These two teams would overpay for him for sure as long as Atkins and company know what there doing
I mean we can always add a free 1st basemen with power every free agency it's not that hard to find. Pay alonso what he wants trade vlad and buchette by doing so you restock the farm and your able to compete for a playoffs spot this year. But it also depends on sasaki and if they get him or not. Bring in all 3 alonso bregman and Santander if you get sasaki.
Fans won't be happy about trading them both but you will have a top rotation top 5 bullpen
You also move Rodriguez to the pen.

Both teams, and there’d be others that swing into the mix, have top half farm systems, especially the Cubbies who look top 5ish.
There’s always been something off about the resign Vlad narrative. Says he wants to stay, but hasn’t pushed for a deal either. I’m not sure where the team actually stands, but seems they’ve been fine offering way more than any 1B has ever got….and that’s not close? Meanwhile, he’s on again off again with greatness.
This could be pretty dynamic.

It's such a no brainer to re-sign Vladdy. Come on. Makes your franchise more attractive to free agents, he would help you recruit dudes. Fans will be a lot happier. Fans will keep buying tickets. I mean, there are so many benefits. So frustrating.

At this point I wouldn't trust Atkins to sign his own name, let alone get Vladdy to sign his.

I love the dichotomy of hopeful optimism regarding Roki signing here, and the impending volcano of rage when Vladdy either walks or gets traded.
Let's be honest... there will be a volcano of rage when Sasaki signs with the Dodgers, too.

I mean......yes but not really, y'know?

No one expects the Jays to sign Sasaki, a star pitcher with no real link to Toronto.

Vladdy's the brightest star on the team, and losing him due to managerial incompetence is gonna sting a lot more than coming in 2nd (or 3rd) place on a free agent yet again.

There are definitely packages that they could put together that would be hard to say no to, but...

Do we expect to receive one?

I would want Vientos and 2-3 of their top prospects to even think about it.

Yeah, I don't disagree that it'll be a different level. If Vladdy doesn't sign an extension, rage would be completely justified.

If Sasaki goes elsewhere, I think the majority of people will be pretty reasonable about it... disappointed, but understanding that it's up to Sasaki where he chooses to go and there's not much else management could do. But the handful of people who are furious about it will be funny.

If the alternative if Vladdy walking for nothing after another sunk season, then working out a trade for futures does seem preferable.

If Toronto could move Vladdy and Bo for what they are actually worth, they could set up a competitive run AND overhaul the system. The issues are 1) Is that a thing? and 2) Do we trust management to target the right guys and the development staff to develop them?

1) Yes

2) No

It's maddening.
