2024-25 Roster Thread #2: Midseasonnar

Briere took over in April 2023. Couldn't do anything until that summer (past the TDL).

It's definitely a baffling thing to see when the offensive zone cycle consists of the best carrier on a line simple skating in a circle until they can shoot, or pass vertically to set up an easy shot.

Remember how much we saw about how Voracek was a selfish bum POS for doing that? And then Hayes? Now it's more common than ever. It has been weird to see. It's new for this year. It would be weird for that to be a thing Tortorella actually wants. Do they players see it as the best option? Is their dirt-simple OZ cycle so easy to cover that there isn't any better option? It raises many interesting questions.

When a TK or a Voracek or a Couturier do it, there's a strong chance they have some idea about where they're going to hit someone getting open. When a Cates or Tippett or Laughton or even Hathaway are doing it, though...no. It's just wasting time.

Scott Wheelers assessment on Jett. The review indicates a bottom 6 center with speed and penalty-killing ability. It seems to that the Flyer violated a key rule. Draft the best player available not the best player in the position that you need(sounds a lot like
Ryan Poehlings draft projection).

Jett Luchanko (F, Philadelphia Flyers): I wanted to see more offense and for him to be more noticeable at five-on-five, where I thought his game was vanilla, but he was Canada’s best penalty killer for me. Excellent routes/skating/pressure points made him a really valuable PKer. Used more late in games with the lead. Overpassing at times when I wanted to see him try to take charge. Skating is a real asset, for sure. Good poise on the puck later in the tournament. His best game was against USA. I wonder how much offense he’s going to bring at the NHL level but there’s a lot of value elsewhere in his game.

Kucherov, 52g 6-8 14 (ES) at 20 years old, next season 27-23 50 ES, hit 100 points at 24
Panarin came over at 24 and was an instant star
Kaprizov came over at 23
Even Pastrnak, who started at 18, didn't become a "star" until 2 seasons later.

Michkov is on track for 60 points as a rookie. That's more than fine.

“On pace” but trending down, Torts won’t stop until Michkov has become a full on checker and tackles people like Poehling.

Cant believe Atkinson is still getting ice time in 2025, but thankfully two short seasons from now him and Hayes will be off the books.

He’ll be in the NHL next year, can’t wait for Torts to coach him into the perfect Laughton #culture type of player. 0 risk and always 100% grinding and checking.

What he saw reflected Luchanko's role, top PK guy and 4th line center. Raised his game against the toughest opponent.

He'd be the perfect center for Tippett and TK, has the speed to cover for their mistakes and can keep up with them on the rush.

Poehling struggles with them b/c he's neither a playmaker nor a good defensive center, his forte is forechecking.
 
Luchanko has no offensive game. Smart teams don’t blow a first round dc on someone like that.
Day by day it’s becoming more obvious how inept this organization has become. When Snider was alive he was an aggressive risk taker. He wanted players that were that way on the ice as well. These guys currently running the show are 180 degrees in the other direction. They are boring in their actions on and off of the ice. It’s become a bad product that requires new dynamic leadership.
