The way I view it is that a good mercenary can be the difference maker that wins or loses a game, but won't win or lose you a series. We don't beat the Avs last season even if Monahan were good, because Hellebuyck wasn't and the team as a whole let the games turn into chaos. But Stastny was invaluable in 2018 because he played a big role in multiple games, even if he were nowhere near as important as Scheifele, Wheeler, Byfuglien, or Hellebuyck.

If we were in the same position, Chevy would be making a full court press to re-sign Ehlers before moving him for futures.

Further they're competing against the Ducks, Blues, Canucks & Flames for that final wild card spot. Only one of those 4 teams is making it & the Flames, Blues & Canucks have better odds.
