2024 DRAFT 5th Pick Dalyn Wakely F

Older right shooting center with offensive abilities. I'd like to see the Oilers take a gamble on at least one of these guys every draft in the later rounds if they are available As a serious cup contender now we can afford to do this! I love this pick and he can now go directly to the AHL or ECHL.

Maybe. He will be 21 before the season is over, what else can he learn down there?
Better he stay there and have more time to get bigger, stronger and faster than get rushed and spend an entire season in the ECHL IMO. It lets his ELC slide a year (if we've even signed him yet?).

Incorrect. ELC only slide if they are 18-19. He was 20 when we drafted him. We haven’t signed him yet though.

Good move for him going the NCAA route

Overall, I wasn't/still not a fan of over-ager CHL picks. Those guys always seem to fizzle out as soon as they go pro. E.g., Stefan, Jake Chiasson, Grubbe, etc
That's why the NCAA route is great now for most CHLers: play against age appropriate competition for 2-3 years in the NCAA instead of being thrown into the A and/or the Coast at 20/21 years old when you're probably not ready.

I wonder if we see more guys doing this.

This works very well for Wakey, who if he's going to make it, it's going to be as a grinding 3/4C. This gives him a year or two in the weight room to get some man strength before going pro and starting his waiver clock.

Several NHL teams will advise their CHL prospects to go to the NCAA for a couple years to develop better before signing. We'll wait and see what happens after this draft

Biggest thing for (often one-dimensionally) talented kids like Wakely will be the level of coaching and attention to detail in the college game. I feel like it could help more CHL kids round out into Rodriguez' types rather than Comrie types.
