For the CHL, I am still biased toward clubs that have an actual developmental track record. I don't love the idea of putting a player in the hands of the Hitmen. Seems an unnecessary risk when there are other comparable players available from more competent organizations (Parekh is right there, Dickinson too).

This is a good point and one I alluded to in the yalemchuk article but didn’t expand on much. He’s an older player and he’s already played three full seasons for the Hitmen. And yet he has still not fixed his wonky mechanics and he’s mentioned he only very recently started taking off ice training seriously.

If he was playing for the London Knights, I have to think they’d have fixed these things in him long before now. There’s a reason London is jokingly referred to as the 33rd NHL franchise. Calgary feels much more bare bones. I think you’re right to trust them less. If they haven’t fixed him yet can we expect them to next season? I think the answer is obviously no. It’s going to be fully on our development staff. And maybe that’s part of the appeal.

It could be they’ve already conducted video sessions and PowerPoints with full reports and project plans to Armstrong and the scouting staff and they’re all feeling like they’re getting a huge steal of a diamond in the rough. Who knows?

Just finished watching a bunch of tape on Trevor Connelly.
This kid is the real deal. He should be hearing his name near the top 10 more than he actually is. Only thing I can't believe is his weight. Works hard for a kid who's only 160lbs. Hands, vision and compete.

That’s true. But it’s also a range where everyone has flaws so you can pick your poison.
What's the flaw on Mr. Perfect? Haha.
I suppose it's that he doesn't shoot right handed.
He might also be taken before we get a chance.

And man oh man is he twig thin:

He’s not outside the top ten because teams aren’t buying the talent or because they’re worried about the build. It’s 100% off-ice character concerns.

After Mitchell Miller, I’m not sure I’d take Connelly in any round.

I’m still searching on him. ;)

I haven’t found anything. Haha.

Of all the low moments in Coyotes history the lowest was making the mistake of drafting Miller and then making it worse by renouncing the pick. This was the event that most underscored XG being unqualified and out of his element.

Connelly does not sound like a prospect who is worth the baggage. There is no big need for Utah to dip their toe into a picking a controversial prospect. There is other talent.

I mean Bobbys mid season has him at 11 which is one of the highest I've seen so we will see what GM's do vs scouts opinions.

He is a paper thin though, but so is Pettersson, so if the skill and compete is there then I can let it slide.

I also don't think his off ice issues are likely as bad as they are made to sound. Team USA letting him play for them still and the fact it hasn't been a major topic coming into the draft. He's kept his nose very clean since coming to the USHL over 2 years ago. Also made very public apologies for things he did under the age of 16 vs what Miller did. I'd 100% take a chance on him. So unless theres info that others know. I'd fully take advantage of other GM's making the mistake of passing on him.

Team USA did pick him. He was the only outsider on the team. And what did he do? Took a brain dead major penalty at the end of the game that allowed Canada to score multiple goals with him in the box. Huge comeback victory. Cost the team the game. I can’t imagine how awkward that would be. To be the one guy nobody knows and to blow the tournament.

I wouldn't call it brain dead. He was playing physical in the last 10 min. Kid went low and he ended up hitting him high, he didn't leave his feet or anything trying to kill the kid. He had a great game outside of one physical play. I'd rather have a player like that come playoffs personally. Willing to play physical in the big moments. Aside from that one play he only had 2 penalties the rest of the tournament.

i like Connelly the player but not at 6. I'd rather not deal with the aftermath especially when there are so many other players i love available at that slot. If he's there in the 2nd round I run up to take him.

Agreed, I'd honestly even package picks to move up for him around 25ish

This alone would be enough to hit the pause button...

Would need to hear the reasons. Honestly it's not unusual to shift hockey programs, especially under the age of 16.. could be parents or could be financials as well. Sometimes kids just go to see the program and find out if they like it, especially if they have options. Just him switching is not a giant red flag, especially when he ended up in a program closer to home in the end.

4 programs in 3 years. Katie Strang, who I don't respect, and Corey Pronman who I do, call this "an unusually vagabond career for a player with his talent". You state it is "not unusual". I don't factually know so, could you give me an example or two of a successful prospect who had a similar 4 amateur programs in 3 years kind of path?

But they aren't providing reasons. It's 100% suspicions. That was in the middle of covid too. And if you don't remember lots of programs were cancelled/delayed/pushed back those years. He might have been going wherever he could just to play for all I know. He never played in the one program so I'm guessing the 4 programs would be Anaheim, long beach, jersey and tri-city which is 4 teams in 3 seasons.
I know Roman Schmidt played a diff AAA program every year before going to the us program and then going back to the Ontario leagues. He was very highly touted going back before his rebel days. My brother switched programs 3 times in one year before going to the O. My buddy played 3 one year before getting his scholarship. You don't even have to take those as real examples. I'm just about to start work so I'm having to recite all off the top of my head

I'm just not going to hold those reasons (especially in that time frame) as a reason to hate on this kid. He seems to have been doing a great job trying to redeem himself from what I can tell. Just need to give me something real and or recent to think otherwise.

Thank you for your response...good stuff. Hate is harsh, you can not hate on him and still think he's not worth the negative pub. It is unfortunate that this is a selectively, judgmental, society and there are things they will forgive and things not so much. Playing around with Swastikas is one of those things that doesn't get much forgiveness regardless of the path taken to rehab, public, perception. It appears he is a lot more contrite and taken more steps than say Miller has but still... there is not much cause for Utah to take him at 6 when there is so much as good or better talent at that slot without the baggage and it is not likely he will be available at 38 when those mid or late first pickers are more apt to make the play and deal with the fall out. Tulsky just filled the last open GM job, Connelly's best hope was Marc Bergevin landing that gig. :)

SJ - Celebrini - This is obvious.

Chi - Levshunov - They've been courting him all season. They've got their 1C, now go get a 1RD.

Ana - Lindstrom - I think they really want a 1RD after trading Drysdale. They seem to like heavies, so no Parekh. Maybe too early for Yakemchuk. So they take the heavy F instead.

CBJ - Silayev - He's a future Provorov replacement and maybe partner for Jiricek. Silayev said that CBJ and UHC were the two teams that showed the most interest in him.

MTL - Demidov - The fans will be screaming for this pick to happen. Hughes drafted a couple Russians in later rounds last year. I think he'll be bold enough to give the fans what they want. Iginla would be a safe fallback.

UHC - Dickinson - Bill's first OHLer as GM? I guess so. Simashev , Dickinson , Moser will be a stacked LD corps for a long time. Szuber, Duda and Kipkie can apply for Stan Wilson's job when he retires. If Bill's ok with Yakemchuk's skating then I think he opts for the RD instead.

Lumbus is rumored to want Sennecke and now Laine wants out. I think that Sennecke makes sense for the Jackets.

MTL is rumored to be hot after Iginla. And Demidov is starting to feel like a faller.

1. SJS - Celebrini
2. CHI - Levshunov
3. ANA - Lindstrom
4. CBJ - Sennecke
5. MTL - Iginla
6. UTA - ???

If this is how it goes I think we're taking Parekh.
