Mets using Vlad trade discussions as leverage to get a cheaper deal on Alonso.

Jays potentially using Alonso rumors to help with the Vlad extension.

Jays using the Vlad extension to get Sasaki interested in signing.

Jays using the Vlad and Saaski talks to get Bregman and Alonso interested in coming to Toronto.

Jays putting the Bregman rumor out to get Alonso motivated to take their deal and vice versa.

A bluff within a bluff.

The Vlad/Alonso/Bregman rumors reminds me of the Ray and Gausman negotiations. We offer contracts to 3 players, the first 2 players to accept will get their money which may help land Sasaki.

I think the Mets missed Toronto off and "interest" became a formal offer to Alonso.

Because it's under a paywall, here's a rundown.

The Blue Jays have not spoken to Guerrero’s camp about an extension since before Christmas, according to a source briefed on the conversations. However, those talks are expected to accelerate before Guerrero’s self-imposed deadline of Feb. 17, the day before the Jays hold their first full workout for pitchers and position players.

Alonso:

*As The Athletic reported Thursday, the Jays are in discussions with free-agent first baseman Pete Alonso. The addition of Alonso would not signal a willingness to trade Guerrero, according to a source briefed on the discussions. The Jays are trying to win, and their more likely plan would be to install Alonso at first and move Guerrero to third, where he appeared in 12 games last season. Both also could serve as designated hitters.

The signing of Alonso also could protect the Jays against the potential loss of Guerrero, provided the deal does not include an opt-out after one year. Alonso’s camp proposed to the Mets exclusively a three-year deal with a high average annual value and opt-outs. The Mets countered with a straight three-year offer that Alonso rejected, league sources said.

On possibility of a Vlad trade:

Finally, while a trade of Guerrero, with or without Alonso, is not out of the question, Toronto’s response to teams that have merely checked in on Guerrero’s availability in a deal reflects their strong desire to keep him.

To even think about trading Guerrero, a package would have to include major leaguers and top prospects and exceed the value the San Diego Padres received from the New York Yankees for Soto, league sources said.

Nym's offer to Alonso was 3 years, 68-70M. That's not exactly a great take it or leave it offer.
That’s the kind of offer where you’d feel like player has to give up both term and aav
With word that the Jays have made offers on all the three qualified big bat free agents, I wonder where their offers actually sit.
Media keeps saying they ‘stick to their valuations’….would love to start hearing what those offers are looking like.

I feel like they’ll get one of the big 3 remaining, there’s only so many teams still willing to spend that kind of $.

What I’m wondering is if they’d pony up for two of them. I find it hard to believe this front office would pull the trigger, but man if we did we could potentially be a legit contender again.

Yeah, I agree….two seems like a stretch, one seems likely.
But one of the three, plus say Profar….that sounds like the top end possibility.
Which would be a nice lil offence.
I kinda liked Winker for the mix, but he signed a sweet cheap one year deal.

Unless Sasaki chooses TO….then I could see a different approach, with maybe a an uptick in aggressiveness.

I’d be thrilled with one plus Profar, but I think one plus Verdugo or Moncada is far more likely.

Moncada would be an interesting secondary addition to the infield mix. Verdugo offers nothing that they can't get from half a dozen young internal options.
I agree, but we’ve apparently been linked to Verdugo. The only argument for him is that last year is likely his floor, and that is likely higher than the internal OF options floor. And if he bounces back he can be a decent option.

I think between Loperfido, Clase, or Roden you’re likely to get as much protection without adding to payroll.

Agreed. Moncada could see a path to plenty of AB’s at 3rd with Clement - who they seem to love. That pair should provide roughly average offense.
There’s a few things to figure out with the kids they added here too.
I assume they really like Wagner, at least I hope they do. Is he gonna be part of the solution at 3B? I look at him as one of the best options to bat leadoff.
Barger could be the LH side of the 3B solution too.
I kinda expect Barger to be in AAA, OMart there, and probably both Clase and Loperido to start the year to build some momentum.

Yeah it better pay off especially since you have one of the worst prospect pools, to wait and not sign anyone just to miss out on sasaki will hurt them.
It’s only gonna be a couple days….I’m sure they’ll do okay if they don’t get Roki.
Hell, he might not even demand 100% of the pool for all we know.

I'd 100% prefer to let the kids play over him

Jays should absolutely be exploring trading Vladdy, if they arent willing to give him what he wants. Mind you I'm not in the camp that they should be giving a 1B $450M deal.

Trade him or he'll walk for free. Keeping him unsigned until free agency will absolutely leave them with their pants down.

I have no interest in seeing them trade the best young player this organization has developed in almost 30 years for a bunch of prospects who won’t be nearly as good and won’t have an impact for 3-5 years.
I especially have zero interest in seeing Shatkins do it as they have shown no ability to identify and develop young talent.

450M might seem like a lot now but that is just going to be the cost of doing business going forward. Salaries are going to go up now. In back to back offseasons guys have signed for over 700M. When the top tier of guys get paid like that it brings up the cost of the guys in the next tier.
If Shatkins were smart they would have locked Vlad up a couple of years ago but they didn’t and now it’s going to cost them.
