Another mention of Seth Jones in an article regarding the Maple Leafs. Can’t help but wonder of these “tidbits” are based on something being heard through the grapevine. Point 44 for those interested.

That's the Toronto sports press hoping aloud for a better than abysmal return for Marner.

The likelihood that both Jones and Marner waive to facilitate a trade where they exchange teams is almost zero.

SKA likely offering more money and certainly offering a bigger role than anything in the NHL, not looking to wait until July 1st just to kick the tires. Old enough that there's no true upside to hanging around near waiver fodder level, so it all makes sense for Zaitsev.

It seems like Mrazek and Necas are pretty good friends. Hopefully he can get Necas over here to play with Bedard.

That a definite win trade…

Zaitsev played 58 for the Hawks as a serviceable dman, Chicago also acquired a 2nd(Roman Kantserov) in 2023 and still another asset in a 4th in 2026 which could still be a top 100 pick…

Ottawa lost that deal

Yes, Ottawa dumped Zaitsev's deal to give them room to trade more picks for Chychrun and fit him in under cap. There is a chance Chychrun ends up walking, and Ottawa still hasn't made the Playoffs.

I saw the typical insanely optimistic TOR media article where they mentioned Korchinski/Moore/20th OA for Marner and almost passed out. Even for TOR media that's just a insane deal.

For what? A good player with 1 year left so the team can still miss the playoffs.....KD can improve the team without giving up the hard earned prospects he has accrued.

100% agreed. IMO, the Hawks perspective would be doing the Leafs a favor by taking on $11M cap hit for 1 year of MM. The deal that was proposed was so insane that I was just shocked. Any MM deal with the Hawks would be predicated on what the Hawks think they could get for MM with retention at the trade deadline.

MM might have something close to that trade value (like half to 2/3rds) from a contending team, but certainly not for the Hawks.

f*** that!

Seriously he is not worth the cost in assets to acquire him and the awful contract he wants (8 x $8M)
20th and Reichel for Necas signed 8x7.5. Necas years 25/26-33/34 years old. 25-30 goals 30-45 assists. Speed Size and Compete with another level he can get to.

Necas isn’t anything more than an average middle 6 complimentary piece. Trading away young assets for someone like this and then handing them 8mil a year for 8 years is the type of move that will derail a rebuild. Like when LA traded Faber for Fiala.

Giving up a really good prospect for a very good NHL player seems like a win-win move and it can't be argued as anything short of that for LA. Fiala's been very good for them. If you want to talk about a trade that hurt them, it's the PLD trade, not the Fiala trade.

Reichels absolute top would be a good piece like Necas. Bedard is your most important asset. Surrounding him with trash again can not happen for his development. Having to carry the offense like that game in and game out is a problem.

In two years Reichel will be a 30-45 point winger that just never paned out and Hage/Boisvert/Basha is playing his first year in Rockford. Whos coming to play with Bedard? Make sure your best asset is in the best position to succeed.

Quality over Quantity. Especially when you can sign a guy for his full prime.

I assume you're kidding because that would be a really silly move. You can literally wait a couple years and sign a Martin Necas level player for "free" (i.e., cap space). No idea why people are hellbent on trading draft capital for mid-20s guys a few years from UFA age while the Hawks still suck.

So you could have one Necas and sign another, or if he's worse, a worse than Necas and still sign a Necas. To anyone familiar with the NHL, teams draft and develop players, the good ones develop into quality well-priced RFA players that provide really good Middle Six value. They approach their UFA years, price themselves out and go sign on a new team with a need.

Or if they become superstars, they are extended 8-years and there's no talk of ever acquiring them to begin with because their team prioritized extending them through UFA years.

There is little reason to be premature and try and capture the "quality middle six" RFA players via trading your own picks while rebuilding unless you think you're a piece or two away. You draft and develop your own, and then you supplement with UFA signings with your cap space.

Whos going to play with Bedard for these next 3 years? Or you dont think him playing with quality players matter?

Necas is a 25 year old. He doesnt get to play with Aho. Playing with Bedard he can be a 75+ point guy. Why are we afraid to use the assets collected to get better?

UFA and/or see who emerges. Bedard had 0.897 PPG as an 18 year old on a Dumpster Fire roster. He's gonna be fine. The goal can be to improve the Dumpster Fire aspect without throwing caution and patience to the wind.

Whos the UFA? Nobody thats going to be here long term.

The plan is to hope somebody emerges? Thats not a plan. Instead of hoping Reichel emerges and then pay him in 2 years for his emergence you can trade him for a proven talent. Surround your most important asset while they develop and have someone who will be around when you compete.

Its just as much about Bedard as it is Necas. I also think Necas can be a PPG player. Hes 25!

Sorry, is it 3 years or long term now?

That is quite literally what a rebuild is.

And put a big ol' cap on that.

You can do one and you can do the other, you shouldn't try to halfway both simultaneously.

25 is not that young for wingers. Reichel is 3.5 years younger, but people have written the book on him already it seems...

Necas would be here long term dont know what you are saying-

Rebuild is not just hope. Its using assets to get talent.

The cap is for any quality player. The cap is spent whether you trade for them or pay an old player in UFA like your idea.

Dont know what you are saying halfway. Necas is 25 years old. If you are trying to compete in 3 years he would be 28. Thats prime for competing.

Its fairly young. He would be signed through his full prime. When we are trying to compete for a cup he will be Trocheck Panarin Zebanejad Kreider Barkov Verheaege Reinhart Benn Seguin Marchment Draisaitl Hyman Kane Miller Lindholm Joshua Garland age.

Martin Havlat and Patrick Sharp were both 25 year old wings who helped carry the load for Toews and Kane early on. Its needed. Using 2 young assets to get that when you have SO MANY in the system is fine with me.
