I don't follow the KHL but everything I have read says a lot of us are making a mistake assuming he won't take a spot in the blueline.

The ice time he gets as a 20-21 year old in the KHL is not common.

I wouldn't count him out - they are very high on him internally and over in Russia.

Never hurts to have viable options coming in on the cheap if you start to have to make salary cap decisions.

We'll see how he keeps developing and how he adapts once he comes over. If he can eventually become a Brandon Montour or anywhere close to Adam Fox, it would be a homerun.

This was a clever pick by Hugues where nobody is in a hurry, we don't have to spend a contract slot until we know he's comming and has reached his potential, he has time to develop at a high level of competition and when he comes he'll be NHL ready. For a 4th pick... a really nice pick.

Well, coaches hype their players up, in the media because they want their confidence to go up, and also because if their players go onto good opportunities after being with their team, the team looks like a good organization for young players to join.

Hard for me to get excited about his offense, or his potential as a shutdown d, due to his size. Kind of like Jordan Harris.

His coach is Igor Larionov and Bogdan already is a captain in the KHL at his age so I really doubt it’s just standard coach praise.

Doesn’t mean it will work out in the NHL but even if you’re not excited he’s a good prospect to have in our system and it’s perfectly fine if people forget about him while he develops.

Definitely a good prospect to have. Some players make a role for themselves, like Darcy Tucker did after Alain Vigneault doubted him.

He's strangely cultured for a 21 year old hockey player, there's something different about him and his mental game, and I'm confident that's why Larionov has faith in him. I have a good feeling about him, and I think he could really fit the culture HuGo are trying to build.

True. But then again, in Russia they generally have a stronger "reading culture" than in the US or Canada so that may have something to do with it.

Curious if this is factually true or is it just something that Jordan Peterson spews out of his sick mind.

I have no reason to doubt or support this claim so I take no issue with you asserting this, I will need to look for some corroborating facts.

Soooo......this is the first site that I clicked on that indicates that Canada and the U.S. as a combined reading force dominate the entire world but I don't see Russia even listed and that seems odd.

This site seems to be a better resource and still has North America reading far more than Russia

But then.....there is this site that has Russia reading more than the U.S. or Canada......

All that can really be concluded from the sample that I have looked at is that the claim that Russia has a stronger "reading culture" than the US or Canada is strongly contested and maybe even tilting towards being unlikely to be true

Why are you not excited for his offence?

13th in the KHL in D scoring
6th for U27
2nd for U23
1st for U22

5th in overall scoring on his team
Lead D scoring by 13 points

Well he'll turn 22 in the first months of the upcoming season. How many points should a dman with offensive potential in the NHL be putting up as a 22 year old in the KHL?

Hard to say because the recent Russian offensive D all went by the CHL instead, but Orlov had 13 points in his D+2 in the KHL.

Gavrikov who had a 30 points NHL season had 20 points at 23 years old. At 21, he had 7 points.

Romanov had 7 points at 20 years old.

Offensively, Konyushkov is the best young D in the KHL apart from the highly regarded Nikishin (whose point production only exploded when he joined SKA, before that it was under BK).

Is he Hutson level? No.

Higher floor, lower ceiling than Mailloux. Better defensively.

If Reinbacher and Mailloux develop well, having a guy like Konyushkov moving the puck on your third pair is a nice luxury to have.

If Mailloux disappoints, Konyushkov can potentially handle PP2 and 2nd pair. Or just 2nd pair if Mailloux becomes PP specialist.
