Player Discussion Mitch Marner Part Infinity

So which team will finally lay out Marner's asking price? None of the big dogs need him, and teams like Carolina won't want to spend the money.
I'm throwing Detroit into the mix. They've been stuck in limbo for quite some time and need to make a big move.

Why didn't he sign for less?

Imo he did. Look at that drama with our 3 wise men. Look at McDavid. Our little princess were all about maximizing money. If they take less they can sign a new contract sooner for even more money.

Exhibit A

He got some bad advise.

I think Marner got worse. There is a point where a person has so much money it becomes irrelevant. I think if I passed the $100 million mark I may prioritize life achievements over even more money. Even if Marner took 8 years at his same deal it's another $88 million + endorsements. What does he want to buy that he cannot already buy? What does his children need that he cannot provide? What does his great grand children need that he won't be able to provide?

8 year deals mean security. McDavid obviously wants the sure thing. Signing shorter deals are high risk, great if it works out.

Would take nothing for Marner to take one knee on knee or big a big hit and have some concussion problems. I think the closest comparable to Marner is Patty Kane. Look at his cap, point production, etc.

At 34 years old he went from $10.5 million to $2.5 million. At 35 signed a one year deal presumably because that all he could get for $4 million.

I actually think Marner would make the most money signing 8 years with the Leafs at $13ish million. Since it sounds like that ship sailed I think his best chance to make money is a 7 year deal that would take him to 35 years old. Even at $12 million he is still probably ahead of we assume his salary will drop on his next deal like Kanes did.

Maybe he gets $13-14 million x 3-5 years but then at 33 he is Tavares age and we see how that is playing out.

Warren. Buffet has a pretty famous line about pigs ...

Okay, so let's just say he took less.

They have won 0 Cups.

I wonder if he thinks it is worth it or if he thinks he should have taken even less.

Tavares was the first major star to leave his team, he took a discount and went home on a 7 year deal.

Marner, on the other hand, may become the first star to leave specifically in search of a massive payday.

His camp is already working overtime to manage the optics. We're hearing now that he "took too much blame" and he waa disrespected by management, but we know if the Leafs had offered him a two-year deal, he’d have signed it without hesitation. They didn’t. Marners team just doesnt it known its been only about money. 13.5x8 is more than reasonable

Hopefully, Tree makes it clear the sticking point was tge 2-3 year term. One that would essentially screw Toronto from ever being competitive.

To me it just looks like Marner is desperately wanting the market validation that any and all of the 32 teams will give him the Matthews, McDavid treatment and give him the Belle of the ball attention.

Saying you want to go to Team X as a stop over to Team Y is not really the most attractive proposition. Put this in reverse. If Mikko Rantanen was on the market and said “I’ll go to Toronto. But for a couple of years and then I’ll blast off to someone who can pay me more”. Is that a guy you desperately need in the room?

At the end of the day, Marner is a dope. He was going to get paid anyway just doing nothing and staying quiet, but all these leaked details just makes him look greedier and more diva like with each passing tweet.

He established that perception 6 years ago and has done nothing to change it since.
It's even worst now...2 years? lol...woe to the team that signs him for 2 years...forget about team and culture building, just build a team of mercenaries, lol...will he even be considered part of the core or part of the leadership if he only signs 2 years? Let's just have Marner groom the young players to be money hungry mercenaries, lol

Yup let me squeeze every penny I can out of a team on a short term deal, shit my pants in the playoffs and then yell at my teammates to wake the f*** up. I am sure his teammates will love him. Talk about f***ing a team's salary scale and it's chemistry. I pity the team that signs him and look forward to watching him melt in the playoffs for another team.
I believe part of the reason he didnt accept a trade is him and his dad discussed that it is best for his future that Toronto not improve as a result of his departure. Which is 100% true.. but also a kick in the nuts to his "brothers" in the dressing room.

mercenary Mitch
NHL Trade Rumors' Brian La Rose writes, "As a result, while Mikko Rantanen recently set the NHL record for the highest AAV ($12MM) given to a winger, Marner is expected to eclipse that with speculation that multiple teams are ready to offer $14MM or more."

Much of the speculation of late has centered around the Western Conference. The Ducks and Golden Knights are two teams that have been circled as likely to try and break the bank for Marner.

Name one.

This is Team Marner propaganda.

Okay, so let's just say he took less.

They have won 0 Cups.

I wonder if he thinks it is worth it or if he thinks he should have taken even less.

Edmonton went to the cup final 2 years in a row. I don't think he is worrying about money period.

Edmonton has gotten pretty close. A heck of a lot further than the Leafs have. If Edmonton could dump Nurse and got better goaltending they are right there.

Edmonton is almost like prime Pittsburgh with Crosby, Malkin, and Letang. Their issue is the don't have Fleury in net.

With Marner and the others the salary and cap always was a problem for them. Their contracts were always about setting up their next contract, not about winning.

Had Matthews, Marner, and Nylander each signed 8 year deals the leafs would have had Marner for 2 more years at $11 million and Nylander for $7 million still. The difference is Knies contract extension. They could have learned from losing Hyman but why would they. The difference is instead of Hyman leaving they are keeping Hyman (Knies) and letting Marner f*** off.

Some try and argue that Marner doesn't have the build to play in physical areas. Bennett is one of the dirtiest, gritty players in the game. He holds up playing his game despite being surprisingly skinny. Same with Bunting, hes a pest. What about Gallagher or Marchand?
Bennet is 6’1” 195 lbs. He’s probably got 20 lbs on Marner and as you said his game is built on physicality. Marner tries to avoid contact and gets intimidated in the playoffs while Bennett gets better. Marner is an elite playmaker but needs time and space to excel. Something which isn’t available to him against tight checking, physical teams.

He got the biggest contract in the NHL, seems weird to take that if winning is the most important thing.

As a player, I'd be pissed if my underpayment went to overpaying others.

Nope, wrong.

How so? The length? We can get a pretty good list of players with the same length. I wonder what you'd think of all of them.

Crosby, Malkin, Kane, Toews, etc... I am sure I can think of more if you need me to...

A bunch of guys who took shorter term because they were chasing money I guess...

Yes, some say Marner is incapable of physical play because of genetics. Bennett might be the most dirty, physical player in thr league and is just 6'1 193. Bunting is basically the exact same size as Marner and he plays physical and plays well in dirty areas.

Why should any team pay him that much to be a mercenary? lol

If his priority is about the money by committing only 2 years, why would any team think that he's serious about winning?
Some teams may not want to risk signing him to a long term contract anyway given his poor playoff performances. It’s also not the worst strategy in the world if a team (like the Leafs or Lightening) have a short playoff window.

Yup. The money Mitch propaganda machine in high gear

Bunting doesn’t have Marner’s skill so had to develop his game around being a pest. Expecting Marner to be a gritty player is a lost cause. Mental makeup determines that, not just size.

He got some bad advise.
Better teammates mean more points and more successful teams.

Mcdavid producing alot of points, winning trophies and having long playoff runs or winning championships will make him more money over his lifetime than a couple more million every season.

Tom Brady often took less in order to build stronger teams and ein championships. It certainly seems to have made him ALOT more money than he wouldve made had he sought to get maximum pay.

Marner is not the sharpest pencil in the bunch ..

So what is the worst team he could sign with in order to bring a world of hurt and verbal abuse from fans and reporters alike upon himself?

Answer: Carolina Hurricanes

After refusing to waive his NMC blocking a trade to Carolina at TD and robbing Leafs Nation out of Mikko Rantanen, then once again flames out in the playoffs for the Leafs, only he could make the situation even worse.

Canes according to reports are one of the most interested teams most others are in the West.
Brindamour runs a tight ship and its his team... everyone plays within the system, and they play all around the net.

Will Marner be willing to be uncomfortable and play for a coach who doesnt bend for players?

Rantanen also had just 6 points in 13 games as a Cane, which has to be concerning for Marners camp. Especially since they eant a 2 year contract, and will need to keep hos point totals up in order to get his biggest pay day in 2 years.

Edmonton has spent the money they saved on trash

Going to post it here first as nobody(at least I have seen) had said it. If this catches on, then we will know 100% those medias read and take stuff from this board.

MM will start calling ‘The Decision’ very soon and create buzz like LeBron. Maybe some podcast will stream with MM.
If I was marner i would go to San jose
