Nah it ain't early. We've seen this before.LOL
Damn some of you guys really can’t handle the MLB offseason.
What has happened so far that we reasonably could have and should have been in on?
Soto was never going to sign here.
Because we have drafted and developed terribly we didn’t have the prospect capital to match the Redsox offer for Crochet. Bellinger’s contract is radioactive waste we should have wanted nothing to do with.
Fried to the Yankees was a good signing but other than that no a lot has gone on. Baseball free agency isn’t like hockey where everything good happens the first 2 days. It takes months to play out.
There are tons of reasons to criticize this front office. I’m deeply in the fire Shatkins group. But it’s too early to freak out about this off season.
Yeah man. Shatkins sucks and don’t fill me with any confidence.Nah it ain't early. We've seen this before.
Rossy boi about to pull of some fringe signings that are decent enough from a standalone perspective but don't do shit like move the needle. Moncada and Margot incoming smh.
Yeah man. Shatkins sucks and don’t fill me with any confidence.
But out of the top 5 hitters and top 5 starting pitchers that are FAs how many have signed?
1 hitter in Soto and 2 pitchers in Fried and Kikuchi?
Most guys are still out there.
They need to field a team, but they probably should be shedding salary - Bassitt, Springer for sure, Gausman and Berrios could get a decent return.I wish we had info on what salary threshold they will spend to.
2025 CBT thresholds:
- First threshold: Approximately $241 million
- Second threshold: Approximately $261 million
- Third threshold: Approximately $281 million
FanGraphs has our estimated payroll at $206 million.
If these numbers are accurate and they spend to the first threshold, they could have somewhere around $30 million to spend. If they go to the next threshold, which would have been needed for Soto, it could be as high as $50+ million.
I think they only move Gausman or Berrios if they move into a rebuild mode. I think they are going to add not subtract unless the off-season is a failure, then maybe they pivot to a rebuild… but seems a bit unlikely we’re at that stage. Bassist could be a possibility depending on what else they do but also seems unlikely imo. They need to field a team, but they probably should be shedding salary - Bassitt, Springer for sure, Gausman and Berrios could get a decent return.
A few things here:I wish we had info on what salary threshold they will spend to.

A few things here:
1) When looking at the Jays estimated payroll in relation to the CBT (luxury tax) thresholds, you actually have to look at FanGraphs estimated luxury tax payroll (scroll down a bit from their estimated payroll). Their estimated luxury tax payroll for the Jays is currently $228 million ($13 million below the first threshold).
2) The last 2 seasons in a row, the Jays have had an opening day CBT payroll of roughly $250 million according to Cots (Toronto Blue Jays | Cot's Baseball Contracts). Their payroll estimates also differ from FanGraphs, who don't have a perfect record when it comes to their payroll calculations. Cots currently has the Jays $23 million under the first CBT threshold.
But if the Jays opening day CBT payroll ends up at roughly $250 million for the 3rd consecutive season, they would actually still have $22 million to spend according to FanGraphs, and $32 million according to Cots.
3) There have also been rumours of certain top free agents from this class triggering a budget increase, to right around the 2nd threshold of $261 million if the Jays are able to sign one (this is different from the Soto/Ohtani unique cases which would have rocketed the budget even higher).
Free agents that have been mentioned in this context and are still unsigned (according to the Sportsnet reporters so you can take this 3rd point with a massive grain of salt), are Burnes/Bregman/Santander/Teoscar.
