The NFL is the most successful sports league in North America and rivals the best in the world (of which the rest are soccer and all free-for-all spend leagues where only 2-4 teams have a shot at the title any given year and it's the same every year).

The NFL just has a reverse finish draft order.

Arguably top 1-3 picks in the NFL are more important than the NHL because of the Quarterback position alone. Where the NFL draft is different is that there are starters all the way into the 3rd+ round.

I don't see why a reverse finish draft order wouldn't be the way to go. There's already enough dumb luck in the system.

I personally don't think tanking is a problem at all, and that's the thing. It's not just not a problem, but again, inherently necessary in a cap league.

That's a fair assessment. On the one hand, tanking does give me a reason to watch the sharks/care. On the other hand, it's entirely justifiable to root against them every single game. I'm definitely a "tank commander" i.e., I've been rooting against the sharks in every single game for multiple years at this point because, for every game, losing helps the sharks more than winning. I'm just saying that I wouldn't be this way if the lottery was flatter, and it might be a better fan experience

It's really hard to root against the Sharks. But, as you said, it's for the best right now.

In the scenario we finish last and win the lottery...our rebuild will be similar to Toronto lol.

2014 - Toronto drafts Swedish C/W 7th overall (Nylander)
2021 - San Jose drafts Swedish C/W 7th overall (Eklund)

2015 - Toronto drafts flashy F 4th overall in a year there is a generational 1OA (Marner)
2023 - San Jose drafts flashy F 4th overall in a year there is a generational 1OA (Smith)

2016 - Toronto finishes dead last and wins the lottery, securing a strong 1OA after McDavid (Matthews)
2024 - San Jose finishes dead last and wins the lottery, securing a strong 1OA after Bedard (Celebrini)

There's a gap year in 2022 for SJ but still funny.

Thanks for guaranteeing that we're just going to rise again to be playoff choke artists.

Another contender for that Pens pick.

I've been reading the PIT "what do we do with our first round pick" thread alongside a few other sharks lurkers, and I just want to say...

There are a lot of sharp posters over here on the sharks boards and I appreciate this little community. There are a few fans over there that definitely get it, but in general I'm just really impressed with the quality of a lot of posts over here. It's dark times for the franchise but there's a chance of a turnaround and it's a lot of fun to talk through it with y'all.

Could be a “survivorship bias” going on here too. We’ve been bad for so long now that it’s mainly the hardcore fans that post now. I’m sure if we get good again in the next couple of years, we’ll have newer, less knowledgeable posters as well. Which isn’t a bad thing, we were all new at one point.

Draft info dump while I wait for the BU game to start because I watched way too much junior hockey last night:

Zeev Buium was absolutely fabulous in his first NCAA playoff game last night. His puck management is so strong and I think there’s an argument that he has the best hockey IQ of all the top ranked defensemen in this draft. He doesn’t have outstanding physical tools like most of the others, but he’s just supremely effective and efficient. Good hands, good spacing, creative, and strong defensively as well. Denver is a total wagon so I do think his offensive point totals aren’t quite telling the story, as I’ve maintained all year, but there’s so much to like about this guy. I watched him a lot with the NTDP last season and didn’t quite see it then, but he’a come a long way. I am a little hung up on his 2005 birthdate and questioning the translatability of his offense, but he’s a real player.

Sam Dickinson was the same as always: calm, smooth, and not nearly as good defensively as the scouting reports say. You’d think from reading about him that he was a shutdown defenseman in juniors but every time I watch him there’s a few misplays in front of his net that stop me from being as high on him as some. His lack of pace, while not necessarily a deal-breaker for me, is one of the things I don’t care for with him. Plus he’s super passive for his size.

Parekh was solid, but I feel like I keep catching mediocre games whenever I watch him cause the guy from the highlight reels has never been there for me. His defense is really up and down—sometimes he makes one on one defensive plays that are actually quite good, and sometimes he makes the worst play imaginable. But his passing is so crisp and accurate that I actually don’t think his floor is as low as folks think.

Maybe this is a bold take, but Yakemchuk is the worst defensively among the six defensemen at the top of the draft, even worse than Parekh. He’s just so indifferent defensively and barely moves his feet when he doesn’t have the puck. In fact, he had back to back brutal defensive shifts and then came out and dropped this ridiculous move:

I can’t overstate how much this guy reminds me of Burns but a much worse skater and even more baffling and lazy defensive decision making. I think he’s the biggest boom-bust guy in this draft.

Celebrini, Levshunov, and BC in action today for NCAA playoffs, I’ll report back anything interesting.

Thanks for the report! Are you still team Levshunov if we don’t get Celebrini?

Agreed! I’ve loved reading these boards and have learned a ton from posters here. Plus, it keeps me away from social media which is a big benefit.

I am. #3 is where I become undecided. I would buy arguments for any of Lindstrom, Dickinson, Catton, and Demidov but wouldn’t be particularly happy with any of them. So naturally, we’re all but guaranteed to draft 3rd.
I know even Levshunov at #2 is something im not sold on. But the options 2-12 this year all sound the same to me and have their own warts. Happy I'm not a scout haha

Don’t get me wrong, Levshunov is a below average 2nd overall pick relative to recent 2nd overalls, but he’s differentiated himself from the pack to me.

Another thing to like about Lindstrom is while his production doesn't blow you away it is largely due to a lack of minutes and role on the PP.

His per 60 production is elite and his 5v5 per 60 production is top 5 in the WHL. I do think I'd take him 2nd/3rd if Demidov is off the table.

Moneypuck's model currently projects us to finish with 53.3 points compared to 53.1 for Chicago. Can't overstate how important tomorrow's game is.
While it would be nice, it’s really not the end of the world if we win.

At most, it costs us 10% in odds for #1OA, which really isn’t THAT much.

In regards to having a minimum of drafting #3OA vs #4OA, it really doesn’t matter as 2-6ish are all the same tier of prospect.

I’m more or less at the point to where I don’t care who they pick.

DWJR made a lot of picks we liked, they all turned out to suck.

Grier has made picks we didn’t like, and they’re doing good so far.

Regardless, it’s more likely that whoever we draft is a bust or bottom6/4 player than it is they’re a top of the lineup player.
