2024-25 Roster…too soon?

tank it out one more season. We need a top 5 forward pick
We don’t need to tank. We just don’t have the horses up front yet. Just a bad team

He's an interesting one. He has not been very good since he signed that big 7 year extension. But at the same token, this is Buffalo we're talking about who have historically struggled to develop their young guys. I'm still not sure I would go for him, but he wouldn't be a bad idea either.

I would still love to see Kyle somehow get Wright out of Seattle if they still are gonna sour on him. Fantilli would be incredible but I highly doubt Columbus gives him up unless the Hawks start talking about their own 2025 pick next year + a young guy or two. He's the type of guy you build around, not trade.
Fantili is not gonna be traded for anything. They have never had a legit top C and have had issues retaining talent. He wanted to play there. If they do that, fold that franchise

I never had he was. Someone brought him up. I agree that's the type of player you build around. If you get him, obviously it would be an incredible get.

I want Dylan Cozens. No idea what it would take to get him. He had a down year last year and is struggling mightily right now. But it would solve the Hawks center problems and he fits right in with the timeline.

Why would it be time to get a big fish? lol. Hawks still suck.

If not after this year when? I think this is about time to consider it to use that big fish along with our prospects making progress to take the leap from a bottom 5 team to at least being in the talk for a WC spot.

Sign Rantanen and hopefully Nazar and Korchinski are ready to be full time members on the Hawks next year. Levshunov and another top 5 pick would also be damn near ready depending on who they draft.

Can't rebuild forever, not to mention they'll need to sign guys just to hit the cap floor. At a certain point I want that to be spent on guys who will be here for a while and not plugs like Brodie, Hall, etc.

There's just no way Rantanen is going to be available. Look at the Avs right now. They are MacKinnon, Makar and Rantanen. Very shallow and they can't count on Landeskog and Nichushkin and what they might provide moving forward.

How do they make that work cap wise? Genuinely asking. I glance at their situation and it looks like they have no room to offer him a big raise, but I'm far from a cap expert.

Mittelstadt, Lehkonen (12 team no trade list), Wood (6 team no trade list), O'Connor, Girard (9 team no trade list), Manson (12 team no trade list) all on the table as potential trade candidates if they need to make it work. Rantanen is too much a priority. The uncertainty of Landeskog and Nichushkin could (again) give them some more cap space as well.

We'll see I suppose but that sounds like a lot of hoops to jump through. I'd kill to have him here.

If given the chance I'd still bring him or even Marner in as a backup.

Glancing at options for the following year I think the top dogs would be Kaprizov and Eichel (who would then be entering his 30s). I have no interest in an aging Eichel. I'd love Kaprizov but if you can get Rantanen or Marner after this year is it worth risking missing on on Kap the folliwing year?

That's exactly how all those teams got in trouble.

We shouldn't be tanking hard next year, but I'm also fine waiting to see who exactly we have in the prospect pool that's a difference maker.

We need to wait for Levshunov, Rinzel and KK anyway before we can do anything serious. Commesso/Gajan too.

I'd be very happy with Rantanen though of course.
Its also how some teams stay mediocre. Florida and Vegas went out and got elite talent when they were able to.

Marner would be the best player on the team,

The real "big fish" UFA singings, looking from a last year standpoint, are like Jake Guentzel, Steven Stamkos, Elias Lindholm, Brandon Montour, Brady Skjei and Chandler Stephenson.

Yeah, cap will continue to rise too. You'd be locking up Marner from his age 28-35 seasons so any drop in play towards the end is likely off-set by the cap increasing. Not to mention I think his game will age fine anyway and you're not looking at any huge drop offs in play towards the end of that deal.

I'd welcome his playmaking to setup Bedard's shot in a heartbeat. Then just need to find an Alex Tuch kind of player for their other linemate.

We dont have any players that are going to command big contracts besides Bedard. Hopefully Levshunov in 4 or 5 years but Jones will be off the books by then.

It goes to show how much of a bargain that Vlasic contract is and will continue to be. I wish it was a couple of years longer but that's the kind of "sweetheart" deal you need to help build your team and offset the big money guys (at least the ones who deserve it). We got spoiled with Keith making 5.5 per for a decade + and even Hossa's contract (even if it isnt legal now).

RFA Contracts often have a way of ending up the best steals of the League. Last year, Florida had guys like Reinhart, Verhaeghe, Forsling, Montour, Luostarinen. Nice thing about Vlasic is he already looks like a coup.

I don't understand how players like Brodie and Martinez are on the roster this year over Korchinski. This kid needs to be playing in NHL and developing

I think we all would, but there is no guarantee he's even an option when you might have a chance to lock up Marner.
I don't want to give Marner $12+ x 7. Especially before Bedard gets his big contract. We spent the last 7 years what it does to a young core when you sign a big UFA before your core pieces get their deals. I don't like Marner in the playoffs either.
