That doesn't add up to me.
Stipe has all but been guaranteed the fight against Jones. Why would he give up a shot at the belt for a shot at the interim belt? One of the biggest names in the sport and widely considered the GOAT for someone most fans don't know. A fight against a 36 year old for a fight against a 30 year old. A fight against a blown up LHW who didn't have much KO power against smaller guys for someone who's knocking HWs out left and right?
Either Aspinall's making shit up to keep his name out there or the UFC told him that just to appease him and say "See? We tried."
If the UFC wanted a fight other than Jones-Stipe, all they have to do is say "Jones will fight the interim champ when he gets back." But they won't because a) that's the fight they want and/or b) they want Jones to fight and know/fear he'll walk away if he doesn't get Stipe.
Stipe and Aspinall have no leverage. The UFC and Jones are the ones with leverage.
UFC : Stipe, you're definitely getting the way higher profile, lower risk fight, but if you wanted to risk losing that fight by taking on this young killer who nobody really knows and is wrecking everybody we put in front of him, you can. Whaddayasay? What part doesn't add up to you? The follow-up explains it, if you saw that.
It would make sense the UFC would ask because they're either desperate for a UFC300 main event that fans would get excited about or they just wanted to have a backup option so they would have some leverage vs whoever else they are considering for that spot.
Everything Aspinall said makes sense, including the last part where he said Miocic turned it down. Because like you said, why would Miocic take that fight?
UFC : Stipe, you're definitely getting the way higher profile, lower risk fight, but if you wanted to risk losing that fight by taking on this young killer who nobody really knows and is wrecking everybody we put in front of him, you can. Whaddayasay?
Stipe : Pass.
UFC : Aw shucks. Sorry about that, Tom. He said 'no'.
Why even bother offering it to him? You know the answer already. The only way to get him to even consider it is by saying that Jones will fight the interim champ when he returns. But they've done the opposite. Everything from the UFC, Jones, and Stipe says they are going to fight.
Was wondering how many Bellator fighters would actually have interest in the tournament format so this is interesting news
No one particularly interesting from what I’ve seen so farThey let go a lot of the bellator roster despite them saying they were bringing everyone with them. A few of the local guys under contract with Bellator were released. I'm not surprised by it though.
Yeah their contracts were close to expiring within a couple months anyway so I wouldn't be shocked if they did that with a lot of people on the way out.No one particularly interesting from what I’ve seen so far
Am I missing something here? This is at most the 7th or 8th best fight on the card. Whatever star power Holm had is long gone and Harrison is not a groundbreaking signing. The Kayla signing helps 300 considerably. Even though she lost some of her draw with the Pacheco loss. Holm is also a name everyone knows. Kayla beats her, Nunes comes back, now we're talking.
It obviously isn't Ronda/Lesnar big, but 300 desperately needed something like this that people weren't expecting.
Shame the Aspinall-Miocic fight didn't materialize, but I can completely understand why Stipe wasn't interested.
Harrison is HUGE. I'm trying to picture here at 135 and... well, I can't.Definitely adds some juice back to the 135lb division.. if she can make that weight.
