I made the mistake of looking at the latest Bleacher Nation mock draft

8. Montreal Canadiens — Carter Yakemchuk, D

6-3, 195
DOB:
Sept. 29, 2005
Shoots: Right
2023-24 Team: Calgary (WHL)

The Canadiens need help defensively. Yakemchuk is a really good defenseman coming out of the WHL. With his size and being a right-shot, the fit seems right. I would be surprised if the Habs don’t strongly consider one of the top defensemen in the draft here.

:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Another defenseman

Konsta Helenius with an assist today. What would be the best way for me to watch his full games? For those that do watch him more regularly is any part of his game elite ?
Illegal ways. AFAIK theres no legal ways since 2022 to watch Liiga.
We should ask real scouts, but I don't think this draft has it aside from Celibrini.

This draft looks pretty weak at times.
If a player had guaranteed Suzuki upside hed go first overall.

No this draft isnt weak, it is the expectations that are out of wack. Theres 0 to 4 players that are better than Suzuki in most drafts, this is gonna be the same.

I got the feeling they might keep the Winnipeg pick this time. The player drafted late 1st round would be quite a way from playing in the NHL and his arrival would coincide with the Habs prospect and young player pool being somewhat depleted

An influx of young players on cheap ELC deals is generally a major component of cup contenders depth wise and the guy taken here could fit nicely on a roster when the team would ideally compete for real

It depends on who is available, but if there isn't anyone, they'll use the pick. I don't think they'll force a Newhook/Dach just to keep the same MO.

You, or anyone else watch Sennecke ?

Just looking at the numbers, so stat watching, a very minor improvement points wise from last year doesn't instill confidence in him

Yeah, top 15 is likely too early. He might fall to late 1st or early 2nd because offensively he's about the same as last year. I like him as a player. He's a terrific forechecker with really soft hands for shooting or passing. He uses his reach to undress people and can be tough to contain along the wall.

His skating footwork is excellent, but he needs to work on his overall strength. His defensive play waivers from very good to I don't want to play defense right now. Lol

I don't think so, I think it's very apparent we need another offensive driver and Lindstrom isn't that.

The term "driver" is overused and difficult to prove.....I think he is very much their type of player although I am not entirely sold on him but I know far less than they do about Lindstrom.

Difficult to prove? Not sure what you are talking about. It's evident that the only real and consistent
play driver currently in the lineup is Suzuki; anyone would say that. Dach also has these qualities when healthy. Monahan did it part-time. Guhle could get there. We are all hoping Slaf will get there.

The problem with all these folks is that none have PPG+ talent. To me, Lindstrom looks more like someone who will be an accessory (see: Caufield) than a play driver in the NHL - but that could change in his prime. Demidov plays like a driver right now in the KHL, Celebrini wherever he goes - they have that PPG+ talent. I think this is the year where we use assets to go up in the draft to grab one of these 2; we can't get out of the rebuild without one.

+"their type" is much harder to prove vs. the play driver comment. What is their type? haha - even if you go back to the Rangers picks, Lafreniere, Kakko, etc. there is no common thread here.

Anyone got info on:

Yegor Surin - doing well in the MHL and seems to be a bit of a pest with his pims and has good size at 6'1

Trent Swick - last year of eligibility and seems to have taken a step forward offensively. He's 6'7, so might just be a late bloomer trying to coordinate that big body.

Jan Golicic - big dman playing in the Q

Kieran Walton - 6'5 close to a ppg.

Tyler McInnis-Thrope - another big forward who's in his 2nd year of eligibility.

Luke Ashton - size, playing in the BCHL, 2nd year of eligibility. Might be worth 1 of the 3 7ths ?

Adam Kleber - size, dman doing well in the USHL

Gabe Smith - 6'4 centre, low points, but improved from last year.

Tomas Lavoie - 6'4 RD from the Q, improved stats. Could be a target ?

Most of these players seem to be late 2nd, or later picks, so very possible targets to add to the pool..

Why is Demidov stuck down in MHL? Has there been any talk of loaning him to another KHL team? With the hype around him you would imagine he would be good enough to play in the big league.

Let's say we win a few spots in the lottery, and draft 5th....................and the Jets lose in the first round, and we get 20 ish...................do we actually keep them both?
I am thinking he is looking at trading one, or even both for proven a proven scorer, like Zegras, not neccesarily Zegras, but someone like that.................

My staff is high on Walton. With his combination of size, mobility and skills, they are predicting that he goes in the second round and if a team becomes seduced by Walton’s combination of physical assets and skills, he could even be taken at the bottom of the first round.

He looked impressive at the recent Prospects Game. So I agree that a second round selection is more than a mere possibility.

I think that is why I’m ignored

I would love Demidov or Lindstrom
I would sign up for that.

With the high pick, if Habs draft one of them, that would be fantastic for the forward group:

1 - Celebrini.
2 - Demidov.
3 - Lindstrom.
4 - Catton.
5 - Eiserman.
6 - Helenius.
7 - Iginla.

I will not be surprised that they have Iginla high on their list, he is that type of player that his game will translate perfectly at NHL level. He have great shot. Great hockey IQ aswell.

You take what the draft gives you and don't allow the immediate need to cloud your judgement.

The goal should be to build the best and deepest pool of talent possible. Once you get there, you are in position to make a trade for the gamebreaking player you need, without opening a major hole in your roster. Just like Vegas did with Eichel.
