Kurashev, despite being scratched for 15 games, has the worst +/- in the entire league. Found that kind of interesting and telling of just how bad he's been, even if it is a flawed stat.

+/- is flawed in some ways but still useful in others. Like any one number on its own is not telling a full story. But when comparing one player's +/- to another's when they play on the same team can be very telling. Like when Duncan Keith was +30 in 2008 and nobody else on the team except Sharp at +23 was above +13 or something like that, that's a big deal.

I'd also say that if you have the worst +/- in the league, compound that with being scratched for 15 games, that is terrible no matter how flawed the stat might be.

Why? Just play in the OHL.
NCAA is an older league that likely challanges more physically than playing against 18/19 year olds he already was dominating as a 17 year old this season before getting hurt. Dominating 18/19 year olds even more as a year older doesn't push the development as much as playing 22/23 year olds in college.

I'd rather him play another year in the OHL and then play in the AHL the year after. He wasn't really dominating before he was hurt, and I dont think there's any proof that spending another year in the OHL hurts somebodies development, especially a young Dman.

Small sample size, but he is 3rd in the OHL for pts/game for D (only bested by guys that went #9 & #11 in the last draft that are 1.25-1.5 years older than Schaefer). I would say he was at a dominating level in the OHL and (again small sample size) looked like Canada's best player in his only game and the pre tourney exhibitions. I would rather have him pushed playing older better competition which college hockey is about to see a bump in level of competition with CHL players being eligible and coming next fall. Hopefully the Hawks luck into being able to pick him and we have something to debate next Summer.

Still has work to be done defensively. Far more to the game than points. If he goes to college, you won't see him in the AHL for at least 2 extra years. It's not even an option.

Why would going to college prevent him from going to the AHL the following season? Spoiler alert....an under 20 player in the OHL can not go to the AHL, it is either NHL or OHL. If you want to see Schaefer in the AHL in his draft + 2 season, playing college hockey opens that up as an option where staying in the OHL does not.

If he's going to College, you think he'll go for 1 year? Highly doubtful. He can go back to OHL next year and play in the AHL D+2.

Plenty of college D stay a single season, our very own Lev being a recent example. And no Schaefer can't play in the AHL in D+2 if he stays in the CHL because he will not be 20 years old (see Korchinski, Kevin).

Davidsons got some work to do.

Maybe you add in Martone Misa or Hagens?

This doesn't even get you to the floor

I would assume any Jones deal is having some bad money come back as well, I would just hope it's a lot less long term.
Despite any reports, I'd be shocked if Jones gets traded. The team doesn't really want to trade him and he doesn't really want to be traded. The reports are based on the fact that he's a big, talented RHD - a commodity in high demand right now. And with the cap going up substantially, his contract isn't as much of an albatross as we think.

So despite how desirable he may be to other teams, AND how some of our fans hate him, if we trade him, who plays defense on the right side next year? Counting on Lev or Rinzel to be ready to play big minutes would be foolish and then if we lose Jones, we're in the position of every other team who doesn't have enough RHD.

It makes perfect sense that other teams would ask about him and it excites some of us because some of us hate him, but I think he's ours for a while whether we like it or not.

I think the minutes thing gets overblown, but Cody Ceci is currently logging 20+ minutes a night for the Sharks on the right side and is a UFA after this season. Start with a top 4 of....

Vlasic-Crevier
Korchinski-Ceci

And then trying rotating one of these 3 on the right side on the third pairing. I'm pretty sure Allan played some games on the right side earlier this year and looked fine.

Allan/EDM/Kaiser

Yeah except I've seen Ceci and he isn't nearly as good as Jones. He's also not going to sign here unless we overpay for him and then we replace one overpaid defensemen with another who isn't as good. Plus if we trade jones, we're gonna have to retain some money and then we're back where we started with a worse player.

I think the fans booing Jones woke him up a little and hurt his feelings. He was sleepwalking out there since he came back from the injury. He played better the last few games, lets see how long he keeps it up.

maybe they should cut his minutes so he can play with more energy

It's not about acquiring Ceci because he's good, it's about a replacement for a year or two while being able to free yourself from the Jones contract since people are worried about who is going to eat up 20 minutes a night without him.

And don't forget the team played better WITHOUT Jones in the lineup, so I really think his replacement is far less of a concern than you're suggesting.
