Blue Jays Discussion: 2024-25 Off-season: The free agent watch begins (and sometimes old baseball radio broadcasts)

This isn't the place for calm and rational thought. The sky is falling damn it!
I am a calm rational person, losing out on a 23 year old that we can get pre-arb production for ruins the chance to shortcut the mess we are left with. Now its back to trying to bulk up a team without a farm system to trade from and every free agents 2nd choice.

Jays have deals out for everybody for a month now. Clearly nobody is interested. They only hoffman done because they were the only ones interested in taking him on with the shoulder issues. Only way now to get anything done if via trade or they wait until the player is desperate and other teams move on

The fitting end to the last two offseasons would be for the Jays to find out that they are also their fans 2nd choice (stop watching)

It’s like the front office is going out of its way to outdo itself for bad decisions. I’m done with baseball for a while. I’ll be checking in but zero interest

I sure hope the stadium is full of boos all season.

I need to know how the communication was so poor between Sasaki and the Jays that it lead to the Jays literally taking on 14 million for a minor leaguer to get the international pool money only for Sasaki to snub them. Did Sasaki play them or are the Jays front office this incompetent!?

Getting IFA pool money, regardless of Sasaki, is a good thing in my view. Rebuilding through the draft in the MLB is a fools errand and so many of the best players in the league come through Latin America. If we can sign a top-tier Dominican player, it would be such a boon down the line (like Vlad Jr is today, please sign him).

But the optics are horrendous. Like pie in the face optics of getting rejected once again. Not a good look for the org to be coming in second place perpetually, especially when you give off an aura of desperation. It's kind of juvenile and schoolyard-ish but reality at the same time.

Is 2 million in IFA money worth taking on Straw? And is there any decent international players left to sign?

I don't know if these players have promise deals already, but they're currently listed as unsigned out of MLB.com's top IFAs.

11. Manny Cedeno, SS, D.R.
12. Ayden Johnson, SS, Bah
21. Jhoan De La Cruz, SS, D.R.
26. Carlos Taveras, OF, D.R.
35. Deivid Coronil, SS, Ven.
39. Carlos Alvarez, LHP, D.R.

So there are some guys left, at least. Or they can keep the powder dry for next year I’m assuming.

It sucks that we’re allocating money to futures though. But maybe, after missing on Sasaki, rebuilding isn’t the worst idea.

I’m still not inclined to jump off the cliff.
Straw trade isn’t great, but as a bench piece you get premium D and good wheels. What would you pay for that in FA? A mil or two? The rest of the aav is buying the right to spend more on IFA’s who’ll augment the system possibly.
Made a good run at a good player.
Most fans wanted an improved bullpen, a couple bats and resolution on Vlad.
First objective achieved, but could tweak still. Second, the realistic bats are still in play, so tbd. And there’s ongoing discussions with Vlad, so tbd.
You really should move to Egypt my friend. Because no offense, but you're living in denial.

This might be the most accurate photo of the 21st century. LMFAO

It might be a little bit of both

This is going to sound a bit tinfoil hatty, but i'll tell you what i think;

Shatkins believed they had a shot at Sasaki, then they realized they need a bit more bonus money. (fine)

They go to Shapiro's old stomping grounds in Cleveland, knowing that a) they're friendly and b) The Guardians front office would sell their own families if it meant saving money on their budget.

Cleveland has a garbage contract to get rid of in Myles Straw, so they propose the Jays taking this on in exchange for some bonus money. Toronto does it. But here's where my thought comes in;

Myles Straw is the exact f***ing type of player Ross Atkins salivates over. High impact defensive outfielder with zero offense to speak of. In his stupid ass head, this process is now a win. He either gets Sasaki and if he doesn't the guy he got as a contract dump in his mind has value to contribute to a winning baseball team.

That's why he pulled the trigger without the confirmation and this is why he should be deported out of Canada so he can go ruin some other shithole org.

I don't even want to do the math on how much negative surplus value we took on from the Guardians this off-season. Atkins definitely needs to be deported.
