I don't believe I said teams wouldn't trade promising young defenseman for a proven scoring forward because they obviously do, you just don't want to be the ones on the losing end of McDonagh for Gomez or Sergachev for Drouin.

Most notably, part of the reason Lombardi preached "build from the net out" is because of the time it takes for players to settle into their role. With goaltenders, so much of it is mentality, it takes time to mature. But defensemen can take time, and at the point of the trade, their defensemen on the right side (as far as prospects) were Durzi, Spence, Clarke, and Walker. Clarke had upside of a No. 1 defenseman, but they slow-boiled him. Nobody expected Durzi, Spence, or Walker to be a top-pairing guy.

As high as I was on Clarke, he also could have (and still could) miss. It's the antithesis of the Johnson trade, where Voynov was already on the same level as he (and he filled the RD slot to Johnson's Left-handed shot).

It was bad timing for the Fiala trade. The team needed a rebuild and to infuse its roster with a younger core. Not trading youth for another hurrah with the older core.

Faber is almost a spitting image of Drew Doughty and I wouldn’t be surprised if he won a Norris at some point in his career. I don’t think there’s an active defenseman that more closely resembles Doughty’s game than Brock. Maybe a guy like McAvoy? That’s pretty good company.

The Kings are playoff fodder and put up more of a fight before Fiala was part of the equation. The Kings have won seven total playoff games since 2014. Minnesota has made the playoffs eight times and actually won a couple of rounds. What are we talking about here? We should thump our chest to the Wild because they missed the playoffs last season while the Kings got boat raced and bounced in five games?

Even if you want to call Fiala a great player and Faber only a solid one, the Kings are fodder themselves. Faber would be contributing longer and at a more important position than Fiala. It's pretty easy to understand.

Now, if this was the World Championships that Fiala can play in every season since they occur once the first round is over, I'd say do the trade because he's awesome in that format.

What success of Minny ? Somebody else came up with that because they have won a few games in a row. I don’t know.

Faber is a right handed defenseman which are already lacking in the NHL. It says enough about Minnesota’s defense that he is playing 25 minutes a night.

I was forced to watch a ton of Minnesota games last year unfortunately. Thats not a luxery.

Most here are statswatching. Rookie voting, calder finalist, ice time. Yes i see that too. I can name a ton of players who are getting too much ice time and are playing 1st line minutes due to being a right handed shot.

These trophy’s are a total waste of everybody’s time anyway. What a poverty that is every year.

I think it needs some time. Wait a few years. I think some (not you specifically) have forgotten how good Drew actually was in his rookie and sophomore year.

Kings dealt from a position of strength at the time. Both teams got what they wanted and needed.

I don't see why two teams can't both benefit from a trade. People seem to think that a trade is a zero sum game, that one team has to lose a trade. I hope Fiala continues to provide PPG offense. I hope Faber continues to perform well for the Wild. Good for them. Worked out well for both teams so far.

Still LA is not lacking a right shot defenseman and with Faber as franchise #1 defenseman you are not getting far. Same with Brodin.

at the time it was a win-win, now in hindsight it looks like a massive L for LA. but who knows if LA kept Faber what it would have done with the massive log jam on RD the kings already had. one of blakes biggest failures among many was not trading defenseman and keeping them far too long where they had little to no value.

Unfortunate part of this argument for you is that you can't use stat watching as an attack when trying to support Fiala. He's a stat watching all-star.

As for Minnesota, they aren't playoff fodder because Faber is the #1 defenseman: he's played one full season and they are eating a ton of dead cap space. He will be a major part of any future success they have and he's going to have more time to have success with them than Fiala will here in LA.

Also, just because you have a stud RHD already, doesn't mean having more than one is a bad idea.

The question for me with Faber is around if he is actually a no1 d man or a number 2 playing the role of a #1. People saw Roy as a #3 but for me he was a solid but average #4 guy that, even then, only properly flourished in that slot when Gav signed.

I’ve not seen enough on Faber to have a valid opinion. For the record I was a huge Faber fan from the day we drafted him. I never predicted him as a no1 but IIRC a 2/3 level guy. I was ok with the trade or would have been without the 1st round pick. The rebuild had already ended too early so it was the right type of trade to make, in that context. It was always a question of which RHD was moved for more scoring.

Plenty of mediocre GM’s wind up making the best trade of their careers when Blake is on the other side of the table. Chayka, Cheveldayoff, Benning, Guerin, and Kekalainen are all considered lackluster to some degree and all have taken Blake for a ride, and usually do so even when Blake has all the leverage in the deal.

The idea that it's any sort of win for this franchise is absurd.
