The kid has 31 goals and 87 points in 61 games.
Quit being ridiculous. The question isn't whether he will produce at the NHL level, it's how much he will produce at the NHL level. And even a Ryan Ellis type 35-40 point D man is well worth the value in the 10-15 range.

Worst case, Parekh is a Shattenkirk/Ellis type. Best case; he's Karlsson. I roll those dice any day.
I don’t think my question was ridiculous. Are Shattenkirk and Ryan Ellis game breakers? I don’t see the ability to create from the point that game breaking defenseman have.

You are drafting a skill set. I also think I would put him over Konsta as a center in this draft move him upfront and use him on the point on the power play. Hear me out.

I’ve watched him play 10 to 15 games this year as Saginaw is fun to watch. You would almost need Silayev or Parayko Never crossing the red line to make up for his total lack of defense. It’s constantly odd man rushes the other way. If they have more talent than the other team, then it works just fine if it is a team like Sudbury, then they totally get smoked. I think he was like -4 that game.

However, the offense is undeniable. I think he could be 100 Point Center. He would be more than free to create and can float out to the point in the offensive zone. Remember, phil, Housley also played center early in his career. I think he has enough talent to make the transition and would be a damn good one.

Here is where I am at right now on my list today.
Celebrini
Lidstrom (highest upside)
Demidov (100 point player)
Dickinson
Parekh (as a center)
Buium
Catton (great player on crappy team)
Silyayev
Levshunov
Yakemchuk (He did shutdown the 16 year old machine...as erratic as he is)
Freij (willander equivalent more offensive)
Badinka (Reinbacher equivalent)
Pulkkainen-(stud late bloomer)
Iginla (consistent 30 goal guy great genes....but not a premium position may pass)
Boisvert (I think he will be a #2 center in this league for a long time)
Greentree (good player not a premium position)
Jiracek
Helenius (I think he flops)
Brandsegg-nygard (great 3rd liner)

guys to watch for later rounds:
Ozbej Rep RHD (later pick, excellent skater, slovenia, J20 sweden player)
Battaglia (plays on Kingston, Creative O good size)
Villenueve (plays on Sudbury. Gamer can really skate)
Traff (big winger, skilled plays fast physical)
Sjoqvist (defensive d, very mobile, simple shot blocker, (Carl II?))
Gill (good two way D)

Honestly, I think you guys are crazy for saying to pass on Parekh.

I know Krug has left a really sour taste in our mouths on the subject of offensive D men, but teams CAN afford to carry an offense-only D man provided they're actually productive.

Parekh has the offensive skills to be a legitimate game breaker offensively.
Load the rest of unit with strong D players and let Parekh play that game breaker role.

IF we miss out on the top 4 D prospects(Levshunov, Silayev, Dickinson, Buium); I say swing for the homerun.
Yeah, we need pure talent, simple as that. If Parekh hits, you are talking a Karlsson, a Hughes, a Fox, etc. type impact. If you can get someone that can legitimately be a ppg player from the backend, and even with sheltering, playing in the offensive zone the vast majority of the time because they are a great possession player, then it's a homerun. You run that pair for offensive 22+ minutes, and you hope the other pair can handle 22+ minutes of heavy defense.

I don't see this at all. His offensive skillset is tailored to using the space he gets at the point to find lanes and use his elite shot. He doesn't have the handling or strength to consistently beat defenders with dekes or maintain possession in tight spaces.

parekh has all the tools to be a stud offensive defenseman. i think you are too harsh on him for not playing defensive role that he isn't asked or expected to play. he is playing rover role in saginaw by design, much as mintuykov (sp?) played before him. they want their most talented players to have the puck in most dangerous areas of the ice. they spend far more time in o zone than d zone when he is on the ice. they don't want him grinding in corners and throwing his body in front of shots and acting like he is chris tanev. they want him to play like he is. nhl team can reign him in if they want, but he has a good stick defensively and given the level he is playing at, no reason to think that he can't adapt to pro game. i'm not saying he will be the next ek65 or cale makar or adam fox, but he has more offensive upside than any d in this draft.

That's his FLOOR.
Not his ceiling.

He's 2 points away from being the highest scoring OHL D man in the last 12 years.
It's fairly ridiculous to say that he isn't creating his own chances.

I'm projecting his skill set to the NHL. He creates some chances sure but mostly he is a player that takes advantage of space that is already there. I think it's possible he's a really high end NHL offensive D, but it will take a lot of development. I'd like to see him absorb contact better as that will be a critical skill in breakouts, but with his slight frame and upright skating posture I think more than likely he is always pretty easily outmuscled. I'd like to see him use more deception as a puck carrier. Right now it seems like he just takes the space he's given, and maybe will beat someone wide with superior skating. You need to have a more diverse skillset than that to really create offense from the point in the NHL and even be effective through the NZ.

How does he hold up against a forecheck? Right now I think the only players on our roster that can consistently beat a forecheck on their own are Leddy and Peru....and even then Peru gets caught sometimes since he's not the best skater. To me that's one of the biggest issues facing this team going into next year - finding a way to get better on D for sure, but a big part of that is having Dmen that can actually beat a forecheck.

What makes you put Yakemchuk at 31? Skating concerns?

skating and defense and compete and... he has the size and production to be a top 10 pick, but every time i watch him i am unimpressed. i don't see him do things that top nhl d need to do. he gets away with a lot in juniors that will never fly at next level. now, you could say the same about many chl stars, but you watch catton and you see his elite hockey sense. you watch parekh and he always has puck and seems to see offensive opportunities that others don't. i don't see it with yak. i don't see elite vision or transition or anything that suggests he will be the player so many tout him as. i do see big rhd who has been super productive, so there is obviously something there and i wouldn't rule him out becoming next evan bouchard, but i think more likely he busts. i wouldn't take him top half of the 1st round, and not 100% comfortable with him in back half.

Has nothing to do with being a Tanev. You can at least be a Perunovich. Watch a few games. He plays no defense at all. It is totally nonexistent. It’s consistent odd man rushes the other way. Go back and watch the Sudbury game. If you think his stick work is going to be sufficient. Against better talent… it isn’t. I don’t think we’re going to have to worry about it anyway as he will be picked before we even get to.

If you go back and watch the two games against medicine hat, then he was given the assignment of shutting down McKenna. I’m not a huge fan of him as a defensive player either, but he did a good job against McKenna. That doesn’t happen hardly at all. I have to give him that. Run around as much as he normally does, and just focused on his assignment. Being a big right handed shot, he will get picked early.

noted. he is playing a high-risk style, but i think that is because of team's design. he scares me a bit, but i'd bet on that talent after top 3 d are gone.

I agree. The talent is a huge gamble. It’s just figuring out what to do with it and game planning it. Do you have the pieces to make it work?

I keep flip flopping on Dickinson, Silyayev, and Levshunov. Just the inconsistency, but I probably would pick all three over Buium end of the day.

i put silayev on top bc a d his size with his skating has potential to truly dominate, and if he just stays healthy his floor is basically tyler myers, but his offense is less of a sure thing than the others. i could easily see any of the 3 end up as top d in this class when we look back in a decade.

I’m having a hard time keeping Pulkkainen down in the first. His floor looks to be a bottom six giving up the offensive game. He was one of the better defenders at the juniors.

i don't love his feet. he looks like 3rd pairing guy to me. i suspect he goes in 2nd though and if he becomes good 3rd pairing guy that is solid 2nd round pick.

This is what worries me. There's so much uncertainty in the mid-1st Rd D, and it gives me pause given our track record of developing (or rather not developing) young defensemen. Seems like a recipe for a high chance of flopping. I feel a lot better about guys like LSW, Badinka, Emery, Elick later because they seem more bankable in their own zone plus the expectations would be more in-line than the guys going in that 8-15 range. I'm beginning to think we should trade down. We can only repeat the mantra of "BPA, we can draft D next year" for so long until our big league defense starts to look like this....
