Can’t blame him. Better pay over there for a player like him

Yeah even for a guy who was on a fairly heavy AHL salary the last couple years (350k/400k), there's more money to be made overseas. In Switzerland probably 450-600k tax free with very little travel in season. For the KHL, there are comparable talents to De Leo who make well north of 1M USD, but even the average salary is 450k.

how many contracts are we at now? It seems like we have a ton of young players who are in the AHL due to having so many picks in the rebuild. I wonder if that's hurting us in signing those fringe NHL players, who end up getting waived and helping the AHL team.

45 (assuming Sennecke and Solberg play fewer than 10 NHL games this season).

Welcome. Another guy from Austria, I guess he has some previous connection to McIlvane?
Anybody knows what will be his responsibility with the Gulls?

PS
He can play Scott Niedermayer if we shoot a Netflix series about his final seasons :sarcasm:

The article cited that Barr was the head coach for team Canada U18 in 2021. Besides the connection to players McTavish and Zellweger, there is the connection to former asst coach Stothers, who is part of the San Diego front office/coaching group now.

Barr was coach of the Vienna Capitals, so pretty sure there were no connections. What he did was developing local young players into regulars. Something the Austrian league lacks a lot. Too much players from other countries are hired usually instead of learning their own talent to the league. In Vienna he was asked to do so and did well.

Matsushima and Codd (on AHL contracts last year) each signed contracts with ECHL teams (not Tulsa). Leaves Carroll, Crnkovic, and Wolff as the only unsigned Gulls free agents

Interesting. I thought he might have been drafted during his first year of eligibility, but he didn't stand out in our games in terms of skill or skating for a small guy. Probably ECHL depth like Max Golod. I would have preferred a dart for a tough athletic grinder instead though... players that teams like Nashville sign.

Haven't seen an official source on this (EP virtually is though), and I'm assuming a full Gulls camp roster announcement will be coming pretty soon, but according to EP transfers:

F Conner Roulette (former unsigned Stars draft pick)
G Luke Lush (NCAA free agent)

have been added to the Gulls roster. Assuming these guys are invites for them

In addition to these 2 PTOs, Gulls also have forwards Solag Bakich and Michael Farren on PTOs

Am I crazy, or does it feel like the Gulls should be significantly better this year?

It seems like they are going to have at least 3-4 players who could be contending for an NHL spot

This was the case last year too, but they were terrible. Talent isn’t enough.
Was it? The only player I would say that fit the bill is Zellweger (who obviously left the team and thus hurt it).

There were guys who I thought might get a look when injuries came but this year they will have one of Nesterenko (who looks better this year IMO)/Colangelo, one of Zell/Luneau, maybe Harkins/Carson Meyer - all of whom I feel like could easily spend the entire year in the NHL, not just fill in for an injury. Granted they wouldn't be gamebreakers at the top level but still.

That's in addition to the bubble guys like Sido, Gaucher, Regenda, etc.

I really like gauchers game. Even if he ends up a fourth line center he’s going to be a major pest. Ya we might’ve taken him too early but it is what it is at this point.
