Martinez is a better player then Korchinski right now.
The best thing for Nazar, Korchinski, Levshunov etc is to be playing big minutes and winning down in Rockford. It only creates bad habits playing in Chicago right now. Too many players are rushed these days and never reach their full potential. Unfortunately it takes ,time to develop and we are where we are

Reichel and Kurashev have been legitimately looking better than from what I saw of them last year. May be eating some crow on these guys.

I don't want to give Marner $12+ x 7. Especially before Bedard gets his big contract. We spent the last 7 years what it does to a young core when you sign a big UFA before your core pieces get their deals. I don't like Marner in the playoffs either.

Fair enough. I'd probably take the chance if he would sign here. He brings an element that we can't expect anyone from our system to bring and fills a huge hole on the top line. I mean we saw Foligno playing there just a few games ago and we don't exactly have anyone we've drafted that we can expect to take that spot for good anytime soon.

I'd be curious to see how he does in the playoffs on a team other than Toronto. I think a lot of those issues are from an organizational standpoint and driven by Matthews.

I can’t see Toronto letting Marner walk. The time to do something was to bully him into waiving his nmc this summer. If they won’t give him his $12 million or whatever, don’t see why the Hawks should.

Don’t laugh, but I’d be down for a short deal for Tavares.

Marner is a 100 point defensively responsible winger. You take him if you can get him. There may not be another top notch UFA willing to come play for the Blackhawks for 10 years.

He's not a playoff performer.

That matters far more than 100 points.

What makes you say that...?
How many elite UFAs hit the market in the last 10 years? Tavares Stamkos Hossa Panarin Pietrangelo Gaudreau?

Stamkos stayed in Tampa and Panarin only wanted to go to NY and Tavares only wanted to go home to Toronto.

He's not a playoff performer.

That matters far more than 100 points.
Until he is. We have to make the playoffs first.

Assuming both were possible, would you rather trade for Brady Tkachuk or sign Rantanen?
You have to be somewhat cautious with B. Tkachuk. His contract becomes NMC starting this next offseason, and then he he has 3 years and then is UFA. Let's say the Hawks are still kind of bad next year even with B. Tkachuk and finish like 24/32, then the following year they're mid and make or miss the playoffs by a point or two. Suddenly he's a year away from UFA, is he signing the dotted line for an extension? It's not like he owes the Hawks anything at that point, it isn't where he came up and he's only been there for a couple years. Maybe he's tired of not winning and isn't fully on board to "ride it out" and see if this rebuild goes well. Is he even gonna age well even if he did based on his style of play? Very possible you're staring the down the barrel of a 28 year old player a year removed from UFA who would get to pick his spot to waive his trade protection/extend with, which likely means a crappy return when you likely paid a premium to bring him in.

Stamkos wasnt elite either once he left Tampa

Banking on a next "Hossa" signing to fill a star forward slot would be pretty poor managing. Like you said, it rarely happens and usually those guys have a very particular destination in mind

Rantanen for free. I like Tkachuk as a player just as much.
Isn't the math more like Tkachuk at 8.5 or whatever his contract is PLUS what it takes to acquire him versus probably 12-ish to sign Rantanen? Both probably require an overpayment.

Sign Tkachuk in 3 years, when we are on the cusp of playoffs.

He just turned 25

We have futures we can afford to give up if we can put a pick package (Hawks 2025 1st + Leafs 2025 1st) + secondary prospect package (Dach, Thompson, Harding, etc)

Tkachuk would be able to improve team now and be part of core going forward while our best prospects join team in coming years

If Sens want our top prospects (Nazar, etc) + Picks then yeah likely not interested in trade

You can't see it? I can. Some team will give Marner 12M per but I hope it's not Chicago.

Plays like a 100 point player in the regular season and then like a 60 point forward in the playoffs. The guy doesn't have it and 100 points today isn't the 100 points of the early/mid-2010s. 11 players scored at a 100+ point pace last year; 14 players produced at that rate the previous year; 18 players the year before that. Scoring is way up in the regular season but if you can't score in the playoffs it doesn't matter.
