I think the Butterfly is the biggest reason for this. The Goaltending from early Gretzky highlights is so bad.

I hate "the 80s" being used to denigrate Gretzky's numbers, it was a much higher scoring environment yet NO ONE came close to his totals over that time frame

The Great One is The Great One for a reason. If it was so easy to score, why didn't others replicate Gretzky's numbers then?
