The problem is that if Eberflus says anything other than ‘I meant to do that,’ it implicates the quarterback, and you can’t do that.

“The plan was to pick up 5 yards on a QB sneak there, then run a quick hit cross to try to pick up the first down. If he’s stopped short we call the TO and kick the FG. The sack changed things a bit since the quick cross needed to be deeper now and that caused some confusion.

In hindsight, we probably should have called the TO right after the sack and regrouped, but we were still operating under the previous plan and by the time we adjusted it was too late to do much different.”

That doesn’t put blame on the QB and at least acknowledges something you did wrong and can grow/learn from. Instead he took the approach of “nah, we did everything perfectly and it was 100% intentional to have the ball at the opposition 35 with 36 seconds and a timeout and finish the game only running 2 more plays and ending with the TO still in our pocket.”

Caleb could be calling time out though. He could’ve done that anyways. But the fact they never did at all, the coach has to do everything to eat that. I think they just forgot they had the time out.

Standard procedure there is that the coach is in control of timeouts, especially with a rookie QB.

Caleb certainly didn’t handle it well, but I give way, way more slack to a rookie QB who just got sacked as opposed to a coach who supposed to be prepared for situations like that and have it all planned out.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's not even allowed to call a timeout.

But the story gets crazier as even Williams realizes the play calls aren't going to work so he's having to make changes on the fly.

It sounds like maybe Caleb didn’t know there was a TO left. Obviously 13 seconds is plenty to run a play and call TO.

But that’s still significantly on the coaching staff for not making sure he knew.

I’ve said it a few times. Everyone involved seems to be trying to talk around forgetting that they had the time out.

Yeah. If that is what Caleb is saying he, clearly didn’t know the situation. All part of learning. QB has to be the smartest guy in Offence. No 2 ways about it.

Raiders same thing with Pierce and his staff. Why spike the ball at 15 seconds if you were not going to run an actual play for more yards on 3rd down? 1st down play ended at 28 seconds, so had the full play clock to use up and wait for 5 seconds or less to spike if they were ok with that distance for the game winning FG.

My evaluation of the situation is that the Raiders were too slow to spike the ball. Took 13 seconds to spike it after Abdullah went down with 28 seconds left. Shave 2 seconds off that to give them 17 seconds, that's enough time for a 4 second play and 12 seconds to spike the ball. But, because, they were slow on the spike, 14 seconds to make the line of the gain and spike the ball was borderline (could end up like Dal vs SF in the PO with the Dak run and failed spike). So, he then opts to just try to kill 4/5 seconds and his team can't even execute that properly.
That falls on the coaches for not having their guys prepared to execute late game spikes and getting organized and lined up quickly to save time. Pierce took a downgrade for his late game decisions. LV played KC tough on the road, but situational football cost them. Is Pierce a guy who can handle late game situational football decisions? And is he coaching his team to be ready for them?

They want to blame the refs, sure. But, then it's still 3rd and 8 from the 38 and a 55 yard attempt in the cold. If they were not comfortable with the time left to gain 3 yards, then trying to gain 8 is even harder and going to eat up another 2 seconds. They didn't hit a sideline throw that drive. KC, kept everything in the middle.

Raiders need to look in the mirror as well. Not sold on AP, especially given the meltdown by his team vs KC on Friday. Either he can't make quick decisions on running another play or just kicking the FG which led to the fumble because they opted to run another play to kill more clock. Or, his team isn't coached well enough to quickly execute a spike play which took 13 seconds from the time the RB was down at 28 seconds. And he doesn't have confidence in his O to run another play and spike the ball in 14 seconds to get another 5 yards closer.

Look at their Division. Reid and Mahomes. Harbaugh and Herbert. Now, Payton and Nix.

AP was only hired because the players threatened a mutiny.

IMO Belichik would jump at the opportunity given Burrow, Chase and Browns levels of talent among others & AFC familiarity.

Issue is, Mike Brown isn't going to hand over roster control or any authority to BB.

Raiders didn't have a QB, so no way someone great like a Harbaugh would have taken the job. If LV was hiring Vrabel, I think the players would have been fine with it given his track record. But, any of the other new hires like in Ten, ATL, Car for example, for sure mutiny.

He could've had they at least said they'd try and move up for a QB in the draft, but anyhow.

Think their target was Penix, could didn't offer enough to get Ten or Chi off their picks. Deep OL draft, so Ten could have moved off theirs. Chi, seems like they targeted WR and the others after Odunze were a clear drop in talent.

Raiders organization really needs to ask themselves how they can compete within their division given the quality of HC and QBs in it.
