough to be considered for the first half of the first round, a player has to be so dang solid that they just flat out do not miss. Just being in this company is such rarified air. But to be right at the very top of this pile in terms of production and impact on a top program (both still in the tourney) is incredible.

I think Buium and Levshunov both have resumes typical of top three picks in almost any draft. Only hitch in the giddyup is that Celebrini, Demidov, Lindstrom, Silayev, Dickinson, Parekh, and Yakemchuk do too.

I genuinely don't know how you can see his coaches saying "yeah, his play away from the puck is improving and and he's quite capable of playing a complete game" and then bash the guy for saying his coaches are telling him his 200ft game is fine. It's literally in the article. Also don't know how you can say he's disinterested when literally everyone who talks about him says the opposite.

But anyways.

Levshunov is 50% greater than the he average draft eligible top 15 pick NCAA D and Buium is twice as high as average. Making them top two in that span.

Yakemchuk is 30% over the average for the WHL. Number one in the sample.

Scoring is up. Not like that. Fifteen years is a large sample. I’m sure there have been up and down years in that time.
Wasn’t sure if there was a site where you could run them if possible. Either way those #’s are very impressive. To account for almost a 3rd of your teams offense on the back end sounds elite to me. Regardless if team scoring is up. Seems like college hockey as a whole has been producing more top end talent.

I just use elite prospects and the calculator app on my phone. Lol.

Lo-Tech, high effort, caveman stuff. Haha.

He doesn't say fine, or better. He says perfect.

Disinterested isn't from the article, it's from watching his play. I've only seen a shift by shift and some from world juniors so it's hardly comprehensive, but from what I've seen that's exactly how I'd describe his play outside of the offensive zone.

I'm fine agreeing to disagree on this, you seem very passionate about the prospect, I hope he does well. I also hope we don't take him. Like rt said above though I doubt it happens because of how stacked this draft is with dmen. It'll be interesting to follow his career wherever he goes.

I've watched most of his games. Both at the WJC and in the USHL. He plays slower because he conserves his energy and he's adept at reading rebounds and scoring goals off of them by coming in late. It has nothing to do with him being disinterested. Off the puck he often cheats by staying longer in the O-zone hoping for a turnover that can put him in prime position to score, and that often works out for him. But even when it doesn't he's engaged in getting back and will cover pinches for his D, he does well at reading the play and knowing what he can get away with defensively. Those kinds of plays probably dry up in the NHL but then again Sidney Crosby has made a pretty good career out of it.

I doubt that BA will take him, I've already made peace with the fact we're not going to get who I really want (Eserman, Celebrini, Demidov) and will probably draft another D. I trust BA. He has yet to prove me wrong on the draft front.

But I also am pretty confident that the 3 forwards I want will be exceptional, top tier, elite talents.

I just think people shouldn't be shitting on a 17yo who won't turn 18 for another 5 months because of perceived issues with hockey bullshit like "passion". Every kid who's ever drafted wants to make the NHL, wants to be elite, dreams of lifting the cup, and is sacrificing their body to get there. Plus I just tend to believe his coaches and trainers over random people and clips on the internet.

I’m going to sit my boys down this week and show them Everett vs Vancouver so that I can show them Julius Miettinen and tell them to play exactly like that. Just always goes to the next. He’s always in the crease. Always battling for position in front of the net. One track mind. I love it. It’s so refreshing wonderful throwback. And sadly a unique anachronism. Happily, one that I think will serve Miettinen extremely well as his career progresses.

He’s got the size, skating and smarts to go with the brawn and battle. He wins his faceoffs, he goes inside, and he gets to the net. I love it.

Espn mock draft has Yotes picking Demidov.

It would be incredible to get Demidov. Sadly, don’t think that happens unless we win 2nd overall. Even then, it’s 50/50 based on his situation and the potential signability issues.

Holy hell thank you!!! I think posting links to pay walled articles but with no relevant snippets is kind of pointless. Those who have a subscription will have already read it (or why the hell do they have subscription?!) and those who don't have subscriptions can't read it anyway. So anyway...thanks for a proper post!

Lots of risk IMO picking another Russian. It would be franchise crippling if they don't get released for 2 or 3 or 4 years.

You mean if they keep on signing extensions? I think when they’re nhl ready they’ll come. The money is too good in the nhl to pass up or delay too long. They have to get the ELC out of the way regardless.
We really dont know what will happen with Russia and when/if players will be allowed to come to the NHL. It is a risk.

What do you mean by “allowed to” come? It’s up to the players if they want to sign an extension or not. They can come over whenever they don’t have a contract, which they have full control over.

The Russian government has openly discussed the need to "protect the Russian ice hockey players, coaches, and academies and put restrictions preventing young talents from leaving the country."
