Eberflus: Final seconds handled 'the right way'

Bears coach Matt Eberflus said he didn't call Chicago's last timeout in the final seconds of Thursday's game because he was conserving it to set up a field goal attempt.

Williams deserves some blame as well. But the bulk falls on Eberflus.

I just have a hard time getting mad at a rookie QB here when his coach is standing there with the power to stop the clock and doing nothing.

Eberflus just seems like a person that would just stand there and watch as someone was drowning. The plan was that they were supposed to swim and they failed. Too bad.

The problem is that if Eberflus says anything other than ‘I meant to do that,’ it implicates the quarterback, and you can’t do that.

“The plan was to pick up 5 yards on a QB sneak there, then run a quick hit cross to try to pick up the first down. If he’s stopped short we call the TO and kick the FG. The sack changed things a bit since the quick cross needed to be deeper now and that caused some confusion.

In hindsight, we probably should have called the TO right after the sack and regrouped, but we were still operating under the previous plan and by the time we adjusted it was too late to do much different.”

That doesn’t put blame on the QB and at least acknowledges something you did wrong and can grow/learn from. Instead he took the approach of “nah, we did everything perfectly and it was 100% intentional to have the ball at the opposition 35 with 36 seconds and a timeout and finish the game only running 2 more plays and ending with the TO still in our pocket.”

Caleb could be calling time out though. He could’ve done that anyways. But the fact they never did at all, the coach has to do everything to eat that. I think they just forgot they had the time out.

Standard procedure there is that the coach is in control of timeouts, especially with a rookie QB.

Caleb certainly didn’t handle it well, but I give way, way more slack to a rookie QB who just got sacked as opposed to a coach who supposed to be prepared for situations like that and have it all planned out.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's not even allowed to call a timeout.

But the story gets crazier as even Williams realizes the play calls aren't going to work so he's having to make changes on the fly.

It sounds like maybe Caleb didn’t know there was a TO left. Obviously 13 seconds is plenty to run a play and call TO.

But that’s still significantly on the coaching staff for not making sure he knew.
