2024-25 San Diego Gulls/Tulsa Oilers

Those are some names

3-2 loss for the Gulls, that was a tough loss as they were by far the better team in periods 2 and 3. Sprong got the GWG in OT, long range shot that I'm sure Clang would probably want back

Biakabutuka made his debut, and I found it interesting that Warren was paired with him (on his off side no less). Pretty big responsibility for an AHL rookie to be paired with a guy just up from the ECHL, but I think that shows how impressive Warren has been this season.

On Biakabutuka I thought he looked solid on debut, first period he was reserved and didn't extend much (no surprise there). But in periods two and three he started to push the play, and got involved. He's able to get into some nice positions thanks to his skating. Interested to see more of him, that offensive confidence is something the Gulls need on the back end.

Meyer-Mysak-Pasta continues to be the Gulls best line, just create so many chances each game. But more importantly, the offense on that line runs through Pasta's stick (and did again last night).

I've said this is a few times, but I really want to see improvements on the defensive side from Luneau. I know some people have said they aren't too concerned, but I'm concerned watching Luneau get beaten so easily round the outside by AHL level forwards. It happened at least three times in this game, which led to good scoring chances. He desperately needs to improve on that before becoming a regular NHL defenceman. On the plus side, I thought Luneau was very good offensively again, and you can tell he's beefed up as he throws his weight around too.

I totally forgot that we sent Dionicio to Swiss league, which opened up a d-man roster spot for BK to be elevated from the Oilers to the Gulls.

Knowing that Luneau's defense is still far behind and Warren is still in development, I do hope we sign RD Moore as soon as his season is done in the NCAA's.

Is luneau adding weight hurting his skating? I wonder if he is bulking beyond natural filling out.

If this comment was referring to @mightyquack post on Luneau getting beat easily round the outside, I took it that Luneau needs to learn how to play better defense such as approach, gauging oncoming opponent's speed, how to use his length, etc... as opposed to bad skating. Gudas isn't fast, but he knows where to go to mitigate getting easily beat. Offensively, Luneau's a beast b/c he knows how to attack, especially with his new bigger body.

During last year's rookie tourney, Luneau had a lack of awareness in the neutral zone that left LaCombe on a few 1v2 situations. Luneau's mind is always on offense. LaCombe usually cleaned up the defensive end.

Granted, Luneau lost all last season to work on improving his defense since half of his season was being enclosed within a gym and the other half of the season in the hospital due to staph infection. No added learning experience last year for Luneau. This is his first pro season of extended length of play and it's exposing his defensive deficiency. Luneau will probably be a longer project to develop defensively. Minty and Zell, both OFD's, also struggle playing defense at the pro level. It would behoove the Ducks to at least re-sign RD Helleson to prevent pushing Luneau to the NHL next season b/c we still have Gudas and Trouba on board.

Imagine being some scrawny 20yo and having these two 6'4" 200lb+, strong skaters coming at you lmao

Baileyh has been a nice addition, such an upgrade of Regenda. Brings speed and a high level of physical play, and a little bit of skill too.

Colangelo continues to just score....madness that he was being put on a grinding 4th line at the NHL level.

The Gulls defense must be the biggest in the AHL at this point.

Warren: 6'4 224
Heatherington: 6'4 215
Hinds: 6'3 199
Luneau: 6'2 215
McKeown: 6'1 201
Biakabutuka: 6'4 203

The Gulls actually only have two players under 6'0 on the entire roster (Meyer and Mysak at 5'11).

How has Gaucher looked this season? Is it realistic to see him getting NHL games next year?
I posted this back in mid January and it still applies now IMO.
Gaucher is definitely the biggest impact on that line if you have been watching San Diego games this season. That's not to take anything away from Caufield, but Gaucher is the one that is first on the forecheck and is applying the pressure and pretty much setting the tone for the line, while Caufield is typically more around the front of the net.

I'd be very surprised if he doesn't make the opening night roster to be honest.

His defensive play is pretty fantastic, there's a reason he's put out heavily on the PK and in key situations. His play in the defensive and neutral zone is fantastic, it's the offensive zone where there is struggles as he's not great with generating chances with the puck on his stick. On the flipside, as I said above, his forechecking and physical play is really good which opens up opportunities for his linemates which has been the case when Sidorov was on their line earlier in the season, and more recently Myatovic. Both Sidorov and Myatovic have have had their best production on the Gaucher-Caufield line opposed to away from it so far this season.

It just depends what your expectations are for Gaucher. Are you expecting a middle 6 forward to chip in 15-20 goals a season? I'm not sure Gaucher has that in him. But I can see him as an excellent defensive forward that can chip in 10 goals a season while being the #1 defensive forward on the team and being a heavy physical presence.

+/- isn't a fantastic stat but when you consider how terrible the Gulls are at ES (93 scored v 121 conceded) and Gaucher has 8 points yet is only a -3...he's been pretty damn good at not being on the ice when goals go in.

I think Gaucher will be a nice change of pace from our extremely soft 4th liners of recent years and will provide some good defensive value in our bottom 6.

(I'm not going to get in whether Gaucher was worth the pick or not, just my opinions on where he slots in).

I freely admit I don't watch the Gulls, but I'm surprised that he's been so solid you think he'd make next year's opening night roster (even if it's on the 4th line).

Johnston may as well be retiring here, so that doesn't leave too many other options to swap out.

Gaucher hasn't had any puckluck (and in my mind he has lost his selfconfidence offensively).

Yes, Gaucher is defensively really good, but I think Caulfield is even better! Too bad his (Caulfield) hands are even worse than Gaucher's. And he is a couple years older than Gaucher (March 2001 vs. November 2003).
