This ragging on his defensive play because of a lack of speed is annoying. He won a Selke because he is a slow stiff on defense. Got it.
He's a big dude with long strides and a huge reach with his stick. He covers a lot of ice even if he is not a speed demon. Then there is his IQ where he sees the play as it's coming and gets to the right spots ahead of time.
Little of this criticism of SC's defensive play was out there until Tortorella started to make a deal of it last season. The jealous little twerp with the goatee just couldn't stand the fact that someone was liked more than him in the room and was going to get a C on his sweater. He's such a small person.
He's 32. Couts isn't going to get any faster, but the league has the last few years.
At wing, you don't skate as far, and that makes it easier for him to play near the net like a PF.

G moved from center to wing and that has helped extend his career.

What, no more playing low, where he is most lethal, to help make it easier for him to get back on defense?
With his vision, passing ability and shot, he's probably lethal in any role in the O-zone.
For example, he'd fit the G role to a "T".

One reason to move him around is defenses are going to key on him, and the more unpredictable his usage, the harder it will be to match up against him.

I'd prefer to let him fill the Michkov role unimpeded

Oh we are well aware that Michkov is going to fit the Giroux role to a “T.”

That role being a wasted career as the front office fails to build a team around him.
Pretty much they stumbled into Michkov and think their work is done, while in reality you build around two or three guys. But again flyers are trying to replicate blues Cinderella run.

I'm sure there are better ways to measure this, but Scott is conceding a whopping 4.67 GA/60 at ES, and 4.27 GA/60 at 5on5. Highest of all forwards with 100+ TOI.

Give Cates credit for having the incredibly low number of 0.78 GA/60 at 5on5 in his 21 games, and a GF% of 78.6% when the next best is 47.6%. 🤯 Interestingly, Cates has the lowest xGF%.

Cates is inept offensively but he’s definitely an effective player that can retrieve pucks and keep shit alive. A good bottom 6 player for sure.

Line chemistry is a funny thing, the Cates line is playing pretty well, Brink is a playmaker, Foerster is a shooter and Cates is the guy who does the dirty work and CYA for his linemates. Having two smart guys on a line encourages D-men to be more aggressive b/c they know the forwards will cycle back to cover them and not get caught deep on a regular basis.

Torts seems to have settled on his lines, and so far it's working pretty well.

Now the goaltenders . . . .
