How can anyone have watched last season and the night in night out shit show of "defense" provided by Ghost and then think it's a good idea to pursue even worse options?

Mo and Ed can run a PP and not be trainwrecks outside of special teams. Specialists are for teams that don't have full all-around options available.

What I found from the free agency, if Yzerman is gonna moneyball leaving Gostisbehere, those options for all-offence cheap options would be Tyson Barrie and Tony DeAngelo. Their 2-year productions per Ice-time will match pretty well with Ghost.

Then we would have too many defencemen, and maybe another trade comes an option, who knows.

2-year points/60:

Gostisbehere 1.87
Barrie 1.73
DeAngelo 1.60
Hronek 1.59
Seider 1.35

Some known names for comparison.
Why bother replacing Ghost?

Stand pat or add a top 4 RD with defensive capabilities if SY can trade Holl and one of Maatta/Walman.

It's the moneyball thing,

You get those guys for 1-2M. Over half cheaper than Ghost was (4.1M) and he is gonna get 5M+.

You should not be surpriced if this kind of things will happen.

They are short-term placeholders, before Pellikka is ready for NHL.

The position of "terrible defensively and not scoring enough to make up for it and subsequently sheltered" defenseman is not one that should be maintained. Let alone one you should specifically sign trash defensemen for to be placeholders of.

it does not seem like you understand what moneyball is. Moneyball was about finding market inefficiencies by using proper understanding of statistics to deal with budget restrictions in evironment where you cannot keep your best players. By signing somebody like Barrie or DeAngelo, no weeknesses are addressed - your statistics are telling you that you have a better inhouse replacement for Ghost which allows to spend money to address actual weekness - defensive play. We can discuss if Chatfield or Myers or Kulikov or Ian Cole or maybe even Brendan Smith is a moneyball solution for this problem. And this is without even addressing elephant in the room that Yzerman already got rid of DeAngelo as quickly as he could do.

Sorry, I should have been clearer, let Ghost walk and not replace him with an outsider unless another existing D (or two) is shipped out, then look for a top 4 RD that can move down in a few years.

Both Joey and Burger are arbitration eligible, Joey is getting more than $825k. Burger doesn't have as much leverage. (Confirmed both on CapFriendly)

Also, I thought the team owns their rights until they hit 27. Joey is 24, Burger's 24th birthday is in July.

As for Burger, it would make no sense for him to sign a cheap multi-year contract after getting buried in GR the whole season. He'll sign to one year to prove himself. I think he'll take Sprong's role, and Stevie let's Sprong walk. Healthy scratched for the 8th season in a row.
You're right I didn't realize Veleno was Arbitration eligible. He'll for sure get 1.5-2.5 million.

Bold is correct, sometimes it's sooner if they have 7 accrued seasons before they're 27.

There is no planet in which I'm okay with Tony DeAngelo on this team.

Way I see it, guy has had his three strikes. If someone else wants to pay him and hope he stays a good boy... they're more than welcome to do so. He's a recalcitrant jackass that Tampa couldn't wait to be rid of, Phoenix couldn't wait to be rid of, and that started a fight with his own goalie in New York.

Matt Roy and Brett Pesce are the only good options to use bigger money at 6M range.

But if they go elsewhere, then Yzerman will turn his moneyball-switch on, and we will see CHEAP surprise signings no one could predict before.

All Sprong, Ghost, Fischer, Reimer, Compher were kind of like this, and they overperforemed their salaries/expectations. Only Holl did underperform. Last off-season was pretty good.

Also getting Kane was all doom and gloom, OMG HIS HIPS ARE DONE, but then it went pretty well and he overperformed the expectations.

Yzerman nailed 6/7, and I'm pretty confident in him.

I'm surprised TDA is still alive, to be honest. I figured Torts would have killed him in Philadelphia.

changed mind a bit, pass on sprong unless he will take bargain for 1 yr

edit: skip on reimer too
He doesn’t think he will resign with the team, I think the red wings don’t have him on their roster next season. Was a good power play weapon and scored some decent 5on5 goals for the team, but always a liability on the defensive side of the ice.

I also “have a feeling” that he didn’t quite see eye to eye with Uncle fester

These Matt Roy statistics look really interesting.

He is very big positive in both GAR and xGAR.

2nd pair guy, but putting best/second best numbers on the table. Used against opposite 2nd lines, not really ahyhow sheltered, That Englund-Clarke 3rd pair at last season for Kings.

And it's not any kind of one year fluke, this has been continuing for last 3 seasons. Best defenceman in Kings' GAR for 3 seasons in-a-row.

For some reason I feel one big signing this offseason and I think its Guentzel - Kane will go elsewhere, hoping Veleno is also a roster casulty. Raymond and Seider will be 8 year signings, Berggren will get a deal and he and Edvinnson will be solid additions. Danielson or Kasper come up mid-year

Sign me up for Roy. If we keep Kane and bring in Roy I'm super happy.

All the Rangers fans are trying to convince everyone that the Rangers are going offload Trouba on to us.(Personally, do not want, unless the Rangers are taking a combo like Holl and Copp back).

We seem to get linked to everyone from Michigan these days.

Trouba would start landing suspensions the second he threw a bow out while playing for us.

Id take him honestly him and seider would have like 400 hits and 400 blocks between them. You are right tho, Copp would need to go the other way.

That's great to hear. Hope he will move with 50% retention.

I want us to be a dirty pain-in-the-ass team.

We already have like 5 third pairing defensemen, hard pass, i'd rather have Copp

Obviously Ray and Seider are getting deals.
Veleno is back on a cheap deal I assume as well.
We will probably have Berggren and Ed on the roster next year.
We still need to sign some wingers, particularly for the second line. I wouldn't mind Kane or Sprong back if the price is right.

How I did count the cap, there's 5.0-5.3M left for a 2nd line winger.

Other deals are on the books already or easy to predict.

5.3M for Kane or somebody else.

Going after Stamkos with 7.5M, you need to get creative with cap. More 1year 35+ deals, and push the bonuses for next year.
